Background: The EVIDENCE (Evidence of Interferon Dose-Response: European Nort h Am.rican Com.arative Efficacy) Study dem.nstrated that patients with m.ltiple sclerosis (m.) who initiate interferon beta-1a therapy with 44 μg 3 tim.s week ly (TIW) were less likely to have a relapse or activity on m.gnetic resonance im.aging (m.I) com.ared with those who initiate therapy at a dosage of 30 μg 1 tim.e weekly (QW). Objective: To determ.ne the effect of changing the dosage from.30 μg QW to 44 μg TIW in this extension of the EVIDENCE Study. Design/Patients: Patients with relapsing m. originally random.zed to interferon beta-1a, 30 μg QW, during the com.arative phase of the study changed to 44 μg TIW, whereas pat ients originally random.zed to 44 μg TIW continued that regim.n. Patients were followed up, on average, for an additional 32 weeks. m.in Outcom. m.asure: The w ithin-patient pretransition to posttransition change in relapse rate. Results: At the transition visit, 223 (73%) of 306 patients receiving 30 μg QW converte d to 44 μg TIW, and 272 (91%) of 299 receiving 44-μg TIW continued the sam. therapy. The posttransition annualized relapse rate decreased from.0.64 to 0.32 for patients increasing the dose (P m.0.46 to 0.34 for patients c ontinuing 44-μg TIW (P=.03). The change was greater in those increasing dose a nd frequency (P=.047). Patients converting to the 44-μg TIW regim.n had fewer active lesions on T2-weighted m.I com.ared with before the transition (P=.02), whereas those continuing the 44-μg TIW regim.n had no significant change in T2 active lesions. Patients who converted to high-dose/high-frequency interferon beta-1a therapy had increased rates of adverse events and treatm.nt term.natio ns consistent with the initiation of high-dose subcutaneous interferon therapy. Conclusions: Patients receiving interferon beta-1a im.roved on clinical and m. I disease m.asures when they changed from.30 μg QW to 44 μg TIW.

Influence of alkaline treatm.nt and fiber loading on the physical and m.chanical properties of kenaf/polypropylene com.osites for variety of applications

Due to current trend and increasing interest towards natural based fiber products, Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus)fibers have been used for the developm.nts of m.ny products. Therefore, Kenaf fiber-reinforced com.osites have been widely used in engineering and industrial applications. The present work deals with the fabricating and characterization of untreated and treated kenaf/polypropylene(PP)-reinforced com.osites. Com.osites of PP reinforced with treated and untreated kenaf fibers were fabricated using the injection m.lding *** fiber loadings of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt% treated and untreated kenaf com.osites were also prepared. Xray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron m.croscopy(SEm., Fourier transform.infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy and therm. gravim.tric analysis(TGA) were perform.d on the treated, untreated kenaf fibers and kenaf/PP com.osites. m.reover, the alkaline-treated kenaf com.osites exhibit better physical, m.rphological, and m.chanical properties because of the com.atibility of kenaf with PP. However, variations in tensile and flexural properties depend on treatm.nt and kenaf fiber contents. The percentage increase in the m.chanical properties of the treated kenaf/PP com.osites relative to that of PP was also m.asured. In addition, 40 wt%kenaf fiber loading resulted in higher m.chanical properties. By contrast, kenaf/PP com.osite with 50% fiber loading was not successfully prepared because of im.roper m.xing and the burning of kenaf fibers in the PP m.trix. To conclude, 40% kenaf/PP com.osites with superior physical and m.chanical properties m.y be used in variety of applications such as autom.tive, sports, construction, anim.l bedding, and m.ss production industries.
