Obesity, metabolic abnormalities, and mortality in older men

Background Older adults are prone to obesity and metabolic abnormalities and recommended to pursue a normal weight especially when obesity and metabolic abnormalities are co-existed. However, few studies have reported the possible differences in the effect of obesity on outcomes between older adults with metabolic abnormalities and those without metabolic abnormalities. Methods A total of 3485 older men were included from 2000 to 2014. All-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were obtained during a mean follow-up of five years Metabolic abnormalities were defined as having established hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia and taking the disease-related medications. All participants were stratified by the presence or absence of metabolic abnormalities. Results In the non-metabolic abnormalities group, all-cause and cardiovascular deaths were lowest in overweight participants and highest in obese participants. In the metabolic abnormalities group, mortality was also lowest in overweight participants but highest in participants with normal weight. After adjustment for covariates, hazard ratios （95% CI） for all-cause death and cardiovascular death were 0.68 （0.51, 0.92） and 0.59 （0.37, 0.93）, respectively, in overweight participants with metabolic abnormalities. Furthermore, obesity was not associated with mortality risk in both groups. These findings were unchanged in stratified analyses. Conclusions Overweight was negatively associated with mortality risk in older men with metabolic abnormalities but not in those without metabolic abnormalities. Obesity did not increase death risk regardless of metabolic abnormalities. These findings suggest that the recommendation of pursuing a normal weight may be wrong in overweight/obese older men, especially for those with metabolic abnormalities.

Associations between Body Composition Indices and Metabolic Disorders in Chinese Adults： A Cross-Sectional Observational Study

Background： Obesity induces dyslipidemia, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and inflammatory state, which results in atherogenic processes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. We usually use body composition indices, such as body mass index （BMI）, body fat percentage （BFP）, waist circumference-height ratio （WHtR）, and waist-hip ratio （WHR） to reflect the obesity. The aim of this large population-based cross-sectional study was to investigate the associations between body composition indices and metabolic parameters in Chinese adults. Methods： A total of 12,018 Chinese adults were included. Body composition indices, such as BMI, BFP, WHtR, and WHR, and metabolic parameters, such as systolic blood pressure （SBP）, diastolic blood pressure （DBP）, total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol （LDL-C）, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol （HDL-C）, fasting blood glucose （FBG）, 2 h postprandial blood glucose （2h PBG）, glycosylated hemoglobin （HbA1c）, fasting insulin （FINS）, insulin resistance index （HOMA-IR）, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）, and white blood cell count （WBC）, were measured and analyzed. All analyses were stratified by gender. Results： All body composition indices and metabolic parameters except 2h PBG differed significantly between males and females （all P 〈 0.001）. BMI was positively associated with SBP, DBP, LDL-C, TC, TG, FBG, 2h PBG, HbA1c, FINS, HOMA-IR, hs-CRP, and WBC, and inversely associated with HDL-C; similar relationships were identified between the metabolic parameters and BFP, WHtR, and WHR. In the multivariate analysis, the odds of impaired glucose regulation, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and increased hs-CRP were 1.36, 1.92, 3.44, and 1.27 times greater in the overweight group than those in the normal weight group, respectively, and 1.66, 3.26, 7.53, and 1.70 times greater in the obese group than those in the normal weight group, respectively. A New Method for Solving Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Based on Liquid Time-Constant Networks

In this paper,physics-informed liquid networks(PILNs)are proposed based on liquid time-constant networks(LTC)for solving nonlinear partial differential equations(PDEs).In this approach,the network state is controlled via ordinary differential equations(ODEs).The significant advantage is that neurons controlled by ODEs are more expressive compared to simple activation *** addition,the PILNs use difference schemes instead of automatic differentiation to construct the residuals of PDEs,which avoid information loss in the neighborhood of sampling *** this method draws on both the traveling wave method and physics-informed neural networks(PINNs),it has a better physical ***,the KdV equation and the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation are solved to test the generalization ability of the *** the best of the authors’knowledge,this is the first deep learning method that uses ODEs to simulate the numerical solutions of PDEs.

Copper-coated Porous Polyimide as Ultralight and Safe Current Collectors for Advanced LIBs

Metallic copper is widely used as current collector(CC) for graphite anode of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) due to its high electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the large volume density of commercial copper foil(~8.9 g·cm^(-3)) limits the increase of energy density of battery. Here, copper-coated porous polyimide(Cu@PPI) was prepared by vacuum evaporation as collector for the graphite anode. The sandwich structure connects the copper metal on both sides of the collector with excellent electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial Cu foil, Cu@PPI has lighter mass(≤3.9 mg for disc of 12 mm diameter versus 9.9 mg of ~10 μm Cu foil) and lower volume density(≤3.3 g·cm^(-3)). In addition, the porous structure allows of better adhesion of reactive substances and electrochemical properties than pure Cu foils. It is estimated that the energy density of Cu@PPI should be much higher than that of Cu foil. This strategy should be applicable for other current collectors.

Physical informed memory networks for solving PDEs:implementation and applications

With the advent of physics informed neural networks(PINNs),deep learning has gained interest for solving nonlinear partial differential equations(PDEs)in recent *** this paper,physics informed memory networks(PIMNs)are proposed as a new approach to solving PDEs by using physical laws and dynamic behavior of *** the fully connected structure of the PINNs,the PIMNs construct the long-term dependence of the dynamics behavior with the help of the long short-term memory ***,the PDEs residuals are approximated using difference schemes in the form of convolution filter,which avoids information loss at the neighborhood of the sampling ***,the performance of the PIMNs is assessed by solving the Kd V equation and the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation,and the effects of difference schemes,boundary conditions,network structure and mesh size on the solutions are *** show that the PIMNs are insensitive to boundary conditions and have excellent solution accuracy even with only the initial conditions.

Design and performance evaluation of a large field-of-view dual-particle time-encoded imager based on a depth-of-interaction detector

Invisible and semi-invisible decays of bottom baryons

The similar densities of dark matter and baryons in the universe imply that they may arise from the same ultraviolet model.B-Mesogenesis,which assumes dark matter is charged under the baryon number,attempts to simultaneously explain the origin of baryon asymmetry and dark matter in the *** particular,B-Mesogenesis may induce bottom-baryon decays into invisible or semi-invisible final states,which provide a distinctive signal for probing this *** this work,we systematically study the invisible decays of bottom baryons into dark matter and the semi-invisible decays of bottom baryons into a meson or a photon together with a dark matter *** particular,the fully invisible decay can reveal the stable particles in *** QCD-based frameworks are used to calculate the hadronic matrix elements under the B-Mesogenesis *** estimate the constraints on the Wilson coefficients or the product of some new physics couplings with the Wilson coefficients according to the semi-invisible and invisible decays of bottom baryons detectable at future colliders.
