The present study investigated the potential probiotic effect of Enterococcus faecalis against a pathogenic microorganism,Vibrio harveyi occurring in the giant freshwater prawn(Macrobrachium rosenbergii).*** was isolated from the intestine of *** through biochemical tests and PCR-based molecular *** in-vitro challenge was conducted by mixing isolated probiotic(5.12 log CFU/g)and ***(3.09 log CFU/g).Feeds incorporated with ***(9.02 log CFU/g)were applied to the treatment group during in vivo test in the aquarium and earthen pond(70 m^(2),1 m depth).Pathogenic bacteria were found to be reduced after 8 h(from 5.02 to 3.62 log CFU/g)and 60 days(from 5.44 to 2.15 log CFU/g)of probiotic administration in the in vitro and in vivo test,*** *** mixed feed also showed higher weight gain(WG%,481.22%±17.71%;SGR%,2.93%±0.18%)and digestive enzymes activities(amylase,1.26±0.08 unit/mg;protease,2.78±0.02 unit/mg)compared to control group(WG%,371.31%±13.35%;SGR%,2.30%±0.32%;amylase,0.7±0.03 unit/mg;protease,1.82±0.02 unit/mg).Furthermore,the probiotic also improved the immune response by augmenting NGH(from 73.33%±0.23%to 74.63%±0.11%)and SGH(from 22.24%±0.06%to 23.13%±0.08%)in the treatment ***,*** could be recommended to use against bacterial infections of the ***.

Objective: To evaluate the ameliorating effects of Raphanus sativus leaves(RSL)against sodium arsenite(Sa)-induced adverse effects through mice ***: Swiss albino mice were divided into four equal groups: control, Sa, RSL,RSL + Sa. Sa(10 mg/kg body weight/day), and powder form of RSL(50 mg/kg body weight/day) were provided as food supplement orallty. Blood indices were measured using commercially available kits through colorimetric ***: It was observed that lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase activities were significantly(P < 0.05)higher in Sa-treated mice than those in the control group. RSL significantly reduced Sainduced elevation of the activities of these enzymes in serum significantly(P < 0.05).Serum butyrylcholinesterase activity and high density lipoproteins cholesterol levels in Satreated mice were significantly(P < 0.05) lower than the control group, and the food supplementation of RSL could significantly(P < 0.05) prevent the reduction of Sa-mediated serum butyryl cholinesterase activity and high density lipoproteins cholesterol levels. RSL could also reduce the Sa-induced elevation of serum urea level significantly(P < 0.05).Conclusions: Results of this study suggest the protective or ameliorating effects of RSL on Sa-induced perturbation of blood indices are related to the hepatic, cardiovascular and kidney dysfunction. Therefore, RSL may be useful to reduce arsenic toxicity in human in the future.

Role of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Treatment of Cervical Cancer: A Case Series of Thirty-Eight Patients Treated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy of women in Bangladesh. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment of patients with early invasive cancer confined to cervix. While the five-year survival rate after surgery for stage IB1 disease exceeds 90%, it is only 60% - 70% for stage IB2 and IIA2 (tumor size > 4 cm). To improve the outcome of treatment, two to three cycles of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT) has been evaluated as a treatment strategy in stage IB2 and IIA2 diseases. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by Radical Surgery (RS) among the patients with early bulky cervical cancer (Stage IB2 & IIA2) to reduce the tumor size to achieve radical resectibility. Methods: This study was carried out at the Gynaecological Oncology Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) during the period July 2015 to December 2015. Thirty-eight patients with early bulky cervical cancer without any prior medical or surgical treatment received NACT using intravenous paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 and cisplatin 75 mg/m2 followed by radical surgery. The primary outcome measure assessed the response to NACT to reduce the size of the tumor. Secondary outcome measures assessed the resectibility of tumor and compared the preoperative clinical stage to the postoperative pathological stage. This study also assessed the relationship of intraoperative and postoperative complications including the adverse effects of postoperative radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. Results: Clinical response to NACT was 94.7% (84.2% complete response + 10.5% partial response). Progressive disease was found in two cases (5.3%). Duration of surgery was less than 2 hours in 81.6% cases and greater than 3 hours in 13.2% cases only. All women lived 5 to 10 hours away from Dhaka and could not return for in person follow-up. Determine the Factors of Female Early Age at First Cohabitation: A Case Study of Bangladesh

