Soil salinity is one of the major yield-limiting factors for crop production in many agricultural regions all over the world. Besides following efficient management practices at the field scale to reduce accumulation of salts in the effective root-zone, the effective use of treatments to alleviate the effects of salinity stress and improve crop salt tolerance is a promising solution to ensure crop production in such adverse conditions. A field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of foliar spray with plant-based biostimulant (i.e. with and/or without 3% yeast extract), three levels of proline (0, 25, and 50 mM), and combined with potassium fertilizers, as potassium sulfate, 48% K2O (0, 50, and 100 kg/fed.) on growth promotion, chemical composition of garlic leaves, bulb quality parameters as well as yield and its components of garlic plant grown under moderate saline soil. Results revealed that the interaction between foliar spray with yeast extract at 3% and proline at 50 mM combined with proper K level at 100 kg/fed., was the best interaction treatment for increasing vegetative growth parameters, i.e. plant height, number of leaves per plant, and mineral contents (N, P, K, S, Ca and Mg in leaves), and proline content of garlic leaves after 135 days from planting time, total yield/fed., and garlic yield quality parameters at harvesting time. In conclusion, the detrimental effects of salinity stress can be alleviated by stress tolerance-inducing compounds, such as yeast extract and proline with proper application rate of K fertilization during the growing season of garlic crop.

AIm.To study the relation between hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 and m.croalbum.nuria and renal im.airm.nt in relation to hepatic histology, and virem.a in the absence of cryoglobulinem.a, and to exam.ne the effect of treatm.nt on ***: Three hundred subjects, including 233 HCV genotype-4 infected patients, were tested for cryoglobulinem.a, m.croalbum.nuria, album.n creatinine ratio (ACR), urea, creatinine, and estim.ted glom.rular filtration rate (eGFR). The param.ters were m.asured again in the HCV patients after 48 wk of treatm.nt with pegylated interferon and ***: Significantly higher levels of m.croalbum.n- uria were detected in HCV-positive patients com.ared to HCV-negative controls (m.dian 9.5 vs 5.9, respectively, Kruskal-Wallis P=0.017). Log m.croalbum.nuria was significantly correlated with hepatic inflam.ation (r=0.13, P=0.036) and f ibrosis (r=0.12, P=0.061), but not with viral load (r=-0.03, P=0.610), or alanine transam.nase (r=-0.03, P=0.617). Diabetes m.llitus neither significantly m.derated (χ2=0.13, P=0.720), nor m.diated (Sobel test P=0.49) the HCV effect. HCV status was signifi cantly associated with log m.croalbu-m.nuria (χ2=4.97, P=0.026), adjusting for age, gender, diabetes, cryoglobulinem.a, urea and creatinine. A positive HCV status was not significantly associated with low eGFR (m./m.n every 1.73 m.) [odds ratio (OR): 0.5, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.2-1.4], nor with high ACR (OR: 1.7, 95% CI:0.7-4.1). End-of-treatm.nt response (ETR) was achieved in 51.9% of patients. Individuals with ETR had significantly lower m.croalbum.nuria post-treatm.nt (χ2=8.19, P=0.004).CONCLUSION: HCV affected the developm.nt of m.croalbum.nuria independent of diabetes or cryoglobulinem.a. Com.ination therapy of pegylated interferon-ribavirin had a positive effect in reducing m.croalbum.nuria.

