Intelligent Evidence-Based Management for Data Collection and Decision-Making Using Algorithmic Randomness and Active Learning

We describe here a comprehensive framework for intelligent information management (IIM) of data collection and decision-making actions for reliable and robust event processing and recognition. This is driven by algorithmic information theory (AIT), in general, and algorithmic randomness and Kolmogorov complexity (KC), in particular. The processing and recognition tasks addressed include data discrimination and multilayer open set data categorization, change detection, data aggregation, clustering and data segmentation, data selection and link analysis, data cleaning and data revision, and prediction and identification of critical states. The unifying theme throughout the paper is that of “compression entails comprehension”, which is realized using the interrelated concepts of randomness vs. regularity and Kolmogorov complexity. The constructive and all encompassing active learning (AL) methodology, which mediates and supports the above theme, is context-driven and takes advantage of statistical learning, in general, and semi-supervised learning and transduction, in particular. Active learning employs explore and exploit actions characteristic of closed-loop control for evidence accumulation in order to revise its prediction models and to reduce uncertainty. The set-based similarity scores, driven by algorithmic randomness and Kolmogorov complexity, employ strangeness / typicality and p-values. We propose the application of the IIM framework to critical states prediction for complex physical systems;in particular, the prediction of cyclone genesis and intensification.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia(HSP)is a group of genetic motor neuron diseases resulting from length-dependent axonal degeneration of the corticospinal upper motor *** to the advancement of next-generation sequencing,more than 70 novel HSP disease-causing genes have been identified in the past *** this,our understanding of HSP physiopathology and the development of efficient management and treatment strategies remain *** major challenge in studying HSP pathogenicity is selective neuronal vulnerability,characterized by the manifestation of clinical symptoms that are restricted to specific neuronal populations,despite the presence of germline disease-causing variants in every cell of the ***,disease genes may exhibit ubiquitous expression patterns and involve a myriad of different pathways to cause motor neuron *** the current review,we explore the correlation between transcriptomic data and clinical manifestations,as well as the importance of interspecies models by comparing tissue-specific transcriptomic profiles of humans and mice,expression patterns of different genes in the brain during development,and single-cell transcriptomic data from related ***,we discuss the potential of emerging single-cell RNA sequencing technologies to resolve unanswered questions related to HSP pathogenicity.

Atmospheric acceleration and Earth-expansion deceleration of the Earth rotation

Previous studies suggest that tidal friction gives rise to the secular deceleration of the Earth rotation by a quantity of about 2.25 ms/cy. Here we just consider additional contributions to the secular Earth rotation deceleration. Atmospheric solar semi-diurnal tide has a small amplitude and certain amount of phase lead. This periodic global air-mass excess distribution exerts a quasi-constant torque to accelerate the Earth＇s spin rotation. Using an updated atmospheric tide model, we re-estimate the amounts of this atmospheric acceleration torque and corresponding energy input, of which the associated change rate in LOD（length of day） is-0.1 ms/cy. In another aspect, evidences from space-geodesy and sea level rise observations suggest that Earth expands at a rate of 0.35 mm/yr in recent decades, which gives rise to the increase of LOD at rate of 1.0 ms/cy. Hence, if the previous estimate due to the tidal friction is correct, the secular Earth rotation deceleration due to tidal friction and Earth expansion should be 3.15 ms/cy.

Light attenuation cross-section of black carbon in an urban atmosphere in northern China

Fine particulate matter （PM2.5） samples were collected over two years in Xi＇an, China to investigate the relationships between the aerosol composition and the light absorption efficiency of black carbon （BC）. Real-time light attenuation of BC at 880 nm was measured with an aethalometer. The mass concentrations and elemental carbon （EC） contents of PM2.5 were obtained, and light attenuation cross-sections （σATN） of PM2.5 BC were derived. The mass of EC contributed -5% to PM2.5 on average. BC σATN exhibited pronounced seasonal variability with values averaging 18.6, 24.2,16.4, and 26.0 m^2/g for the spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively, while averaging 23.0 m^2/g overall. σATN varied inversely with the ratios of EC/PM2.5, EC/[SO4^2- ], and EC/[NO3-]. This study of the variability in σATN illustrates the complexity of the interactions among the aerosol constituents in northern China and documents certain effects of the high EC, dust, sulfate and nitrate loadings on light attenuation.

