This research investigated the water qualities and distribution of heavy metals concentration in rain, river, ground and supply waters, providing a baseline in Dhaka Urban, Bangladesh, against which future changes can be assessed. The water sample was collected in the Dhaka central zone, from a site located in the center of the Bengal Delta plain between 23䓨'N - 23䓶'N latitude and 90䓔'E - 90䓟'E longitude which is affected by environmental pollution for high traffic, industrialization and because of its rapid urbanization. The water samples were analyzed for heavy metals by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry (ICP-MS), major ions by Ion-Chromatography (IC), water tracer (δ18O and δD) by Mass-Spectrometry (MS), following the standard techniques. Elevated EC and chloride (Cl-) are the markers of wastewater, providing an indication of impacts in the Buriganga River water. The relative concentrations of major ions were presented in the form of Piper and Stiff Diagram. The color maps were constructed to present ions distribution over the areas. The stream reaches directly in Buriganga River from leather industries which may reflect the naturally low dissolved oxygen (DO) 0.3 - 3.5 (mg/L), where aquatic life can’t survive. Uranium contents U238 (0.1 - 2.7 μg/L) are not exceeding the WHO guideline level of 30 μg·L-1. Significant portion of Cs133 (0.05 - 0.32 μg/L), Se (0.03 - 0.12 μg/L), B (50 - 2986 μg/L) and Cr (0.55 - 18.59 μg/L), could be increased in Buriganga River areas by the effect of local sources like leather industry. Zn (10 - 1466 μg/L) in the Dhaka Rain and Pb (4 - 6 μg/L) in Dhaka Water occur mainly in industrial and the high traffic areas, respectively. The isotopic (δ18O/δD) distributions have been evaluated for understanding of contaminant sources in groundwater and wastewater recharge from Buriganga River to adjacent depleted groundwater system. Leaf Water Status and Its Relationship with Reproductive Responses of Common Bean (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i>L.) Genotypes under Water Stress

Two tolerant (BB24 and BB43) and two susceptible (BARI busbean-2 and BB04) genotypes of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were evaluated for their water status and its relationship with reproductive responses under continuous water stress (50% field capacity) and control (80% field capacity) conditions in a net house covered with polyethylene sheet at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. Under water stress condition, the susceptible genotype namely BB04 exhibited more negative leaf water potential (LWP) which was followed by that of BARI bushbean-2 in all the time of the day except at noon. The tolerant genotype namely BB24 exhibited less negative LWP at noon. The tolerant genotypes maintained higher relative water content (WRC) than the susceptible ones from dawn to dusk. The relationship between RWC and LWP was examined separately for four genotypes under water stress condition. The genotype BB24 showed a smaller decrease in RWC with more negative LWP than BB04. Water stress reduced pod setting ratio. The relationship between the leaf water status and reproductive responses showed that the genotype with a little reduction in mid-day drop of RWC or with high mid-day RWC displayed a high pod setting ratio.

Unsteady Electromagnetic Free Convection Micropolar Fluid Flow through a Porous Medium along a Vertical Porous Plate

Unsteady electromagnetic free convection flows of two-dimensional micropolar fluid through in a porous medium parallel to a vertical porous plate have been investigated numerically. Similarity analysis has been used to transform the governing equations into its non-dimensional form by using the explicit finite difference method to obtain numerical solutions. Estimated results have been gained for various values of Prandtl number, Grashof number, material parameters, micropolar parameter, electric conductivity, electric permeability, thermal relaxation time and the permeability of the porous medium. The effects of pertinent parameters on the velocity, electric induction, magnetic induction, microrotation and temperature distributions have been investigated briefly and illustrated graphically.