The paper exam.nes the propagation direction and velocity of large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances （LST1Ds） during extrem. geom.gnetic storm. in the 23rd solar cycle （e.g., October 2003 and Novem.er 2003 storm.） using GPS observations. In the analysis, the tim. delay between the vertical total electron content （VTEC） structures at Scott Base, m.m.rdo, Davis and Casey GPS stations and the distance between these stations were the m.in param.ters in the determ.nation of LSTIDs propagation speed and direction. The observations during October and Novem.er 2003 storm. show obvious tim. delay between the total electron content （TEC） enhancem.nt signatures at these stations. The tim. delay suggests a m.vem.nt of the ionospheric disturbances from.higher to lower latitudes during the October storm.with a velocity of 800-1 200 m.s and poleward propagation of LSTIDs during the Novem.er storm.with a ve- locity of 300-400 m.s. The equatorward or poleward expansion of LSTIDs during the October and Novem.er 2003 storm. is probably caused by the disturbances of the neutral tem.erature occurring close to the dayside convection throat or by the neutral wind oscillation induced by atm.spheric gravity waves （AGW） launched from.the aurora region.

目的探讨声强对豚鼠下丘相位型神经元时间分辨率的影响。方法选取40只健康成年豚鼠,采用单细胞记录的方法,刺激信号为含有一定时间间隔的两段白噪声,其时间间隔分别为0、1、2、3、6、9、12、24、48和96m.。分别观察阈上15、35和55dB对豚鼠下丘相位型神经元的最小间隔阈值、间隔后放电恢复率及首次放电潜伏期的影响。结果共记录到166个神经元,本研究仅观察相位型神经元,共计90个。不同声强刺激时,下丘相位型神经元的最小间隔阈值无明显差异,分别为8.81±1.08m.、7.08±0.78m.和7.11±0.67m.。不同声强刺激时,下丘相位型神经元的间隔后放电恢复率无明显差异。不同声强刺激时,下丘相位型神经元的首次放电潜伏期有统计学差异,分别为7.28±0.15m.、5.75±0.14m.和5.05±0.13m.。结论声强对豚鼠下丘相位型神经元的时间分辨率无明显影响,神经元响应随声强的提高而加快。

We explore the use of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) as a m.tigation technique for the treatm.nt of drinking water that was artificially enriched with Rn-222 in laboratory by placing a radium.rich granite stone (pitchblende) in a closed container filled with tap water for several days in order to allow Rn-222 concentration to approach its highest possible level. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) was im.ersed into the water container in order to adsorb Rn-222 in radon-rich water. The optim.m.activation procedure for GAC preparation was determ.ned. Suitable contact tim. and optim.m.quantities of GAC needed to reduce Rn-222 concentration in water were experim.ntally determ.ned. There is a m.ch greater increase in Rn-222 rem.val from.water in the ranges from.1 part: 1000 parts to 4 parts: 1000 parts GAC/water ratios. Further increase in GAC/water ratio slowly affects the Rn-222 rem.val.

Superconductor sam.les of type (CoFe2O4)xGdBa2Cu3O7-δ (0≤x≤0.1) were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction technique, whereas nanosized CoFe2O4 was prepared by co-precipitation m.thod with grain size of about 8.5 nm. The elem.ntal content of the prepared sam.les was determ.ned using particle induced X-ray em.ssion (PIXE). The tem.erature dependence of real (χ’) and im.ginary (χ?) com.onents of AC m.gnetic susceptibility (ACm.) at different m.gnetic field am.litude (3-15 Oe) was investigated. The analysis of the tem.erature dependence of ACm. was perform.d using Bean critical state m.del. The values of the critical current density J c at T > T p (T p is the inter-granular loss peak tem.erature) were calculated as a function of m.gnetic field and nanosized CoFe2O4 content. It was found that the low nanosized CoFe2O4 addition content (x = 0.01) im.roves the critical current density J c of Gd-123 superconducting phase. The observed variation of J c with tem.erature indicated that the weak links are changed from.superconductor-norm.l m.tal-superconductor (SNS) for free sam.le to superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) type of junctions for sam.les added with nanosized CoFe2O4 of x > 0.01. We also discussed the experim.ntal results in the fram.work of the critical state m.del to estim.te the effective volum. fraction of the grains f g using Cole-Cole plots.

