The conventional pseudo-static approach often neglects the effect of the vertical＇ seismic acceleration on the stability of a slope, but some analyses under plane-strain （2D） conditions show a significant effect on the slope stability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the vertical acceleration on the safety of three-dimensional （3D） slopes. In the strict framework of limit analysis, a 3D kinematically admissible rotational failure mechanism is adopted here for 3D homogeneous slopes in frictional/cohesive soils. A set of stability charts is presented in a wide range of parameters for 3D slopes under combined horizontal and vertical seismic loading conditions. Accounting for the effects of the vertical seismic acceleration, the difference in safety factors for 3D slopes can exceed 10%, which will significantly overestimate the safety of the 3D slopes.

The accuracy of an articulated torque analysis influences the comprehensive performances of heavy-duty multi-legged robots. Currently, the extremal estimation method and some complex methods are employed to calculate the articulated torques, which results in a large safety margin or a large number of calculations. To quickly obtain accurate articulated torques, an analysis method for the articulated torque is presented for an electrically driven heavy-duty six-legged robot. First, the rearmost leg that experiences the maximum normal contact force is confirmed when the robot transits a slope. Based on the ant-type and crab-type tripod gaits, the formulas of classical mechanics and MATLAB software are employed to theoretically analyze the relevant static torques of the joints. With the changes in the joint angles for the abductor joint, hip joint, and knee joint, variable tendency charts and extreme curves are obtained for the static articulated torques. Meanwhile, the maximum static articulated torques and the corresponding poses of the robot are also obtained. According to the poses of the robot under the maximum static articulated torques, ADAMS software is used to carry out a static simulation analysis. Based on the relevant simulation curves of the articulated torques, the maximum static articulated torques are acquired. A comparative analysis of the maximum static articulated torques shows that the theoretical calculation values are higher than the static simulation values, and the maximum error value is approximately 10%. The proposed method lays a foundation for quickly determining accurate articulated torques to develop heavy-duty six-legged robots.

Studies on Preparation of Co-Bi Alloy Films by Electrodeposition From Nonaqueous Medium

Cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic electrolysis were used to investigate the preparation of Co-Bi alloy films in a LiClO 4-DMSO system. The experimental results indicate that the Co-Bi alloy films containing 14 35%-29 77% Co can be prepared via potentionstatic electrolysis on Cu substrates, at deposition potential -1 10--1 65 V( vs. SCE) and by controlling the system composition and deposition condition. They are uniform gray films with a metallic luster and they are adhered firmly to the Cu substrate. The films were analyzed by EDS, SEM and XRD. After heat treatment of crystallization at 275 ℃ for 1 h, the alloy phase of Co-Bi can be confirmed via the XRD pattern.

Proteins are essential players of life activities, lntraceUular protein levels directly affect cellular functions and cell fate. Upon cell division, the proteins in the mother cell are inherited by the daughters. However, what factors and by how much they affect this epigenetic inheritance of protein abundance remains unclear. Using both computational and experimental approaches, we systematically investigated this problem. We derived an analytical expression for the dependence of protein inheritance on various factors and showed that it agreed with numerical simulations of protein production and experimental results. Our work provides a framework for quantitative studies of protein inheritance and for the potential application of protein memory manipulation.

A Prototype of a Biomimetic Mantle Jet Propeller Inspired by Cuttlefish Actuated by SMA Wires and a Theoretical Model for Its Jet Thrust

The cuttlefish have higher swimming speed and more maneuverability than most of the fish mainly benefiting from their unique jet propulsion mechanism, which is realized by the contraction and expansion of their flexible mantle. However it is difficult to mimic this jet propulsion mechanism using conventional electro-mechanical structures. In this paper, the musculature of the cuttlefish mantle and how the mantle flexibly contracts and expands were analyzed first. Then the Shape Memory Alloy（SMA） wires were chosen as the actuators and the soft silica gel was chosen as the body materials to develop a biomimetic mantle jet propeller. The SMA wires were embedded within the soft silica gel formed with cuttlefish mantle shape along the annular direction to mimic the circular muscles of cuttlefish mantle. The water was squeezed out the mantle cavity to form rear jets when the biomimetic mantle was contracted by SMA wires. A mechanical model and a thermal model were established to analyze the jet thrust and the jetting frequency. Theoretical analysis shows that the jet thrust is proportional to the square of the rate of change of SMA strain. Increasing the driving voltage can improve the rate of change of SMA strain, thus can improve both the jet thrust and the jetting frequency. However the j etting frequency is mainly restricted by the cooling of SMA wires. To maximize the jetting frequency, the optimal driving parameters for different driving voltage were calculated. The propulsion performance was tested and the results show that the jet thrust can increase with the driving voltage as predicted and the maximum average jet thrust is 0.14 N when the driving voltage is 25 V. The swimming test was carried out to verify the feasibility of the novel design. It is shown that the biomimetic jet propeller can swim with higher speed as the jet thrust and jetting frequency increase and the maximum speed can reach 8.76 cm·s^-1 （0.35 BL·s^-1） at a jetting frequency of 0.83 Hz.

Controlling the key by choosing the detection bits in quantum cryptographic protocols

Eavesdropping detection is an indispensable process of most quantum cryptographic protocols. By publishing and comparing part of the shared bits, called as detection bits, the participants can check whether there exists an eavesdropper. Generally, the detection bits are chosen randomly. Consequently, the secret bits, i.e., the rest bits, are also random. Then, what if the detection bits are chosen non-randomly? Can the participant who chooses the detection bits make the secret bits to be a predetermined string he expected?This paper focuses on the participants’ key control capability when they choose the detection bits selectively in two-party quantum communication protocols. Concretely, we analyze the participants’ key control capability in different situations of different proportions of the detection bits. And we prove that the participants can predetermine, with high probability, any part of the secret bits of which the length is smaller than that of the detection bits. The above result has various potential applications in quantum cryptographic ***, utilizing this non-random selection of the detection bits, one can realize the function of a deterministic quantum key distribution protocol through a random one if the number of the detection bits is not smaller than that of the secret bits. What is more, we find that quite a few quantum key agreement protocols cannot guarantee the fairness of the key in the sense that the participant who chooses the detection bits can control the key somewhat.
