A Systematic Analysis of Systems Approach and Flood Risk Management Research:Trends,Gaps,and Opportunities

Flooding is a global threat,necessitating a comprehensive management *** to the complexity of managing flood hazards and risks,researchers have advocated for holistic,comprehensive,and integrated *** study,employing a systems thinking perspective,assessed global flood risk management research trends,gaps,and opportunities using132 published documents in BibTeX format.A systematic review of downloaded documents from the Scopus and Web of Science databases revealed slow progress of approximately 11.61% annual growth in applying systems thinking and its concomitant approaches to understanding global flood risk management over the past two decades compared to other fields like water resource management and business management systems.A significant gap exists in the application of systems thinking methodologies to flood risk management research between developed and developing countries,particularly in Africa,highlighting the urgency of reoriented research and policy *** application gaps of the study methodology are linked to challenges outlined in existing literature,such as issues related to technical expertise and resource *** study advocates a shift from linear to holistic approaches in flood risk management,aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2023 and the Sustainable Development *** among researchers,institutions,and countries is essential to address this global challenge effectively.

Land Use and Land Cover Dynamics in the Eseka Alluvial Gold Mining District, Centre Region, Cameroon

Local populations in Cameroon thrive on forest resources and the flow of ecosystem services they provide are pivotal in sustaining national economy, improving people’s lives, safeguarding biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of environmental changes. The exploitation of these resources invariably leads to deforestation and forest degradation. This study was designed to evaluate land use land cover change (LULCC) in the Eseka alluvial gold mining district with the aid of Landsat images. In the investigation of forest cover change, four Landsat satellite images for (1990, 2002, 2015 and 2022) were used. Ground-truthing also helped to identify the activities carried out by the local population and to determine agents, drivers and pressures of land use and land cover change. Four main land cover classes namely: forest, agricultural land, settlement/mining camps and water bodies were selected. Between 1990 and 2022, the proportion of forest decreased from 98% to 34% while those of agricultural land and settlement/mining camps increased from 2% to 60% and 0.54% to 6% respectively. Analysis showed ongoing deforestation with forest cover loss of ~98,263 ha in 32 years giving a cover change percentage of 63.94%. Kappa coefficient for the study period ranged from 0.92 to 0.99. Forest cover loss could be attributed to farming activities, wood extraction and alluvial gold mining activities. Economic motives notably the need to increase household income from a frequent demand for farm and wood products in neighbouring towns and the quest for gold were the main drivers of these activities. Hence, this study assesses the impact of human activities from the mining sector on the forest ecosystem in a bid to inform mitigation policies.

Lignin,lignosulfonate,and synthesized phosphorylated lignosulfonate were introduced as greenﬁllers in citric acid-sucrose adhesives for bonding particleboard fabricated from areca leaf sheath(ALS).The characteristics of particleboards were compared to that of ultralow emitting formaldehyde(UleF-UF).Theﬁllers derived from Eucalyptus ***-lignin were added forﬂame retardancy enhancement.10%of each lignin and modiﬁed lig-nin was added into the UleF-UF and citric acid-sucrose bonded *** applied to particle-boards included thermal characteristics,X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD),morphological properties,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),as well as physical,mechanical,andﬁre resistance characteristics of the laboratory-fabricated *** and modiﬁed lignin resulted in improved thermal stability of the composites bonded with UleF-UF while the improvement in the particleboard bonded with citric acid-sucrose was not signiﬁ*** introduction ofﬁller exerted a higher inﬂuence on the UF-bonded particleboards compared to composites fabricated with citric ***,the presence of lignin,lignosulfonate,and phosphorylated lignosulfonate enhanced the mechanical strength of the UleF-bonded particleboards,although their dimensional stability has ***,the use of lignin and lignosulfonate enhanced theﬁre resis-tance of the particleboards produced with lower observed weight *** laboratory particleboards exhibited satisfactoryﬁre resistance,attaining a V-0 rating in according to the UL-94 standard.

A gain-varying UIO approach with adaptive threshold for FDI of nonlinear F16 systems

A discrete gain-varying unknown input observer （UIO） method is presented for actuator fault detection and isolation （FDI） problems in this paper. A novel residual scheme together with a moving horizon threshold is proposed. This design methodology is applied to a nonlinear F16 system with polynomial aerodynamics coefficient expressions, where the coefficient expressions for the F16 system and UIOs may be slightly different. The simulation results illustrate that a satisfactory FDI performance can be achieved even when the F16 system is under the environment of model uncertainties, exogenous noise and measurement errors.

