Cytochromes P450(CYPs)play a prominent role in catalyzing phase I xenobiotic biotransformation and account for about 75%of the total metabolism of commercially available drugs,including chemotherapeutics.The gene expression and enzyme activity of CYPs are variable between individuals,which subsequently leads to different patterns of susceptibility to carcinogenesis by genotoxic xenobiotics,as well as differences in the efficacy and toxicity of clinically used drugs.This research aimed to examine the presence of the CYP2B6*9 polymorphism and its possible association with the incidence of B-CLL in Egyptian patients,as well as the clinical outcome after receiving cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.DNA was isolated from whole blood samples of 100 de novo B-CLL cases and also from 100 sex-and age-matched healthy individuals.The presence of the CYP2B6*9(G516T)polymorphism was examined by PCR-based allele specific amplification(ASA).Patients were further indicated for receiving chemotherapy,and then they were followed up.The CYP2B6*9 variant indicated a statistically significant higher risk of B-CLL under different genetic models,comprising allelic(T-allele vs.G-allele,OR=4.8,p<0.001)and dominant(GT+TT vs.GG,OR=5.4,p<0.001)models.Following cyclophosphamide chemotherapy,we found that the patients with variant genotypes(GT+TT)were less likely to achieve remission compared to those with the wild-type genotype(GG),with a response percentage of(37.5%vs.83%,respectively).In conclusion,our findings showed that the CYP2B6*9(G516T)polymorphism is associated with B-CLL susceptibility among Egyptian patients.This variant greatly affected the clinical outcome and can serve as a good therapeutic marker in predicting response to cyclophosphamide treatment.

The design of nanostructured materials occupies a privileged position in the development and management of affordable and effective technology in the antibacterial sector.Here,we discuss the antimicrobial properties of three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts materials of graphene oxide(GO),reduced graphene oxide(RGO),and single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)that have a mechano-bactericidal effect,and the ability to piercing or slicing bacterial membranes.To demonstrate the significance of size,morphology and composition on the antibacterial activity mechanism,the designed nanomaterials have been characterized.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC),standard agar well diffusion,and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to evaluate the antibacterial activity of GO,RGO,and SWCNTs.Based on the evidence obtained,the three carbonaceous materials exhibit activity against all microbial strains tested by completely encapsulating bacterial cells and causing morphological disruption by degrading the microbial cell membrane in the order of RGO>GO>SWCNTs.Because of the external cell wall structure and outer membrane proteins,the synthesized carbonaceous nanomaterials exhibited higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains than Gram-negative and fungal microorganisms.RGO had the lowest MIC values(0.062,0.125,and 0.25 mg/mL against B.subtilis,S.aureus,and E.coli,respectively),as well as minimum fungal concentrations(0.5 mg/mL for both A.fumigatus and C.albicans).At 12 hr,the cell viability values against tested microbial strains were completely suppressed.Cell lysis and death occurred as a result of severe membrane damage caused by microorganisms perched on RGO nanoblades.Our work gives an insight into the design of effective graphene-based antimicrobial materials for water treatment and remediation.

An autonomous microgrid that runs on renewable energy sources is presented in this article.It has a supercon-ducting magnetic energy storage(SMES)device,wind energy-producing devices,and an energy storage battery.However,because such microgrids are nonlinear and the energy they create varies with time,controlling and managing the energy inside them is a difficult issue.Fractional-order proportional integral(FOPI)controller is recommended for the current research to enhance a standalone microgrid’s energy management and performance.The suggested dedicated control for the SMES comprises two loops:the outer loop,which uses the FOPI to regulate the DC-link voltage,and the inner loop,responsible for regulating the SMES current,is constructed using the intelligent FOPI(iFOPI).The FOPI+iFOPI parameters are best developed using the dandelion optimizer(DO)approach to achieve the optimum performance.The suggested FOPI+iFOPI controller’s performance is contrasted with a conventional PI controller for variations in wind speed and microgrid load.The optimal FOPI+iFOPI controller manages the voltage and frequency of the load.The behavior of the microgrid as a reaction to step changes in load and wind speed was measured using the proposed controller.MATLAB simulations were used to evaluate the recommended system’s performance.The results of the simulations showed that throughout all interruptions,the recommended microgrid provided the load with AC power with a constant amplitude and frequency.In addition,the required load demand was accurately reduced.Furthermore,the microgrid functioned incredibly well despite SMES and varying wind speeds.Results obtained under identical conditions were compared with and without the best FOPI+iFOPI controller.When utilizing the optimal FOPI+iFOPI controller with SMES,it was found that the microgrid performed better than the microgrid without SMES.

