Early postoperative complications after transverse colostomy closure,a retrospective study

BACKGROUND Ostomy is a common surgery usually performed to protect patients from clinical symptoms caused by distal anastomotic leakage after colorectal cancer(CRC)surgery and perforation or to relieve intestinal obstruction.AIM To analyze the complications after transverse colostomy closure.METHODS Patients who underwent transverse colostomy closure from Jan 2015 to Jan 2022 were retrospectively enrolled in a single clinical center.The differences between the complication group and the no complication group were compared.Logistic regression analyses were conducted to find independent factors for overall complications or incision infection.RESULTS A total of 102 patients who underwent transverse colostomy closure were enrolled in the current study.Seventy(68.6%)patients underwent transverse colostomy because of CRC related causes.Postoperative complications occurred in 30(29.4%)patients and the most frequent complication occurring after transverse colostomy closure was incision infection(46.7%).The complication group had longer hospital stays(P<0.01).However,no potential risk factors were identified for overall complications and incision infection.CONCLUSION The most frequent complication occurring after transverse colostomy closure surgery in our center was incision infection.The operation time,interval from transverse colostomy to reversal,and method of anastomosis might have no impact on the postoperative complications.Surgeons should pay more attention to aseptic techniques.

An efficient recycling strategy to eliminate the residual“impurities”while heal the damaged structure of spent graphite anodes

The recycling of graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)is overlooked due to its relatively low added value and the lack of efficient recovering methods.To reuse the spent graphite anodes,we need to eliminate their useless components(mainly the degraded solid electrolyte interphase,SEI)and reconstruct their damaged structure.Herein,a facile and efficient strategy is proposed to recycle the spent graphite on the basis of the careful investigation of the composition of the cycled graphite anodes and the rational design of the regeneration processes.The regenerated graphite,which is revitalized by calcination treatment and acid leaching,delivers superb rate performance and a high specific capacity of 370 mAh g^(-1)(~99% of its theoretical capacity)after 100 cycles at 0.1 C,superior to the commercial graphite anodes.The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to unchoked Li^(+) transport channels and enhanced charge transfer reaction due to the effective destruction of the degraded SEI and the full recovery of the damaged structure of the spent graphite.This work clarifies that the electrochemical performance of the regenerated graphite could be deteriorated by even a trace amount of the residual“impurity”and provides a facile method for the efficient regeneration of graphite anodes.

Stark splitting of intense red emission for Er^(3+)in O_(h) symmetry sites realizing optical temperature sensing in biological applications

Optical temperature sensing based on the fluorescence intensity ratio(FIR)of red emission for lanthanide ions holds significant relevance in non-contact temperature measurement for biological application.In this study,the perovskite-structured KZnF_(3)is utilized as a host material for Er^(3+)to achieve a high-purity upconversion(UC)red emission.The observed Stark splitting of the red emission peak provides evidence of the energy level splitting of Er^(3+).Group theory is employed to decompose the spectral branching of Er^(3+)under the point group symmetry of KZnF_(3),allowing for the derivation of Stark splitting energy levels induced by the crystal field effect.The optical temperature-sensing behavior of the red UC luminescence was investigated,specifically examining the FIR of the splitting sub-peaks,which exhibited an exponential relationship with temperature.The KZnF_(3):Yb^(3+),Er^(3+)demonstrated a relative sensitivity(S_(r))of 0.00182%·K^(-1)at 298 K,highlighting its excellent response to temperature.Ex vivo bio-thermometry experiments conducted on chicken breast validated the material's ability to penetrate biological tissues and showed its significant sensitivity of the FIR to temperature.These results establish KZnF_(3):Yb^(3+),Er^(3+)as a promising material for optical thermometry in various biological applications.

