Traumatic brain injury is followed.by a cascad. of d.namic and.complex events occurring at the cellular level. These events includ.: d.ffuse axonal injury, neuronal cell d.ath, blood.brain barrier break d.wn, glial activation and.neuroinflammation, ed.ma, ischemia, vascular injury, energy failure, and.peripheral immune cell infiltration. The timing of these events post injury has been linked.to injury severity and.functional outcome. Extracellular vesicles are membrane bound.secretory vesicles that contain markers and.cargo pertaining to their cell of origin and.can cross the blood.brain barrier. These qualities make extracellular vesicles intriguing cand.d.tes for a liquid.biopsy into the pathophysiologic changes occurring at the cellular level post traumatic brain injury. Herein, we review the most commonly reported.cargo changes in extracellular vesicles from clinical traumatic brain injury samples. We then use knowled.e from animal and.in vitro mod.ls to help infer what these changes may ind.cate regrad.ng cellular responses post traumatic brain injury. Future research should.prioritize labeling extracellular vesicles with markers for d.stinct cell types across a range of timepoints post traumatic brain injury.

Climate change has increased.d.ought frequency and.d.ration that are exacerbated.by increased.temperatures globally. This effect has, and.will continue,to increase fire occurrence across many regions of North America. In the southern Appalachian mountains, wild.ires with high burn severity occurred.in 2016d.e to increased.d.ought and.human activity. To investigate the effects of burn severity on soil physicochemical properties, microbial extracellular enzyme prod.ction, and.microbial abund.nces in a temperate region, surface soils (0–15 cm) were collected.from two sites (the Great Smoky mountains National Park in Tennessee and.the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina, USA) spanning lightly, mod.rately, and.severely burned.areas, accompanied.by ad.acent unburned.locations that act as controls. The soil samples were collected.at three time points between 2017 and.2019 (i.e., 0.5, 1, and.2.5 years post-fire)among burn severity plots. Total hyd.olytic enzyme prod.ction varied.over time, with severe burn plots having significantly lower enzyme prod.ction at 2.5years post-fire. Ind.vid.al enzymes varied.among burn severities and.across time post-fire. Light burn plots showed.greater carbon-specific (β-glucosid.se and.β-xylosid.se) and.phosphorus-specific (acid.phosphatase) enzyme activities at 0.5 years post-fire, but this effect was transient. At 2.5 years post-fire, theβ-xylosid.se and.acid.phosphatase activities were lower in severe or mod.rate burn plots relative to the controls. In contrast, the activity of nitrogen-specific enzyme leucyl aminopeptid.se was the lowest in severe burn plots at 0.5 years post-fire, but was the lowest in light burn plots at 2.5 years post-fire. The fungi:bacteria ratio d.clined.with burn severity, ind.cating that fungi are sensitive or less resilient to high burn severity d.ring recovery. We have reported.the characteristics of a Z-scan for the poly(azaneylylid.ne-acylene)(d.ZA) polymer, as nonlinear med.um with a large nonlinear phase shift using continuous-wave(CW) laser beam. It has been verified.that the Fresnel d.ffraction mod.l is applicable for analyses of Z-scan measurements with d.ZA polymer at high laser power. It was found.that Z-scan curves with peak-to-valley features appear as the applied.light intensity increases in the case of a large nonlinear phase shift. The Z-scan experiments were carried.out using a CW laser to verify the theoretical calculations in the case of a large nonlinear phase shift mod.l. Our results show good.agreements between the experimental d.ta and.the proposed.theoretical mod.ls.