Heterogeneous information networks(HINs)have been extensively applied to real-world tasks,such as recommendation systems,social networks,and citation *** existing HIN representation learning methods can effectively learn the semantic and structural features in the network,little awareness was given to the distribution discrepancy of subgraphs within a single ***,we find that ignoring such distribution discrepancy among subgraphs from multiple sources would hinder the effectiveness of graph embedding learning *** motivates us to propose SUMSHINE(Scalable Unsupervised Multi-Source Heterogeneous Information Network Embedding)-a scalable unsupervised framework to align the embedding distributions among multiple sources of an *** results on real-world datasets in a variety of downstream tasks validate the performance of our method over the state-of-the-art heterogeneous information network embedding algorithms.

Antiglycating effects of citrus flavonoids and associated mechanisms

Glycation of proteins and DNA forms advanced glycation end products(AGEs)causing cell and tissue dysfunction and subsequent various chronic diseases,in particular,metabolic and age-related *** AGE inhibition includes scavengers of reactive carbonyl species(RCS)such as methylglyoxal(MG),glyoxalase-1 enhancers,Nrf2/ARE pathway activators,AGE/RAGE formation inhibitors and other antiglycatng *** flavonoids have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and are also found to be effective antiglycating ***,we reviewed the up to date progress of the antiglycation effects of citrus flavonoids and associated *** citrus flavonoids,hesperedin and its aglycone,hesperetin,inhibited glycation by scavenging MG forming mono-or di-flavonoid adducts with MG,enhanced the activity of glyoxase-1,activated Akt/Nrf2 signal pathway while inhibiting AGE/RAGE/NF-κB pathway,reduced the formation of Nε-(carboxylmethyl)lysine(CML)and pentosidine,inhibited aldol reductase activity and decreased the levels of *** antiglycating activity and mechanisms of other flavonoids was also summarized in this *** conclusion,citrus flavonoids possess effective antiglycating activity via different mechanisms,yet there are many challenging questions remaining to be studied in the near future such as in vivo testing and human study of citrus flavonoids for efficacy,effectiveness and adverse effects of citrus flavonoids as a functional food in managing high levels of AGEs and controlling AGE-induced chronic diseases,diabetic complications in particular.

Carbonaceous aerosols in PM_(10) and pollution gases in winter in Beijing

An intensive observation of organic carbon （OC） and element carbon （EC） in PM10 and gaseous materials （SO2, CO, and O3,） was conducted continuously to assess the characteristics of wintertime carbonaceous aerosols in an urban area of Beijing, China. Results showed that the averaged total carbon （TC） and PM10 concentrations in observation period are 30.2±120.4 and 172.6±198.3 μ/m^3 respectively. Average OC concentration in nighttime （24.9±19.6 μ/m^3 was 40% higher than that in daytime （17.7±10.9 μ/m^3. Average EC concentrations in daytime （8.8±15.2 μ/m^3 was close to that in nighttime （8.9±15.1 μ/m^3. The OC/EC ratios in nighttime ranging from 2.4 to 2.7 are higher than that in daytime ranging from 1.9 to 2.0. The concentrations of OC, EC, PM10 were low with strong winds and high with weak winds. The OC and EC were well correlated with PM10, CO and SO2, which implies they have similar sources. OC and EC were not well correlated with O3. By considering variation of OC/EC ratios in daytime and night time, correlations between OC and O3, and meteorological condition, we speculated that OC and EC in Beijing PM10 were emitted as the primary particulate form. Emission of motor vehicle with low OC/EC ratio and coal combustion sources with high OC/EC ratio are probably the dominant sources for carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing in winter. A simple method was used to estimate the relative contribution of sources to carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing PM10. Motor vehicle source accounts for 80% and 68%, while coal combustion accounts for 20% and 32% in daytime and nighttime, respectively in Beijing. Averagely, the motor vehicle and coal combustion accounted for 74% and 26%, respectively, for carbonaceous aerosols during the observation period. It points to the motor vehicle is dominant emission for carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing PM10 in winter period, which should be paid attention to control high level of PM10 in Beijing effectively.
