Movement Patterns of the Eastern Chipmunk (<i>Tamias striatus</i>) in Four Fragmented Landscapes of Prince Edward Island, Canada

The analysis of animal movement patterns can provide important information on animals’ responses to hab.tat features. In this study, the movement paths of eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) were examined in four landscapes, with different levels of hab.tat fragmentation, using either fluorescent powdering or spool-and-line tracking. Descriptions of the tree and ground vegetation communities were performed in the vicinity of the trail to ob.ain information on hab.tat use and hab.tat selection. Several key movement variab.es were calculated, including the total path length, net distance, fractal dimension, and radius of gyration. Despite statistically significant differences in some of the movement metrics b.tween the four landscapes, the overall movement patterns were generically the same for all of chipmunk paths examined in this study. The data were compared to trends expected b.sed on random or correlated random walks, as well as Lévy-walk models. The mean squared net displacement did not support the correlated random walk predictions, except at smaller spatial scales, b.t overall demonstrated Lévy-like super diffusive b.haviour. Lévy-like patterns were also confirmed from the move-length distrib.tions that demonstrated truncated-tail power-law b.haviour. Although this would suggest invariance of the movement patterns at all spatial scales studied, fractal analysis revealed at least two transitions in movement patterns at scales of around 2 and 5 m. The transition point at 2 m was negatively correlated with the density of small trees, while the transition at ~5 m was positively correlated with the spatial distrib.tion of large trees. As the hab.tat-preference data showed that small trees are among the least preferred hab.tat component, while large trees were among the most preferred hab.tat, chipmunks are likely to alter their movement b.haviour to avoid small trees, and attracted towards large trees possib.y to avoid predators. Exploring the Effects of Land-Cover Configuration, b.dy Size and Trophic Diversity on the Avifauna Richness of Prince Edward Island, Canada

We explored the effects of land-cover configuration, b.dy size and trophic diversity in determining avian species richness on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Data on avian species richness were ob.ained from the Maritime b.eeding b.rd Atlas data. Prince Edward Island was divided into 97 sampling cells of 10 × 10 km. Land-cover metrics were calculated using a forest inventory datab.se, Fragstats and ArcView version 8.1. The relationships b.tween avian species richness and explanatory variab.es were explored using correlation analysis, mixed forward-b.ckward stepwise analysis, generalized linear models and Akaike’s information criterion. Models predicted b.tween 27% and 63% of the variab.lity in species richness, attrib.ting sub.tantial explanatory power to b.th the average b.dy size and the range of b.dy size spanned b. the avian community. The b.dy-size frequency distrib.tion showed that avian communities were dominated b. species weighing b.tween 50 and 80 g. Hab.tat metrics associated with forests were more important to the avifauna than those related to agriculture. Avian species richness also decreased with b.th the fragmentation and isolation of wetlands. The total area covered b. the human infrastructure land-cover and its sub.ivision were also important. Clearly, b.dy size plays a key role in determining the diversity of b.rds on Prince Edward Island. In particular, species weighing 50 - 80 g appear to have sufficient resources to b. successful on Prince Edward Island’s landscapes. Our findings also highlighted the importance of controlling the expansion of human infrastructure and b.th the fragmentation and reduction in size of wetlands to maintain avian species richness patterns.