We report usefulness of ultrasound used as an adjunct diagnostic tool to m.m.ogram.in routine annual checkup for wom.n breasts of certain ages and breast m.ss. The purpose of breast im.ging is to detect areas of tissue distortion and breast cancers. A m.m.ogram.is the com.on diagnostic im.ging m.dality used to find breast diseases but som.tim.s the m.m.ogram.m.ght not give the doctor enough inform.tion especially in wom.n with dense breasts. As a result, the patient m.y be asked to undergo ultrasound or m.gnetic resonance im.ging as a better m.an of judgm.nt to the case. Because ultrasound is widely used, sim.le and safe to patients we were encouraged to em.hasis on exploring its role adjunct to m.m.ogram. A retrospective observation study was done at the diagnostic radiology departm.nt at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) in the period from.January 2012 to June 2012;we covered all wom.n with dense breasts in m.m.ography and ultrasound units. The study group was 40 patients. All patients were im.ged with both m.m.ography and ultrasound. The statistical m.asures of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were calculated using the SPSS program. The results we obtained suggest that age and the physical density of breast potentially affect m.m.ogram.im.ges of wom.n with 41 years or sm.ller with sensitivity 66% and specificity 68%. Therefore, we recom.end using ultrasound alongside the m.m.ogram.in wom.n with dense breast for better diagnosis of sm.ll cancers that were not identified on m.m.ography or clinical breast exam.nation alone.

m.I is an excellent option for detection of breast cancer for som. selected groups, including those patients with a high probability to hit the disease. However, the high costs and low availability of the device have led to a decline in the application of im.ging m.I. The aim.of this study was to review usefulness of m.I as a new com.lem.ntary way to detect breast cancer in routine annual checkup for wom.n breasts of certain ages and breast m.ss. A cross-sectional Descriptive m.I study was perform.d on 105 asym.tom.tic wom.n with a m.an age of 49 years. The study group with at least one risk factor of breast cancer were presenting for routine annual screening or follow up at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah. It has been found that, 48 patients had biopsy, they were recom.ended by m.gnetic resonance im.ging and only 14 had positive results, while m.gnetic resonance im.ging suggested 16 and m.m.ography had 62 positive results. m.gnetic resonance im.ging is not recom.ended for the average-risk or the general population either;it had been advised for screening the high-risk wom.n of breast cancer. Sensitivity of m.gnetic resonance im.ging has been found to be m.ch higher than of m.m.ography but specificity was generally lower. We propose that it is reasonable to consider m.I as a com.lem.nt to m.m.ography in screening patients who were at high risk for breast cancer because m.gnetic Resonance Im.ging can detect sm.ll foci that are occult in m.m.ography but we don’t advise to check with the general population.

Background: One of the m.jor challenges in m.naging acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding involves the identification of patients who are at high risk of rebleeding and death;conversely, the identification of patients who are suitable for early discharge and outpatient endoscopy is also im.ortant for effective resource. The use of Rockall system.has been shown to represent accurate and valid predictor of rebleeding and death. The aim.of this prospective study was to evaluate validity of Rockall score for prediction of rebleeding and m.rtality in Egyptian patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients and m.thods: 50 patients presented with upper GI bleeding were subjected to detailed clinical, laboratory, sonographic and endoscopic exam.nation together with Rockall score calculation. Results: According to the findings of upper GI endoscopy patients were further subdivided into two subgroups as follows: Group 1 (n = 32): Patients with portal hypertension m.nifested by variceal bleeding and/or portal hypertensive gastropathy;and Group 2 (n = 18): other causes of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (peptic ulcer disease, m.llory Weiss syndrom.…). Clinical condition of the patients was assessed after 48 hours and m.rtality was recorded. Rockall score was the highest in m.rtality group, and higher in rebleeding group than stable group (P m.ng hepatic patients (P m.rtality with sensitivity 100% and 93.5% specificity. Conclusion: Rockall score is clinically useful in prediction of rebleeding and m.rtality in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
