Optimization strategies for Cd and Pb immobilization in soil using meta-analysis combined with numerical modeling

Chemical immobilization is one of the most effective technologies for remediating sites with heavy metals,but the selection of proper immobilization material and determination of its dose ratio is a challenge that limits the remediation efficiency.In this study,we conducted a meta-analysis of 489 independent observations on the immobilization of heavy metals,in which the immobilization materials were divided into biochar,phosphate,lime,metal oxides,and clay minerals.The statistical analysis of these observations revealed that the material dose ratio was the most important parameter that controlled immobilization efficiency,and the Freundlich adsorption model was successfully applied to calculate the bioavailable heavy metal(BHM)concentration after immobilization.Based on the calculation results,phosphate was the most effective material for Pb immobilization.Lime was the most effective when the initial bioavailable Cd content was 0.1–1 mg kg^(-1),whereas the immobilization effects of lime and phosphate were similar when the initial bioavailable Cd content was 10 mg kg^(-1).In addition to the material dose ratio,initial soil pH(pHi)and organic matter(OM)content were negatively correlated,whereas the fraction of initial BHMs before immobilization(FB)and immobilization time were positively correlated with immobilization efficiency.A numerical model that considered the material dose ratio,pHi,OM,FB,and immobilization time was established to calculate the residual BHM concentration after immobilization.However,these factors only explained less than 45%of the immobilization effect,indicating that other factors,such as the sub-type of the material and modification methods,also affect the immobilization effect.These results could help to optimize the type of immobilization material of heavy metals and its dose ratio in practical engineering applications.

Characterization of the temperature and oxygen concentration field in a decentralized solid‑waste incinerator for villages and towns

Decentralized solid-waste incinerators(DSWIs)have certain advantages for waste disposal from villages and towns.However,the incineration condition is always affected by the distribution of temperature and oxygen concentration,which causes difficulties in operation and maintenance.In this study,the temperature and oxygen concentration distribution of DSWI were characterized using different air flow rates and bottom ash volumes.The results showed that the adjustment of air flow has no significant influence on the heating process of the DSWI,while the retention of bottom ash did affect the temperature and oxygen concentration fields in the furnace.When the air flow rate was increased without the retention of bottom ash,99%of the furnace volume temperature was observed between 780℃ and 800℃.However,once the bottom ash was retained,the whole furnace temperature was steadily maintained between 800℃ and 850℃.When the air flow rate was increased without bottom ash,the highest furnace volume percentage of oxygen concentrations higher than 3%maxed out at 11%volume,while it could reach 100%when bottom ash remained.The distribution of the temperature and oxygen concentration in the DSWI characterized by this research provides strong support for the operation and management of such systems.

Zeolite-encapsulated metal nanoclusters are at the heart of bifunctional catalysts,which hold great potential for petrochemical conversion and the emerging sustainable biorefineries.Nevertheless,efficient encapsulation of metal nanoclusters into a high-silica zeolite Y in particular with good structural integrity still remains a significant challenge.Herein,we have constructed Ru nanoclusters(~1 nm)encapsulated inside a high-silica zeolite Y(SY)with a SiO_(2)/Al_(2)O_(3) ratio(SAR)of 10 via a cooperative strategy for direct zeolite synthesis and a consecutive impregnation for metal encapsulation.Compared with the benchmark Ru/H-USY and other analogues,the as-prepared Ru/H-SY markedly boosts the yields of pentanoic biofuels and stability in the direct hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived levulinate even at a mild temperature of 180℃,which are attributed to the notable stabilization of transition states by the enhanced acid accessibility and properly sized constraints of zeolite cavities owing to the good structural integrity.

Recent advances in multifunctional shape memory photonic crystals and practical applications

Shape memory photonic crystals(SMPCs)are smart composite materials with changeable structural color integrated by shape memory polymer and photonic crystals.SMPC can produce one or more temporary shapes through nanoscale deformation,memorizing current states.SMPC can be recovered to their original shapes or some intermediate states under external stimuli,accompanied by the variation of structural color.As porous carriers with built-in sensing properties,SMPCs promoted the interdisciplinary development of nanophotonic technology in materials science,environmental engineering,biomedicine,chemical engineering,and mechanics.Herein,the recent progress on multifunctional SMPCs and practical applications,including traditional and cold programmable SMPCs,is summarized and discussed.The primary concern is shape programming at the nanoscale that has demonstrated numerous attractive functions,including smart sensing,ink-free printing,solvent detection,reprogrammable gradient wetting,and controllable bubble transportation,under variations of the surface nanostructure.It aims to figure out the nanoscale shape memory effects on structural color conversion and additional performance,inspiring the fabrication of the next generation of SMPCs.Finally,perspectives on future research directions and applications are also presented.It is believed that multifunctional SMPCs are powerful nanophotonic tools for the interdisciplinary development of numerous disciplines in the future.

