In this paper we report an experimental investigation on the observation of surface plasmon resonance at the metal- dielectric interface of silver coated tapered light guiding glass rods of different dimensions. Chemical deposition technique has been used for metallic deposition of silver on the Tapered glass rod. Angular interrogation in Kretschmann- like configuration of this non-planar (cylindrical) structure is used to locate the resonance dip in the reflectance mea- surement. Fabrication simplicity, in addition to the inherent advantage of using different types of tapered structures, makes this study important in the development of nanoplasmonics. The experimental study is accompanied by some interesting results.

Cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal abnormalities in Sri Lankan children

Background: Cytogenetic analysis is a valuable investigation in the diagnostic work up of children with suspected chromosomal disorders. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of various types of chromosomal abnormalities in Sri Lankan children undergoing cytogenetic analysis. Methods: Cytogenetic reports of 1554 consecutive children with suspected chromosomal disorders who underwent karyotyping in two genetic centers in Sri Lanka from January 2006 to December 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: A total of 1548 children were successfully karyotyped. Abnormal karyotypes were found in 783 (50.6%) children. Numerical and structural abnormalities accounted for 90.8% and 9.2%, respectively. Down syndrome was the commonest aneuploidy identifi ed. Other various autosomal and sex chromosomal aneuploidies as well as micro-deletion syndromes were also detected. Conclusions: The prevalence of chromosomal abnormalities in Sri Lankan children undergoing cytogenetic analysis for suspected chromosomal disorders was relatively higher than that in Caucasian and other Asian populations.

Effect of Different Mulch Paper on Growth and Yield of Different High Value Vegetables in Bangladesh

The study was undertaken to identify the suitable mulch paper for different high-value vegetables during the winter season of November 2019 to March 2020 at the Olericulture research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The study was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Four vegetable varieties viz., tomato, brinjal, capsicum and broccoli and 3 mulch treatments viz., T1 = Silver over black mulch;T2 = Black mulch;T3 = No mulch were included in this study. Different vegetables responded differently with the changes of mulches irrespective of different characters. it was clear that fruit number, average fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter were strongly related to soil moisture content. The effect of different plastic mulches on fruit weight per plant and yield (t/ha) was significant. Mulching produced higher fruit yield per plant and fruit yield per hectare than for the control, indicating that the mulch had a positive effect in generating increased fruit yield. Silver over black plastic mulch produced the highest fruit yield viz., 98.05 t/ha (tomato), 54.11 t/ha (brinjal), 34.33 t/ha (capsicum), 26.09 t/ha (broccoli) followed by black and no mulches, while the control plot produced the lowest fruit yield.

Prolonged Production of L-DOPA Using Immobilized Aspergillus Terreus

The objective of this study is to improve the production of L-DOPA from fungal source like Aspergillus terreus that can be further used to large-scale commercial production of this important drug from microbial sources. L-DOPA, a dopamine precursor that can pass the blood-brain barrier, is presently the drug of choice for Parkinson＇s disease. Microbial production and isolation of L-DOPA from natural sources is yet to be achieved an economical process. In this study, the mycelial pellets ofAspergillus terreus 104 were entrapped in 2% calcium alginate and were studied for their capacity for L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine production. Results showed that the immobilized pellets produced L-DOPA to the extent of 0.74 mg·G^-1 biomass while the free pellets produced 0.8 mg·G^-1 biomass. Further, storage of immobilized pellets for 96 h at 4 ℃ resulted in the reduction of the original L-DOPA producing activity of the gel beads only 40% and that of free pellets lost completely. In order to improve the production yield, further experiments were designed. It was found that L-DOPA production could be prolonged with repeated batch wise use of immobilized mycelial pellets in calcium alginate retaining 80% of their L-DOPA producing capacity for a period of 72 h while free pellets lost completely within 24 h. Results of this kind therefore is interesting and promising for commercial scale production of L-DOPA from microbial sources.

The USA is currently going through an opioid crisis, associated with tremendous economic and societal impacts. In response to this crisis, healthcare professionals are looking for alternative pain management methods, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a sensible choice because of their effectiveness after surgical procedures. However, before surgeons start prescribing NSAIDs in place of opioids, it is crucial to first understand their potential post-surgical complications. The goal of this review is to summarize the data obtained through both animal and human studies, which suggest how a dramatic increase in NSAID use may affect these post-surgical complications. We first provide a short review outlining the mechanisms of action of NSAIDs, followed by a summary of animal studies, which show a trend towards the negative effects of NSAIDs on wound healing and an association between NSAID use and wound infections. Lastly, we present evidence from human studies on the association of NSAIDs with the following complications:anastomotic leaks, necrotizing soft tissue infections, bleeding complications, orthopedic injuries, wound healing, and cancer care. The human studies are much more variable in their conclusions as to whether NSAIDs are beneficial or not, with the only strong evidence showing that NSAIDs inhibit bone healing. This may partially be explained by male and female differences in response to NSAIDs as many animal studies showing the inhibitory effects of NSAIDs were performed on females, while al the human studies were performed with both sexes. We conclude that strong caution should be used in the prescription of NSAIDs, especially in female patients, but larger scale studies are warranted before solid recommendations can be made.