Dual potential of microalgae as a sustainable biofuel feedstock and animal feed

The rise in global population has led to explorations of alternative sources of energy and food. Because corn and soybean are staple food crops for humans, their common use as the main source of dietary energy and protein for food-producing animals directly competes with their allocation for human consumption. Alternatively, de-fatted marine microalgal biomass generated from the potential biofuel production may be a viable replacement of corn and soybean meal due to their high levels of protein, relatively well-balanced amino acid profiles, and rich contents of minerals and vitamins, along with unique bioactive compounds. Although the full-fatted （intact） microalgae represent the main source of omega-3 （n-3） polyunsaturated fatty acids including docohexaenoic acid （DHA） and eicosapentaenoic acid （EPA）, the de-fatted microalgal biomass may still contain good amounts of these components for enriching DHA/EPA in eggs, meats, and milk. This review is written to highlight the necessity and potential of using the de-fatted microalgal biomass as a new generation of animal feed in helping address the globa energy, food, and environmental issues. Nutritional feasibility and limitation of the biomass as the new feed ingredient for simple-stomached species are elaborated. Potential applications of the biomass for generating value-added animal products are also explored.

Comparison of Loaded Countermovement Jump with Different Variable Resistance Intensities on Inducing Post-Activation Potentiation

Purpose The aim of the study was to establish the optimum variable resistance(VR)intensity for loaded countermovement jump(LCMJ)to induce post-activation potentiation(PAP).Methods Eleven male athletes(age 23±2.3 years,height 1.77±0.05 m,body mass 73.7±9.0 kg)attended one familiariza-tion and four testing *** performed their own pre-competition warm up before performing two countermove-ment jumps(CMJ)for baseline ***,they performed 2×3 unloaded(UCMJ)or loaded CMJ(LCMJ)with one of the three VR intensities,Orange(6.7±0.6 kg),Red(14.0±0.9 kg)and Blue(24.0±1.4 kg),in random order,before performing two more CMJ for post-test *** testing session was separated by at least 48 *** There was significant increase in jump height in all conditions(P0.05).There were small to moderate effect when comparing Orange and the other *** force and velocity increased in Red(Plevel of about 10%body weight contributed by VR seems to be the optimum resistance level.

Effects of intermittent sprint and plyometric training on endurance running performance

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of intermittent sprint training and plyometric training on endurance running ***:Fourteen moderately trained male endurance runners were allocated into either the intermittent sprint training group(n = 7)or the plyometric training group(n = 7).The preliminary tests required subjects to perform a treadmill graded exercise test,a countermovement jump test for peak power measurement,and a 10-km time *** included 12 sessions of either intermittent sprint or plyometric training carried out twice per *** completion of the intervention,post-tests were ***:Both groups showed significant reduction in weekly training mileage from pre-intervention during the intervention *** were significant improvements in the 10-km time trial performance and peak *** was also significant improvement in relative peak power for both *** 10-km time trial performance and relative peak power showed a moderate inverse ***:These findings showed that both intermittent sprint and plyometric training resulted in improved 10-km running performance despite reduction in training *** improvement in running performance was accompanied by an improvement in peak power and showed an inverse relationship with relative peak power.

Development of a vision-based ground target detection and tracking system for a small unmanned helicopter

It is undoubted that the latest trend in the unmanned aerial vehicles （UAVs） community is towards vision-based unmanned small-scale helicopter, utilizing the maneuvering capabilities of the helicopter and the rich information of visual sensors, in order to arrive at a versatile platform for a variety of applications such as navigation, surveillance, tracking, etc. In this paper, we present the development of a vision-based ground target detection and tracking system for a small UAV helicopter. More specifically, we propose a real-time vision algorithm, based on moment invariants and two-stage pattern recognition, to achieve automatic ground target detection. In the proposed algorithm, the key geometry features of the target are extracted to detect and identify the target. Simultaneously, a Kalman filter is used to estimate and predict the position of the target, referred to as dynamic features, based on its motion model. These dynamic features are then combined with geometry features to identify the target in the second-stage of pattern recognition, when geometry features of the target change significantly due to noise and disturbance in the environment. Once the target is identified, an automatic control scheme is utilized to control the pan/tilt visual mechanism mounted on the helicopter such that the identified target is to be tracked at the center of the captured images. Experimental results based on images captured by the small-scale unmanned helicopter, sheLion, in actual flight tests demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the overall system.