Understanding the spatial interaction of ultrasounds based on three-dimensional dual-frequency ultrasonic field numerical simulation

A transient 3D model was established to investigate the effect of spatial interaction of ultrasounds on the dual-frequency ultrasonic field in magnesium alloy melt.The effects of insertion depth and tip shape of the ultrasonic rods,input pressures and their ratio on the acoustic field distribution were discussed in detail.Additionally,the spacing,angle,and insertion depth of two ultrasonic rods significantly affect the interaction between distinct ultrasounds.As a result,various acoustic pressure distributions and cavitation regions are obtained.The spherical rods mitigate the longitudinal and transversal attenuation of acoustic pressure and expand the cavitation volume by 53.7%and 31.7%,respectively,compared to the plate and conical rods.Increasing the input pressure will enlarge the cavitation region but has no effect on the acoustic pressure distribution pattern.The acoustic pressure ratio significantly affects the pressure distribution and the cavitation region,and the best cavitation effect is obtained at the ratio of 2:1(P15:P20).

Adaptive sampling for corrugated plate digitization using a laser displacement sensor

The surface quality of a corrugated plate directly determines the heat transfer property of the thermal power mechanical apparatus.Traditional detection methods are impractical for real-world production,being slow and destructive.In contrast,the point laser displacement sensor,employing the optical triangle method,emerges as a promising device for assessing parts with variable curvature and highly reflective surfaces.Despite its benefits,high-density sampling by an innate frequency introduces challenges such as data redundancy and a poor signal-to-noise ratio,potentially affecting the efficiency and precision of subsequent data processing.To address these challenges,adjustable frequency data sampling has been developed for this sensor,allowing adaptive sampling for corrugated plate digitization.The process begins with surface digitization to extract discrete points,which are transformed into intersection curves using the B-spline fitting technique.Subsequently,dominant points are identified,considering multigeometric constraints for curvature and arch height.Finally,the sampling signal is adjusted based on the distribution information of dominant points.Comparative results indicate that the proposed method effectively minimizes redundant sampling without compromising the accurate capture of essential geometric features.

A systematic COSMO-RS study on mutual solubility of ionic liquids and C6-hydrocarbons

When considering the usage of ionic liquids(ILs)for reactions and separations involving non-polar or weak-polar hydrocarbons,the knowledge of the mutual solubility behaviors of ILs and hydrocarbons is of the utmost importance.In this work,taking four typical C6-hydrocarbons namely benzene,cyclohexene,cyclohexane,and hexane as representatives,the mutual solubility of ILs and non-polar or weak-polar hydrocarbons are systematically studied based on the COSMO-RS model.The reliability of COSMO-RS for these systems is first evaluated by comparing experimental and predicted hydrocarbon-in-IL activity coefficient at infinite dilution and binary/ternary liquid-liquid equilibria of related systems.Then,the mutual solubility of the four hydrocarbons and13,650 ILs(composed by 210 cations and 65 anions)are predicted.The effect of different IL structural characteristics including alkyl chain length,cation family/symmetry/functional group,and anion on the IL-hydrocarbon mutual solubility behaviors are further analyzed by the analyses of interaction energy and screen charge distribution.The mutual solubility databases and the structural effects identified thereon could provide useful guidance for IL selection in related applications.

Deciphering and integrating invariants for neural operator learning with various physical mechanisms

Neural operators have been explored as surrogate models for simulating physical systems to overcome the limitations of traditional partial differential equation(PDE) solvers. However, most existing operator learning methods assume that the data originate from a single physical mechanism, limiting their applicability and performance in more realistic scenarios. To this end, we propose the physical invariant attention neural operator(PIANO) to decipher and integrate the physical invariants for operator learning from the PDE series with various physical mechanisms. PIANO employs self-supervised learning to extract physical knowledge and attention mechanisms to integrate them into dynamic convolutional layers.Compared to existing techniques, PIANO can reduce the relative error by 13.6%–82.2% on PDE forecasting tasks across varying coefficients, forces or boundary conditions. Additionally, varied downstream tasks reveal that the PI embeddings deciphered by PIANO align well with the underlying invariants in the PDE systems, verifying the physical significance of PIANO.

Public transport inclusion and active aging: A systematic review on elderly mobility

Global aging has brought attention to addressing the elderly mobility dilemma,and a commitment to address inclusive transport in aging.Transport inclusion for older adults aims at establishing an age-friendly transport system.As a direct policy goal and promoting active aging as an indirect social goal,to help older populations gain access to transport and social opportunities.Based on the analysis of scientific knowledge mapping over the past 30 years,this study visualizes the hotspots and trends in elderly mobility research.Through a qualitative analysis of 138 papers,this paper reviews the theoretical foundations for transport inclusion and three themes of elderly mobility research,proposes a framework for public transport(PT)inclusion research as well as future research directions.The study suggests that transport inclusion can help enhance elderly health,social participation,and subjective well-being.It can improve their travel opportunities for active aging in four ways:opportunity accessibility,physical accessibility,age-friendly informationalization,and cost affordability.Future research should pay attention to examining the mechanism of perceived transport inclusion on active aging,expanding the multilevel research space of the capability approach(CA),and exploring the subjectiveobjective integrated research model for PT inclusion.This research contributes to the overall knowledge of the theoretical and empirical researches on PT inclusion for the elderly and promotes the integrated application of interdisciplinary knowledge in the field.
