BACKGROUND: The middle hepatic vein (MHV) is normally in form of a large trunk lying within the midplane of the liver. An anomaly in form of two separate trunks, each draining segment V/VIII and segment IV, has been described by Couinaud but not been well documented in the literature. METHOD: We report a right liver donor in whom the MHV was absent and not encountered during liver transection along the midplane of the liver. RESULTS: On computed tomography (CT) scan and intraoperative ultrasonography, there was a large segment VIII hepatic vein mistaken as the MHV on preoperative assessment and a large segment IV hepatic vein close to the ligamenturn venosum. CT volumetry based on either segment VIII or IV hepatic vein led to major error in liver volume calculation. Transection of the liver guided by segment VIII or IV hepatic vein would lead to sacrifice of liver parenchyma unnecessarily or presence of necrotic liver in the graft. CONCLUSION: Absent MHV is a rare anomaly. It is revealed by careful study of the CT scan.

Healthcare relief teams dispatched to rural areas often face difficulties due to limited initial and ongoing health information in the affected *** present study investigated patterns of healthcare service demand for a rural displaced population in a post-disaster *** weeks after the 2014 Ludian County earthquake,the Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction(IDMR) at Sichuan University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University organized a disaster nursing team to support the rural community in Longtoushan,at the epicenter of the earthquake.A cross-sectional,records-based study of 2484 records obtained from a temporary hospital in Longtoushan(for the period of 14 September-1 October 2014) was *** daily number of records by patients' sociodemographic characteristics and medical diagnoses were plotted on a time series graph to explore the temporal change during the study *** indicate that healthcare service demand from younger age groups was higher than that of the older adult *** major health problems were observed:respiratory disease,skin problems,and ear,eye,and throat(EET) *** of these very real health problems are chronic issues that require long-term *** are not health issues directly related to the disaster emergency *** disaster relief nursing teams were selected on the basis of their ability to cope primarily with traumatic disaster-related *** existing practice of teaming up disaster relief professions might not be *** better understand the healthcare needs of a displaced population,short- and long-term planning is *** will allow disaster response professionals to better organize and deploy healthcare personnel to manage the above-listed problems in a postdisaster situation.

BACKGROUND: In right liver living donor liver transplantation, hepatic venous anastomosis is performed using the recipient's right hepatic vein orifice. There may be situations that the portal vein is short or the right liver graft is small, leading to difficulty in portal vein, hepatic artery or duct-to-duct anastomosis. METHODS: The recipient's right hepatic vein orifice is closed partially for 2 cm at the cranial end or totally, and a new venotomy is made caudal to the right hepatic vein orifice. Hepatic vein anastomosis is performed with the new venotomy. RESULTS: The distance between the liver graft hilum and hepatoduodenal ligament is reduced. Portal vein, hepatic artery and biliary anastomosis could be performed without tension or conduit. CONCLUSION: Caudal shifting of hepatic vein anastomosis facilitates implantation of a right liver living donor graft.

Including the middle hepatic vein in the right lobe liver graft has the advantage of providing direct venous drainage of the right anterior segment. To allow unimpeded passage of blood flow, we previously designed venoplasty of the middle and right hepatic veins. We found that venoplasty is also feasible when the inferior right hepatic vein is near to the right hepatic vein, or when multiple segment 8 hepatic vein orifices are exposed adjacent to the middle hepatic vein at the graft transection surface. By joining the hepatic vein orifices into a single opening, the anastomosis into the inferior vena cava is much facilitated. The technique is simple, yet versatile , and able to cope with variation of the configurations of the hepatic vein.

Although genome-wide association studies （GWAS） have successfully identified thousands of genomic loci associated with hun- dreds of complex traits in the past decade, the debate about such problems as missing heritabiUty and weak interpretability has been appealing for effective computational methods to facilitate the advanced analysis of the vast volume of existing and antici- pated genetic data. Towards this goal, gene-tevel integrative GWAS analysis with the assumption that genes associated with a phenotype tend to be enriched in biological gene sets or gene networks has recently attracted much attention, due to such advan- tages as straightforward interpretation, tess multiple testing burdens, and robustness across studies. However, existing methods in this category usually exploit non-tissue-specific gene networks and thus lack the ability to utilize informative tissue-specific characteristics. To overcome this limitation, we proposed a Bayesian approach called SIGNET （Simultaneously Inference of GeNEs and Tissues） to integrate GWAS data and multiple tissue-specific gene networks for the simultaneous inference of phenotype- associated genes and relevant tissues. Through extensive simulation studies, we showed the effectiveness of our method in find- ing both associated genes and relevant tissues for a phenotype. In applications to real GWAS data of 14 complex phenotypes, we demonstrated the power of our method in both deciphering genetic basis and discovering biological insights of a phenotype. With this understanding, we expect to see SIGNET as a valuable tool for integrative GWAS analysis, thereby boosting the preven- tion, diagnosis, and treatment of human inherited diseases and eventually facilitating precision medicine.
