Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration in intrathoracic lymphadenopathy with extrathoracic malignancy

Recent advances in supervised salient object detection modeling has resulted in significant performance improvements on benchmark datasets. However, most of the existing salient object detection models assume that at least one salient object exists in the input image. Such an assumption often leads to less appealing saliency maps on the background images with no salient object at all. Therefore, handling those cases can reduce the false positive rate of a model. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning approach for jointly addressing the salient object detection and existence prediction problems. Given a set of background-only images and images with salient objects, as well as their salient object annotations, we adopt the structural SVM framework and formulate the two problems jointly in a single integrated objective function: saliency labels of superpixels are involved in a classification term conditioned on the salient object existence variable, which in turn depends on both global image and regional saliency features and saliency labels assignments. The loss function also considers both image-level and regionlevel mis-classifications. Extensive evaluation on benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed joint approach compared to the baseline and state-of-the-art models.

An empirical model to form and evolve galaxies in dark matter halos

Based on the star formation histories of galaxies in halos with different masses, we develop an empirical model to grow galaxies in dark matter halos. This model has very few ingredients, any of which can be associated with observational data and thus be efficiently assessed. By applying this model to a very high resolution cosmological N-body simulation, we predict a number of galaxy properties that are a very good match to relevant observational data. Namely, for both centrals and satellites, the galaxy stellar mass functions up to redshift z=4 and the conditional stellar mass functions in the local universe are in good agreement with observations. In addition, the two point correlation function is well predicted in the different stellar mass ranges explored by our model. Furthermore, after applying stellar population synthesis models to our stellar composition as a function of redshift, we find that the luminosity functions in the 0.1 u,0.19, 0.1r, 0.1i and 0.1z bands agree quite well with the SDSS observational results down to an absolute magnitude at about -17.0. The SDSS conditional luminosity function itself is predicted well. Finally, the cold gas is derived from the star formation rate to predict the HI gas mass within each mock galaxy. We find a remarkably good match to observed HI-to-stellar mass ratios. These features ensure that such galaxy/gas catalogs can be used to generate reliable mock redshift surveys.

To the Editor: A 68-year-old man presented with proteinuria of 1-year duration. A giant 22 cm × 18 cm fixed mass was found upon abdominal examination. Laboratory testing revealed severe proteinuria (3.0g/24h) and severe hypoalbuminemia 29g/L (normal range: 40-55 g/L). The patient complained of passing foamy urine for a period of approximately 1 year and that the symptom seemed to worsen in the 20 days before hospital admission. Inflammatory and tumor markers were normal, but contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen [Figure 1] revealed a giant cystic solid neoplasm extending from the right upper quadrant of the retroperitoneum to the pelvis. A rich supply of blood vessels produced strong enhancement of the tumor surface. The presence of a tumor, proteinuria, and hypoalbuminemia prompted surgical removal of the abdominal mass.

An Image Denoising Method Based on Multiscale Wavelet Thresholding and Bilateral Filtering

A novel image denoising method is proposed based on multiscale wavelet thresholding （WT） and bilateral filtering （BF）. First, the image is decomposed into multiscale subbands by wavelet transform. Then, from the top scale to the bottom scale, we apply BF to the approximation subbands and WT to the detail subbands. The filtered subbands are reconstructed back to ap- proximation subbands of the lower scale. Finally, subbands are reconstructed in all the scales, and in this way the denoised image is formed. Different from conventional methods such as WT and BF, it can smooth the low-frequency noise efficiently. Experiment results on the image Lena and Rice show that the peak sig- nal-to-noise ratio （PSNR） is improved by at least 3 dB and 0.7 dB compared with using the WT and BF, respectively. In addition, the computational time of the proposed method is almost comparable with that of WT but much less than that of BF.
