A remotely sensed tracking of forest cover and associatedtemperature change in Margalla hills

Worldwide, forest degradation is a serious environmental issue, and inPakistan, forest wealth is depleting at the highest rate in South Asia. Toensure sustainable development goals of environmental stewardship,social development and economic growth, a sound monitoring andregulatory mechanism is essential for tracking forest cover changes. Thisstudy aims to quantify the decline of forest reserves and associatedtemperature variations in a relatively unexplored biodiversity hotspot ofIslamabad, Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP). Imagery acquired byLandsat TM (Thematic Mapper) for the year 1992, 2000 and 2011 areused to assess the spatial and temporal changes occurred over the lasttwo decades (from 1992 to 2011). A robust hybrid-classification routineis implemented to monitor the changes in forest cover and ANOVAalong with Tukey’s HSD (Honestly Significant Difference) test is used totest the significance of temperature variation associated with a shift inland cover classes. The results showed a significant growth insettlements, agricultural area and barren soil whereas water body, lowervegetation, scrub and pine forest are diminishing. In both decades, thetemperature alteration associated with a change in land cover classesare statistically significant (confirmed by ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD tests)for most of the land use/land cover classes. Based on these findings, thisstudy concludes that forests are dwindling at MHNP and the degradingcondition of the forest is below par and necessitates the promotion ofconservation practices to minimize ecological disturbances.

Background:Cystic echinococcosis(CE)is a human and animal health problem in many endemic areas *** is considered a neglected zoonotic disease caused by the larval form(hydatid cyst)of Echinococcus *** are limited studies on echinococcosis in ***:A cross-sectional survey was conducted to find out recent knowledge,attitudes and practices on the occurrence of cystic echinococcosis in butchers and dog owners in both urban and rural areas of Rawalpindi/Islamabad regions,*** quantitative data was collected in the form of questionnaires to investigate the knowledge and awareness of CE among community members and their routine practices that were behind the factors involved in hydatid cyst *** practices and infrastructure of abattoirs/butcher shops and their role in transmission of cystic echinococcosis were also evaluated in the present ***:The participants involved in the study were dog owners and people who kept animals.A total of 400 people were interviewed and 289 questionnaires were *** results showed that only 4.1%of people have heard about the disease,and 58.1%were closely associated with ***-three percent of dogs in study area were consuming uncooked organs(***,lung,etc.)of slaughtered animals,while 100%of dogs at butcher shops were consuming uncooked *** slaughtering was common in 20.06%.Among butchers,32.3%had heard about zoonoses and 7.61%knew about *** statistical analysis showed that there was highly significant difference(P<0.05)among most of the practices that were associated with the prevalence of ***:It was concluded from the present study that,the knowledge and awareness of CE among people of Rawalpindi/Islamabad were *** of dogs and poor knowledge of CE among community members and butchers,the transmission of echinococcosis is ***,there is urgent need to strengthen awareness and health education among people,as well as p

AIM: The present study deals with the investigation of mechanisms involved in the synergistic interaction between epinephrine and arachidonic acid (AA). METHODS: Venous blood was taken from healthy human volunteers reported to be free of medications for one week. Platelet aggregation was monitored at 37oC using Dual-channel Lumi-aggregometer. The resulting aggregation was recorded for 5 min by the measurement of light transmission as a function of time. RESULTS: The data show that a synergism in platelet aggregation mediated by subthreshold concentrations of epinephrine (1 μmol/L) and AA (0.2 μmol/L) was inhibited by the α2-receptor antagonist (yohimbine, IC50=0.6 μmol/L) and an inhibitor of AA-cyclooxygenase (COX), indomethacin (IC50=0.25 μmol/L). In examining receptor influence on intraplatelet signalling pathways, it was found that the synergistic effect was inhibited by calcium channel blockers, verapamil (IC50=0.4 μmol/L) and diltiazem (IC50=2.5 μmol/L), as well as by low concentrations of inhibitors of phospholipase C (PLC) (U73122; IC50=0.2 μmol/L) and mitogens activated protein kinase (MAPK) (PD 98059; IC50=3.8 μmol/L). Herbimycin A, a specific inhibitor of tyrosine light chain kinase (TLCK), showed inhibition at IC50 value of 15 μmol/L, whereas chelerythrine, a protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor, had no effect up to 20 μmol/L. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that synergism between epinephrine and AA in platelet aggregation is triggered through receptors coupled to G-protein, which in turn, activate PLC, COX, and MAP kinase-signaling pathways.