Alkaline earth stannates have renewed attention as potential materials for gas sensing, transparent conducting oxides and ceramic capacitor applications. A noble wet chemical route is chosen to synthesize BaSnO3 powders having micron size grains. Problems related to uneven grains and poor densification in conventional solid state route have been overcome in the present method. X-ray diffraction data confirms the single phase formation without any secondary phase having cubic perovskite structure (S.G. Pm-3m). The estimated lattice parameter is ≈4.11933Åand percentage density is ≈90%. The microstructure probed by scanning electron micrograph reveals almost homogeneously distributed particles having random shape with some porosity. Phonon modes in FT-IR and Raman spectra confirm the local symmetry distortion. The DC conductivity at 200°C approaches almost 2 × 10-2 (Ω-cm)-1, which is almost of the same order as that observed in perovskite based electronic conductors. DC and a.c. electrical conductivity of the material follow Mott’s variable range hopping at low temperature and Arrhenius type thermally activated process at elevated temperatures. Evidence of small polar on formation is also verified. Optical band gap estimated from absorption data is ≈2.94 very close to the reported value. Composition prepared through the noble wet chemical route has high electrical conduction and suitable for gas sensing applications.

Melanoma is a malignant tumor and is commonly found second least in the head and neck region, with approximately 10% - 25% of melanomas followed by ear (8% - 11%). We reported a case of sino-nasal malignant melanoma in a 46-year-old Asian lady who presented with epistaxis and dysphagia. By nasoendoscopy and CT scan imaging, the diagnosis of sino-nasal malignant melanoma was later confirmed by histopathology examination along with immunohistochemistry by using Melan A and S100. Malignant melanoma in the head and neck is rare and has a poor prognosis. There has been an increase in the incidence of 5% per year and mortality at 2% per year. This dictates malignant melanoma has rapidly increased compared to any other cancer except lung cancer in women and has contributed to the third highest number of deaths among all cancers. The mortality rate has also increased, and that is attributed to the negligence of symptoms during the initial period. This usually leads to patients seeking consultation during the advanced stage of the disease. In conclusion, this paper is to report that malignant melanoma may be one of the differentials of sino-nasal masses, and it may mimic nasopharyngeal carcinoma in its presentation.

AIM:To analyze the consistency of a potential involvement of the bacterium infection in the asthma disease. METHODS:A systematic literature search of the terms "Helicobacter pylori "(H. pylori) associated to "asthma" using PubM ed,Scopus and the Cochrane Library Central was performed. Reference lists from published articles were also employed. Titles of these publications and their abstracts were scanned in order to eliminate duplicates and irrelevant articles. The criteria of inclusion of the studies were:Original studies; the H. pylori diagnostic method has been declared; all ranges of age have been included in our study; a definitive diagnosis of asthma has been ***:We selected 14 articles in which the association between the two conditions was addressed. In 7 studies the prevalence of H. pylori infection in the asthma population and in the control population was made explicit. There was heterogeneity between the studies(Cohran's Q = 0.02). The H. pylori infection in the asthma population resulted 33.6%(518 of 1542),while in the control population resulted 37.6%(2746 of 7310)(relative risk of H. pylori infection in the asthma population = 0.87,95%CI:0.72-1.05,P = 0.015,random effects model). Instead,considering the morevirulent strains,the majority of studies showed an inverse relationship between the prevalence of H. pylori infection and ***:In our meta-analysis the prevalence of H. pylori infection in the asthma population resulted not statistically significant lower than in control population(P = 0.15). Instead,considering the more virulent strains,the majority of studies showed an inverse relationship between the prevalence of H. pylori infection and asthma.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease with unclear pathogenesis. Currently, there are no disease-modifying neuron-protecting drugs to slow down the neuronal degeneration. Mutations in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) cause genetic forms of PD and contribute to sporadic PD as well. Disruption of LRRK2 kinase functions has become one of the potential mechanisms underlying disease-linked mutation-induced neuronal degeneration. To further characterize the pharmacological effects of a reported LRRK2 kinase inhibitor, LDN-73794, in vitro cell models and a LRRK2 Drosophila PD model were used. LDN-73794 reduced LRRK2 kinase activity in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, LDN-73794 increased survival, improved locomotor activity, and suppressed DA neuron loss in LRRK2 transgenic flies. These results suggest that inhibition of LRRK2 kinase activity can be a potential therapeutic strategy for PD intervention and LDN-73794 could be a potential lead compound for developing neuroprotective therapeutics.