Influence of cerium and yttrium addition on strength and electrical conductivity of pure aluminum alloys

To develop pure aluminum alloys with high conductivity and strength, Al-0.2Ce and Al-0.2Ce-0.1Y alloys were prepared by rolling and annealing processes in this study. The effects of trace rare earth elements on the strength and electrical conductivity of the pure aluminum alloys were investigated. It is revealed that the addition of Ce and Y to pure aluminum can effectively enhance the strength and electrical conductivity of the alloys. In Al-0.2Ce, the addition of Ce can effectively refine the grain size of a-Al, with an average grain size of 90.68 μm in the as-cast state. The grain size of the alloy is further reduced to 87.55 μm by the simultaneous addition of Y. The synergistic addition of Ce and Y changes the properties of the alloy. The addition of Ce and Y also produces the Al_(11)Ce_(3) and Al_(3)Y second phases, which have coherent relationship with a-Al. The two-dimensional mismatch degree was calculated to be only 4.43%and 0.85%, respectively, which can provide a certain amount of nucleation substrate for a-Al in the incubation stage. The interfacial match between the L1_(2)structure of Al_(3)Y and a-Al was calculated using first-principles simulations. The results indicate that Al_(3)Y has a strong bonding effect with a-Al. Nanoscale second phases at grain boundaries can be effective in reducing resistivity due to dislocation motion.Nanoscale second phases with better matching interfaces to the substrate have no positive effect on the scattering motion of electrons.

Effect of electrical parameters and slag system on macrostructure of electroslag ingot

To investigate the influence of electric parameters and slag system on the solidification quality of electroslag ingot during electroslag remelting,different power supply modes,current strengths and remelting slag systems were used to conduct electroslag remelting experiments on 304L austenitic stainless steel,and the macrostructure of electroslag ingots was analyzed.The results indicate that the depth of the metal pool decreases with the reduction of remelting frequency in the low frequency power supply mode.The effects of different power supply modes,such as low-frequency,direct current straight polarity(DCSP),and direct current reverse polarity(DCRP),on reducing the depth of the metal pool increase in that order.By reducing the remelting current strength in the same power supply mode,the depth of metal pool is reduced.When compared to the binary slag system of 70%CaF2+30%Al2O3,the ternary slag system of 60%CaF2+20%Al2O3+20%CaO is more effective in reducing the depth of the metal pool during remelting.Utilizing the 60%CaF2+20%Al2O3+20%CaO ternary slag system results in a shallower and flatter metal pool,with columnar crystal growth occurring closer to the axial crystal.This effect is observed for both low frequency and direct current(DC)power supply modes.

As a promising cancer treatment method,cold atmospheric plasma has received widespread attention in recent years.However,previous research has focused more on how to realize and expand the anti-cancer scope of plasma jet.There are also studies on the killing of small-scale cancer cells,but the effects of plasma jet on normal cells and normal cell clusters have been ignored.Therefore,we proposed a 50μm sized micro-plasma jet device,and used the device to treat melanoma cells(A-375)and human glial cells(HA1800)to evaluate their anti-cancer effects and effects on normal cells.The experimental results show that this kind of micro-plasma jet device can effectively inactivate cancer cells in a short period of time,while having little effect on normal cells.This work provides a certain experimental basis for the application ofﬁne plasma jet to clinically inactivate cancer cells.

Highly efficient tunable photodetector with a bipolar response in van der Waals heterojunctions

The heterojunction integration of two-dimensional(2D)materials via van der Waals(vdW)forces,unencumbered by lattice and processing constraints,constitutes an efficacious approach to enhance the overall optoelectronic performance of photodetectors,due to an assortment of distinctive light-matter interactions.Nonetheless,vdW heterojunction photodetectors based on transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)face an inevitable trade-off between low dark currents and high responsivity,curtailing the application potential of myriad novel optoelectronic components in sensing,spectral,and communication systems.In this study,we present the successful actualization of a highly sensitive,self-powered,and gate-tunable bipolar response photodetector.The mechanisms underlying photocurrent generation were scrutinized via bias-,power-,and position-dependent mapping photoresponse measurements,identifying the photovoltaic effect,which is attributable to the Schottky junction’s built-in electric field,as the predominant mechanism.The prototype Au-WS2-graphene photodetector exhibits a remarkable light on/off ratio of 1.2×10^(6),a specific detectivity of 6.12×10^(11)cm H^(z1/2)W^(-1)with 20μs response time at 638 nm.The wide gate-tunable responsivity provides an adjustability scope,ranging from 0.9 to 3.1 A W^(-1).Notably,the device demonstrates an exceptional linear photocurrent response,with a linear dynamic range(LDR)value approximating 130 dB,which significantly surpasses that of other photodetectors based on TMDs.

