Investigation on surface integrity of electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4 V by precision grinding and electropolishing

Electron beam melting(EBM),as an excellent Additive Manufacturing(AM)technology,enables the printing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for a wide range of applications such as aerospace and biomechanical *** improves functionality and integrity of components and negates complexities in assembly ***,due to the poor surface and sub-surface integrity represented by the rough surface finish and low dimensional accuracy,achieving a favorable surface condition is quite ***,post processing becomes essential for these electron beam melted(EBM-ed)Ti-6Al-4V *** the most common technique to improve such parts,milling of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is very challenging and resulting tool wear issues,due to its unique material ***,this paper presents a comprehensive study on the surface integrity of EBM-ed Ti-6Al-4V parts processed by precision grinding and electropolishing,aiming to qualitatively and quantitatively clarify the interrelation between process parameters and processed surface *** surface and subsurface characteristics such as profile accuracy,surface roughness,microstructure,defective layer and residual stress before and after post processing were compared and *** results show that by precision grinding,the profile accuracy was improved from over 300μm PV to 7μm PV,while surface roughness(R_(a))was reduced from 30μm to about 2μ*** layer with partially melt particles was removed,but introduced a deformed subsurface layer with more residual *** by applying electropolishing,the residual stress was released and the deformed layer was *** addition,Ra was further reduced to 0.65μ*** research can serve as a reference for the integration of post machining processes with AM.

Ending Poverty Through Ubuntu

A study conducted in 2011 showed that the "rural poverty rates in Zambia have remained very high, at 80%, over the past decade and a half, whilst urban poverty rates have declined, from 49% in 1991 to 34% in 2006". This is from a population of approximately 15, 580,199. Specific accelerators are therefore required in the form of policy changes and targeted rural investments if Zambia is to achieve the target of reducing poverty levels by half in 2015. Extreme poverty in Zambia is concentrated in rural areas. Rural poverty is due to limited access to physical and social infrastructures, such as roads, electricity, and medical facilities, which impede development. In the quest to achieve the millennium development goals, the 6th national development plan for the Zambian government which has a theme "sustained economic growth and poverty reduction" was developed offering objectives, strategies, and programs driving towards the achievement of the MDG"s. The objectives indicated therein are: (1) Infrastructure development; (2) Economic growth and diversification; (3) Rural investment and poverty reduction; and (4) Enhance human development. It is in the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP) that the government indicates objectives, strategies, and programmes targeted at improving the welfare of the Persons With Disability (PWD) under the heading "Disability and Development". However, a number of barriers will need to be overcome if Zambia is to be free from poverty especially rural poverty and most of all among persons with disabilities. When Holy Family Centre (HFC) started offering Community Based Rehabilitation services in various targeted communities in line with World Health Organization guidelines the HFC, realised the differences in the social economic situation of people in rural areas as contrasted to those in the urban centres, which was even more pronounced among Persons with Disabilities. Hemoglobin Adducts as Biomarkers of Exposure to and metabolic Activation of Carcinogenic Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines

The carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-l-(3-pyridyl)-l-butanone (NNK) form hemoglobin adducts in laboratory animals and humans. These adducts release 4-hydroxy-l-(3-pyridyl)-l-butanone (HPB) upon mild base hydrolysis. HPB released from human hemoglobin can be quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It is the only available biochemical marker for determination of exposure to, and metabolic activation of, carcinogens present only in tobacco. Levels of HPB were highest in snuff-dippers, followed by smokers and nonsmokers. Large interindividual variations in adduct levels were observed. The relationship between HPB levels in globin and DNA of rats treated with NNK has been investigated in order to aid in interpretation of the data from humans. These studies have provided the initial database for understanding the metabolic activation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines in humans.

Pore pressure prediction in offshore Niger delta using data-driven approach: Implications on drilling and reservoir quality

Despite exploration and production success in Niger Delta,several failed wells have been encountered due to ***,it is very essential to understand the spatial distribution of pore pressure and the generating mechanisms in order to mitigate the pitfalls that might arise during *** research provides estimates of pore pressure along three offshore wells using the Eaton's transit time method,multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network(MLP-ANN)and random forest regression(RFR)*** results show that there are three pressure magnitude regimes:normal pressure zone(hydrostatic pressure),transition pressure zone(slightly above hydrostatic pressure),and over pressured zone(significantly above hydrostatic pressure).The top of the geopressured zone(2873 mbRT or 9425.853 ft)averagely marks the onset of overpressurization with the excess pore pressure above hydrostatic pressure(P∗)varying averagely along the three wells between 1.06−24.75 *** results from the three methods are self-consistent with strong correlation between the Eaton's method and the two machine learning *** models have high accuracy of about>97%,low mean absolute percentage error(MAPE0.98).Our results have also shown that the principal generating mechanisms responsible for high pore pressure in the offshore Niger Delta are disequilibrium compaction,unloading(fluid expansion)and shale diagenesis.

IGF-1R as an anti-cancer target—trials and tribulations

Type I insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-1R) has long been recognized for its role in tumorigenesis and growth, but only recently have the tools for targeting the IGF pathway become available. More than 10 IGF/IGF-1R inhibitors have entered clinical trials, and these belong to three main classes: (1) monoclonal antibodies against IGF-1R, (2) monoclonal antibodies against IGF-1R ligands (IGF-1 and IGF- 2), and (3) IGF-1R tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These IGF-1R-targeting agents share common effects on IGF-1R signaling but differ in mechanisms of action, spectrum of target inhibition, and pharmacological features. Clinical activity of IGF-1R inhibitors has been demonstrated with sustained responses in a small number of patients with select tumor types, such as Ewing sarcoma and thymoma. However, many large clinical trials involving patients with adult tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer, failed to show clinical benefit in the overall patient population. Possible reasons for failure include the complexity of the IGF-1R/insulin receptor system and parallel growth and survival pathways, as well as a lack of patient selection markers. While IGF-1R remains a valid target for selected tumor types, identification of predictive markers and rational combinations will be critical to success in future development.