The main objective of the current study is to examine the existing situation of female early age at first cohabitation in Bangladesh as well as to identify the factors associated behind this issue. An analysis has been performed by using the secondary data of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS), 2011. Chi-square test for dependency checking has been performed as bivariate analysis. After performing bivariate analysis, binary logistic regression analysis has been performed. To identify the significant variable, stepwise regression method has also been performed. The result of the study has revealed that women education, household economic status, area of residence, religion and geographical location have significant contribution for adolescent cohabitation. From this study it can be concluded that females who has low education and low socio-economic status are more likely to enter into cohabitation at early adulthood.

Background: Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in supporting the immune system, helping to reduce the risk of infections and certain autoimmune diseases. Adequate vitamin D levels may be associated with a reduced risk of certain health conditions like pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and postpartum depression. Brittle bones, osteoporosis in the elderly, and osteomalacia in young children are all symptoms of vitamin D insufficiency. Additionally, it contributes to problems linked to gum disease, including an increase in dental cavities, alveolar bone loss around the teeth, and other problems. It could lead to depression, tiredness, and a loss of appetite. In this study, urban children and adolescents in Dhaka city, Bangladesh are examined for vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency. Methods: The Study was a cross-sectional study conducted under Dhaka National Medical College and Hospital, Dhaka and additionally included two other health centers Medinova Medical Services and Monoara General Hospital Service Golap bag, Dhaka from October 2020 to November 2021. The study location was at the 3 (Three) different hospitals which was located in Dhaka City. In this cross-sectional study, Participants will be selected purposively and conveniently based on the age categories from 0 - 19 years of age at the outdoor department of the hospital. The study included the secondary dataset of ambulatory individuals who came to the 3 (three) hospitals, randomly to evaluate serum vitamin D levels on referral from a general out-patient-department (OPD). They were examined for laboratory findings of serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels to determine vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency among children and adolescent groups of both male and female Sex. Results: A total of 6394 individuals with a diverse age group were statistically examined for laboratory findings of serum vitamin D levels. Detecting Concentration of Analytes with DETECHIP: A Molecular Sensing Array

DETECHIP is a detection system made of various sensors that has been shown to detect and discriminate between small molecules of interest, including various illicit and over-the-counter drugs. Previously, detection was normalized to a single concentration of analyte. Now this detection assay can detect concentration differences in analytes via red, green, and blue color value changes and shifts in the UV-Vis spectra of the assay. To determine the concentrations differences, the exposed assays were scanned on a flatbed scanner and the images were analyzed for individual RGB values with a custom macro in ImageJ, an image analysis program. Increasing concentrations of the analyte resulted in greater differences in color values between control and analyte wells. These differences showed a linear relationship to concentration change, some with correlation coefficients greater than 98%. This work expands the capability of DETECHIP to give information about the concentration of analyte when the analyte identity is known.

Risk Factor Assessment of Coal Mine Drainage Water on Surrounding Agricultural Soil: A Case Study at Barapukuria in Bangladesh

This study is performed to know the contamination level of heavy metals on the surrounding agricultural soils at the site of Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Limited (BCMCL). Total concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cu, As, Cd, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Mn) were measured in that soil. To calculate the contamination level, the enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and Hakanson potential ecological risk index were done. Igeo values indicated that the study areas at all stations were suffering from moderate contamination with As. The results of enrichment factor revealed that soils in all stations were in extremely high enrichment condition by As metal. Under Hakanson potential ecological risk index, the contamination coefficient () and potential ecological risk index () were calculated. The degree of contamination at BCMCL area reflects moderate contamination. By considering the ecological risk index of a particular heavy metal, the order is as follows: Cd > As > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Zn and Cd has the highest risk index and poses the greatest damage to the BCMCL area’s soil. EF, Igeo values and potential ecological risk index indicate that there is considerable As and Cd pollution, mainly caused by coal mine drainage water.