AIM: To examine the signalling mechanisms involved in the synergistic interaction of 5-hydroxytryptamine （5-HT） and arachidonic acid （AA） in human platelet aggregation. METHODS: Blood was obtained from healthy human subjects, mixed with 3.8% sodium citrate （9:1）, and centrifuged to prepare platelet rich plasma （PRP）. Aggregation was monitored using a Dual-channel Lumi-aggregometer. The agonist-induced influx of Ca2+was measured using Fura-2 AM. TXA2formation was studied using radiochemical method. RESULTS: Subthreshold concentration of 5-HT （2μmol/L） potentiated the effect of low dose of AA （0.2 mmol/L） in human platelets. This synergistic effect was blocked by 5-HT2receptor antagonist (methysergide IC50=5.2 nmol/L; cyproheptadine IC50=0.6 nmol/L), and thromboxane A2receptor antagonist (SQ 29 548; IC50=30 nmol/L), showing that the effect is receptor-mediated. Aggregation was monitored at 37℃ using Dual-channel *** resulting aggregation was recorded for 5 min by the measurement of light transmission as a function of ***: Platelet aggregation mediated by subthreshold concentrations of PAF （5-8 nmol/L） plus epinephrine（0.5-2 μmol/L） was inhibited by α2-receptor blocker, yohimbine, and PAF receptor antagonist WEB 2086. This synergism was inhibited by calcium channel blockers, verapamil and diltiazem. Stratigraphy of the Alveolina elliptica group from the Middle Eocene of Iran:Calibration with calcareous nannofossils biozones and description of Alveolina ozcani n. sp.

Precise taxonomy and the chronostratigraphic calibration of the Middle Eocene Alveolina from Central Iran is here undertaken from the Chah-Talkh section of the southern Sabzevar region(Central Iran). We have identified Alveolina kieli, Alveolina stercusmuris and Alveolina nuttalli along with the new species Alveolina ozcani n. sp. that we include into the Alveolina elliptica group. We have also found Nummulites uroniensis, Nummulites obesus and Nummulites cf. verneuili and associated calcareous nannofossils that look reliable to make thoughtful correlations with the Shallow Benthic Zones(SBZ). The foraminiferal biostratigraphy suggests an assignment to the upper part of the lower Lutetian-lower part of the middle Lutetian,SBZ13(Middle Eocene), further strengthened through the identification of the calcareous nannofossil NP14b-NP15b or CNE8-CNE10 biozones, providing a solid correlation with the global stratigraphic standards.

Background: COVID-19 Pandemic is still circulating within the human population and proving to be a deadlier disease with a mortality rate ranging from 0.5% to 7%. Since COVID-19 is a highly transmissible disease;there is always a probability for its outward spread towards the general public and community from the hospitals and healthcare facilities where they come to seek treatment. Methodology: A prospective cohort study design was used, considering the limited available resources and time—a total of 200 healthcare workers (including doctors, nurses, para-medical staff, janitorial staff, reception staff & pharmacists) working in the OPDs of the two major public sector hospitals of Quetta were made part of this study. The study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique and selection was made from the daily attendance register. The study participants from “Hospital-A” were first of all educated and trained on various COVID-19 IPC measures later on various COVID-19-IEC materials;written in simple Urdu language, were displayed clearly everywhere in the OPD. Similarly, handwashing stations along with hand sanitizers/soaps and surgical face masks were also made available free of cost for all the study participants of Hospital-A. Moreover the importance and effectiveness of COVID-19 IPC measures were continuously announced in the OPD gallery of Hospital-A, these announcements used simple wording in local languages (i.e., Urdu, Pashto, Balochi and Brahvi). On the other hand, in the OPD of “Hospital-B”, no such interventions were made. The study participants of both the hospitals were followed for one month and observations like which group showed more on-job noncompliance towards various COVID-19 IPC measures were recorded.