Strain engineering,as a cutting-edge method for modulating the electronic structure of catalysts,plays a crucial role in regulating the interaction between the catalytic surface and the adsorbed molecules.The electrocatalytic performance is influenced by the electronic structure,which can be achieved by introducing the external forces or stresses to adjust interatomic spacing between surface atoms.The challenges in strain engineering research lie in accurately understanding the mechanical impact of strain on performance.This paper first introduces the basic strategy for generating the strain,summarizes the different strain generation forms and their advantages and disadvantages.The progress in researching the characterization means for the lattice strains and their applications in the field of electrocatalysis is also emphasized.Finally,the challenges of strain engineering are introduced,and an outlook on the future research directions is provided.

Thermal energy storage technology has the advantages of high energy storage density,small size,and high energy conversion efficiency.It is one of the key energy storage technologies and an important way to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.Phase change materials (PCMs) offer this opportunity to store high amount of energy and release it in the form of latent heat when needed,and therefore have the advantage of being capable to alleviate the intrinsic intermittency of renewable power production,especially in wind and solar farms.

This paper presents a newly designed sensing system for 3-Dimensional(3D)mapping of underground optic fibre cable conduit with inertial sensors and encoder.This system consists of a sensing unit containing an inertial measurement unit(IMU)and battery,a duct rodder and a fibre blowing machine with an encoder.A sensor fusion algorithm is developed to estimate the orientation with the measurements of the gyroscope and accelerometer.With the assumption that the sensing unit only moves along one direction,the 3D trajectory or position of the sensing unit is estimated with the encoder readings and orientation estimation.Additional information,such as the orientation and position of the starting and ending points,are integrated into the algorithm to correct the sensing drifting and refine the position estimation.Experiments with three different layouts of the conduits are conducted and analysed graphically and numerically by comparing with the actual layouts。

A Novel Siamese Network for Few/Zero-Shot Handwritten Character Recognition Tasks

Deep metric learning is one of the recommended methods for the challenge of supporting few/zero-shot learning by deep networks.It depends on building a Siamese architecture of two homogeneous Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs)for learning a distance function that can map input data from the input space to the feature space.Instead of determining the class of each sample,the Siamese architecture deals with the existence of a few training samples by deciding if the samples share the same class identity or not.The traditional structure for the Siamese architecture was built by forming two CNNs from scratch with randomly initialized weights and trained by binary cross-entropy loss.Building two CNNs from scratch is a trial and error and time-consuming phase.In addition,training with binary crossentropy loss sometimes leads to poor margins.In this paper,a novel Siamese network is proposed and applied to few/zero-shot Handwritten Character Recognition(HCR)tasks.The novelties of the proposed network are in.1)Utilizing transfer learning and using the pre-trained AlexNet as a feature extractor in the Siamese architecture.Fine-tuning a pre-trained network is typically faster and easier than building from scratch.2)Training the Siamese architecture with contrastive loss instead of the binary cross-entropy.Contrastive loss helps the network to learn a nonlinear mapping function that enables it to map the extracted features in the vector space with an optimal way.The proposed network is evaluated on the challenging Chars74K datasets by conducting two experiments.One is for testing the proposed network in few-shot learning while the other is for testing it in zero-shot learning.The recognition accuracy of the proposed network reaches to 85.6%and 82%in few-and zero-shot learning respectively.In addition,a comparison between the performance of the proposed Siamese network and the traditional Siamese CNNs is conducted.The comparison results show that the proposed network achieves higher recognition results in less time.The propos

Many respiratory infections around the world have been caused by coronaviruses.COVID-19 is one of the most serious coronaviruses due to its rapid spread between people and the lowest survival rate.There is a high need for computer-assisted diagnostics(CAD)in the area of artificial intelligence to help doctors and radiologists identify COVID-19 patients in cloud systems.Machine learning(ML)has been used to examine chest X-ray frames.In this paper,a new transfer learning-based optimized extreme deep learning paradigm is proposed to identify the chest X-ray picture into three classes,a pneumonia patient,a COVID-19 patient,or a normal person.First,three different pre-trainedConvolutionalNeuralNetwork(CNN)models(resnet18,resnet25,densenet201)are employed for deep feature extraction.Second,each feature vector is passed through the binary Butterfly optimization algorithm(bBOA)to reduce the redundant features and extract the most representative ones,and enhance the performance of the CNN models.These selective features are then passed to an improved Extreme learning machine(ELM)using a BOA to classify the chest X-ray images.The proposed paradigm achieves a 99.48%accuracy in detecting covid-19 cases.