Molecular Diversity Analysis of Some Chilli (<i>Capsicum</i>spp.) Genotypes Using SSR Markers

Chilli belongs to the genus Capsicum which possesses enormous wealth of genetic diversity. Extent of genetic diversity determines the success level of crop improvement programme. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are the most widely used marker system for molecular diversity analysis especially in cultivated species. The aim of our present study was to assess the molecular genetic diversity of 20 local chilli genotypes of Bangladesh using SSR markers. Genomic DNA was extracted from young leaves and PCR reactions were performed. Eleven SSR primers were used in PCR amplification. Total 10 alleles were detected for the five polymorphic SSR loci, with a mean of 2.00 alleles per primer. Gene diversity ranged from 0.333 to 1.00 with an average of 0.567. Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) values of the SSR primers ranged from 0.255 to 0.500 with an average value of 0.371. The similarity index matrix ranged from 0.00 to 1.000. It was highest in several germplasms viz. Pop-2 vs Pop-18;Pop-3 vs Pop-5 vs Pop-19 vs Pop-20 and the lowest in the germplasm Pop-8 vs Pop-18. Dendrogram based on Nei’s genetic distance using Unweighted Pair Group Method of Arithmetic Means (UPGMA) indicated the segregation of 20 chilli genotypes into two main clusters. The SSR markers showed genetic variability in the studied pepper genotypes and they are powerful tools for estimating molecular diversity of chilli. The findings of the present study have potential applications in future breeding programme for the genetic improvement of chilli.

Determination of Chikungunya Virus RNA by Reverse Transcription Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) Assay

As a matter of fact, infectious diseases hamper everyone’s life and produce a lifelong threat to everyone neutral of age, sex, lifestyle and socio-economic status. Nowadays, come into the sight of Chikungunya viral (CHIKV) infection injured many Asian and African countries, also deliberated threat in rising countries and also low socio-economic countries. CHIKV is a positive-sense, enveloped single-stranded, RNA virus belonging to the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae. As the Dengue & Chikungunya viruses are spread simultaneously at the same time, so it is tough to identify them. In our resource-limited countries, swift detection of CHIKV by RT-LAMP is the simplest molecular technique in low-equipment settings without the use of any expensive decoration. Heat-treated centrifuged and uncentrifuged samples were used in this study and they showed the same result (100%). Different instruments like heat block, water bath, conventional thermal cycler & real-time thermal cycler were used to amplify the CHIKV RNA and they indicated that 100% samples were identified by all four instruments. The amplified products were visualized by turbidity test, color change by HNB, step-ladder band pattern in agarose gel electrophoresis and amplification curve in real-time thermal cycler naked eye, here the results also showed 100% samples were determined by all visualized methods. Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) is a recent technique for amplifying RNA under limited temperature, with high tangibility, quickness and competency. To identify the CHIKV RNA Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification was fabricated and validated, and the results were also compared with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The sensitivity was 95.71% and specificity was 100%, these results indicate that RT-LAMP is a feasible method for quick detection of CHIKV RNA.

Quality and Pharmaceutical Equivalence Determinations of Commercially Available Amlodipine Besylate Immediate Release Tablets

Counterfeit and substandard drugs possess serious health risks. Regular quality screening is very important to ensure the standard and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. The study aimed to compare the quality of amlodipine besylate tablets available in the Bangladesh drug market and examine their physical and pharmaceutical equivalence. The various physico-chemical parameters such as diameter, shape, size, weight variation, thickness, hardness, loss on drying (LOD), friability, disintegration, dissolution, and assay have been determined according to the methods mentioned in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and British Pharmacopoeia (BP). Four brands of amlodipine besylate were purchased from different local retail stores and coded as ALT1, AMT2, AMT3, and AST4 on the basis of their market share. All four brands met official USP specifications. Pharmaceutical equivalence was determined from the dissolution profile which gives acceptable difference (f1) and similarity (f2) factor values for all the brands compared with the benchmark brand for its highest market share. All the brands also met the USP criteria for assay of not less than 90.0% and not more than 110.0% of the labeled amount of amlodipine (C20H25N2O5Cl).
