Adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas: Molecular characterization of 23 patients along with a literature review

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas(ASCP)is a rare entity. Like adenocarcinoma of the pancreas,overall survival is poor. Characteristics of ASCP include central tumor necrosis, along with osteoclasts and hypercalcemia. Various theories exist as to why this histological subtype exists, as normal pancreas tissue has no benign squamous epithelium. Due to the rarity of this disease, limited molecular analysis has been performed, and those reports indicate unique molecular features of ASCP. In this paper, we characterize 23 patients diagnosed with ASCP through molecular profiling using immunohistochemistry staining, fluorescent in situ hybridization, chromogenic in situ hybridization, and gene sequencing, Additionally, we provide a comprehensive literature review of what is known to date of *** characterization revealed overexpression in MRP1(80%), MGMT(79%), TOP2A(75), RRM1(42%),TOPO1(42%), PTEN(45%), CMET(40%), and C-KIT(10%) among others. One hundred percent of samples tested were positive for KRAS mutations. This analysis shows heretofore unsuspected leads to be considered for treatments of this rare type of exocrine pancreas cancer. Molecular profiling may be appropriate to provide maximum information regarding the patient's tumor. Further work should be pursued to better characterize this disease.

A microfluidic biosensor for the diagnosis ofchronic wasting disease

Cervids are affected by a neurologic disease that is always fatal to individuals and has population effects. This disease iscalled chronic wasting disease (CWD) and is caused by a misfolded prion protein. The disease is transmitted viacontact with contaminated body fluids and tissue or exposure to the environment, such as drinking water or *** CWD diagnosis depends on ELISA screening of cervid lymph nodes and subsequent immunohistochemistry(IHC) confirmation of ELISA-positive results. The disease has proven to be difficult to control in part because ofsensitivity and specificity issues with the current test regimen. We have investigated an accurate, rapid, and low-costmicrofluidic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) biosensing device for the detection of CWD pathologic prions inretropharyngeal lymph nodes (RLNs), which is the current standard type of CWD diagnostic sample. The deviceconsists of three novel regions for concentrating, trapping, and detecting the prion. The detection region includes anarray of electrodes coated with a monoclonal antibody against pathologic prions. The experimental conditions wereoptimized using an engineered prion control antigen. Testing could be completed in less than 1 hour with highsensitivity and selectivity. The biosensor detected the engineered prion antigen at a 1:24 dilution, while ELISA detectedthe same antigen at a 1:8 dilution. The relative limit of detection (rLOD) of the biosensor was a 1:1000 dilution of aknown strong positive RLN sample, whereas ELISA showed a rLOD of 1:100 dilution. Thus, the biosensor was 10 timesmore sensitive than ELISA, which is the currently approved CWD diagnostic test. The biosensor’s specificity andselectivity were confirmed using known negative RPLN samples, a negative control antibody (monoclonal antibodyagainst bovine coronavirus BCV), and two negative control antigens (bluetongue virus and Epizootic hemorrhagicdisease virus). Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport among a Collegiate Cross-Country Team

Objective: To investigate risk for relative energy deficiency in sports (RED-S) among a team of female and male collegiate long-distance runners. Methods: North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND, USA) female and male competitive long-distance runners who agreed to participate during fall semester, 2019, completed an electronic survey containing the LEAF-Q and EAT-26 surveys and additionally completed a DXA scan, to screen for low energy availability and RED-S, disordered eating/eating disorders, and bone health, respectively. Participants were required to be 18 - 25 years old, not injured, training a mini-mum of five hours per week, and currently participating as part of a collegiate competitive team. Thirteen participants (male = 3) finished the study which also included energy intake and exercise expenditure self-reported with a three-day food diary and exercise log and estimated with ESHA Food Processor. Response rate was 42% of entire team;mean age 19.8. Results: The LEAF-Q significantly predicted risk for RED-S (p z-scores (p Conclusion: Long distance runners at risk for RED-S may have higher occurrences of injuries and lower bone mineral density, which can be easily measured using available screeners and DXA technology.