High-resolution neutronics model for ^(238)Pu production in high-flux reactors

We proposed and compared three methods(filter burnup,single energy burnup,and burnup extremum analysis)to build a high-resolution neutronics model for 238Pu production in high-flux reactors.The filter burnup and single energy burnup methods have no theoretical approximation and can achieve a spectrum resolution of up to~1 eV,thereby constructing the importance curve and yield curve of the full energy range.The burnup extreme analysis method combines the importance and yield curves to consider the influence of irradiation time on production efficiency,thereby constructing extreme curves.The three curves,which quantify the transmutation rate of the nuclei in each energy region,are of physical significance because they have similar distributions.A high-resolution neutronics model for ^(238)Pu production was established based on these three curves,and its universality and feasibility were proven.The neutronics model can guide the neutron spectrum optimization and improve the yield of ^(238)Pu by up to 18.81%.The neutronics model revealed the law of nuclei transmutation in all energy regions with high spectrum resolution,thus providing theoretical support for high-flux reactor design and irradiation production of ^(238)Pu.

Al-doped ZnO/WO_(3) heterostructure films prepared by magnetron sputtering for isopropanol sensors

Metal oxide semiconductors(MOSs) are ideal sensing materials for detecting volatile organic compounds due to their low cost, diversity, high stability, and ease of production. However, it remains a grand challenge to develop the MOSs-based gas sensors for sensing isopropanol with desired performance via a simple, effective,and controllable method. Herein, we reported the preparation of the Al-doped Zn O(AZO)/WO_(3) heterostructure films by directly depositing the AZO coating onto the WO_(3) coating using a strategy of magnetron sputtering. The AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films were constructed by numbers of irregular nanoparticles that were interconnected with each other. The AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films-based gas sensors exhibited excellent isopropanolsensing performance with high response, promising selectivity, low detection limit, fast response rate, wide detection range, and ideal reproducibility. The promising isopropanol-sensing performance of the AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films arises mainly from their high uniformity, unique microstructures with high surface roughness,and the construction of the heterostructure between the AZO and WO_(3) coatings. This work provides a versatile approach to prepare the MOSs-based heterostructure films for assembling the gas sensors.

Construction of a nomogram model to predict technical difficulty in performing laparoscopic sphincter-preserving radical resection for rectal cancer

BACKGROUND Colorectal surgeons are well aware that performing surgery for rectal cancer becomes more challenging in obese patients with narrow and deep pelvic cavities.Therefore,it is essential for colorectal surgeons to have a comprehensive understanding of pelvic structure prior to surgery and anticipate potential surgical difficulties.AIM To evaluate predictive parameters for technical challenges encountered during laparoscopic radical sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.METHODS We retrospectively gathered data from 162 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic radical sphincterpreserving surgery for rectal cancer.Three-dimensional reconstruction of pelvic bone and soft tissue parameters was conducted using computed tomography(CT)scans.Operative difficulty was categorized as either high or low,and multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to identify predictors of operative difficulty,ultimately creating a nomogram.RESULTS Out of 162 patients,21(13.0%)were classified in the high surgical difficulty group,while 141(87.0%)were in the low surgical difficulty group.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the surgical approach using laparoscopic intersphincteric dissection,intraoperative preventive ostomy,and the sacrococcygeal distance were independent risk factors for highly difficult laparoscopic radical sphincter-sparing surgery for rectal cancer(P<0.05).Conversely,the anterior-posterior diameter of pelvic inlet/sacrococcygeal distance was identified as a protective factor(P<0.05).A nomogram was subsequently constructed,demonstrating good predictive accuracy(C-index=0.834).CONCLUSION The surgical approach,intraoperative preventive ostomy,the sacrococcygeal distance,and the anterior-posterior diameter of pelvic inlet/sacrococcygeal distance could help to predict the difficulty of laparoscopic radical sphincter-preserving surgery.