Encapsulation in the Food Industry: A Brief Historical Overview to Recent Developments

Encapsulation in food industry serves several functions including masking of undesirable color/flavor/taste, preservation of unstable constituents, incorporation of additional functional and nutritional components and site-specific release of encapsulated ingredients at a controlled time and rate. The knowledge of microencapsulation in other sectors like pharmaceutical industry is well advanced;however, more understanding is required to harvest the maximum benefits from food industry. This paper started with highlighting the gradual progress of microencapsulation process in food industry and ended up with some invaluable suggestions for future works. In the body, the paper reviews the major techniques of food encapsulation, choices of coating materials and the performance measurement methods of food encapsulation. Future trends, scopes and aspects of microencapsulation process in food manufacturing sector are also presented as the necessary recommendations for future researches. The article would help the microencapsulated food manufacturers to choose the target oriented encapsulates and suitable encapsulation technique.

Tribo-Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Carbonitrided 316 Austenitic Stainless Steel by rf Plasma for Biomedical Applications

AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was carbonitrided using rf plasma with purpose of using low-cost orthopedic implant materials in biomedical applications besides the manufacturing requests. The plasma treatment process was accomplished at low working gas pressure of 0.075 mbar in nitrogen-acetylene gaseous mixture. The plasma-processing time was fixed at 10 min while the plasma-processing power was varied from 450 to 650 watt. The effect of plasma treatment power on the structure, tribological, mechanical, electrochemical and biocompatibility of AISI 316 has been investigated. The structural results demonstrated the formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solutions, chromium nitride, iron carbide and iron nitride phases in the treated samples. The microhardness of the treated layer increases with increasing the processing power to reach a maximum value of approximately 1300 HV0.1 at 600 W which represents more than 6-folds increase in microhardness in comparison with the untreated matrix. The wear and corrosion resistance of the treated AISI 316 were enhanced compared to the untreated one. The friction coefficient was reduced from nearly 0.5 for the untreated substrate to nearly 0.3 for the carbonitrided sample. The surface energy and wettability of the carbonitrided samples were augmented as the plasma-processing power increased. Furthermore, the numbers of grown mesenchymal stem cells are higher for carbonitrided samples compared to the untreated one. The formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solution, chromium nitride, iron nitride and iron carbide hard phases after carbonitriding process is responsible for achieving good mechanical, tribological, biocompatibility and electrochemical properties for AISI 316 alloys.

Wheat blast,caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum(MoT)pathotype,is a devastating disease persistent in South America and *** MoT generally fails to cause visual symptoms in wheat until the heading stage when the infection would have advanced,disease control by fungicide application solely based on the detection of visual symptoms is *** develop an accurate and sensitive method to detect MoT at the seedling and vegetative stages for disease control,we sequenced the genomes of two MoT isolates from Brazil and identified two DNA fragments,MoT-6098 and MoT-6099,that are present in the MoT genome but not in the genome of the rice-infecting Magnaporthe oryzae Oryzae(MoO)*** polymerase chain reaction(PCR),we confirmed the specificity of the two markers in 53 MoT and MoO isolates from South America and *** test the efficiency of the two markers,we first established a loop-mediated isothermal amplification(LAMP)method to detect MoT at isothermal conditions,without the use of a PCR *** this,we used the Cas12a protein and guide RNAs(gRNAs)to target the MoT-6098 and MoT-6099 *** activated Cas12a showed indiscriminate single-stranded deoxyribonuclease(ssDNase)*** then combined targetdependent Cas12a ssDNase activation with recombinase polymerase amplification(RPA)and nucleic acid lateral flow immunoassay(NALFIA)to develop a method that accurately,sensitively,and cost-effectively detects MoT-specific DNA sequences in infected wheat *** novel technique can be easily adapted for the rapid detection of wheat blast and other important plant diseases in the field.

Physiological Mechanism of Thermotolerance in Wheat (<i>Triticum aestivum</i>Lin.) Seedlings

A research work was performed under sub-tropical condition (24°8'N, 90°0'E) at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur rahman Agricultural University with three wheat genotypes (BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 26 and Pavon 76) to observe the mobilization of seed reserve and seedling growth under normal (15°C/25°C) and elevated (25°C/35°C) temperature in growth chamber. The effect of high temperature on wheat seedling was observed in terms of mobilized seed reserve, respiration and transpiration efficiency and seedling growth. At 35°C temperature, maximum mobilization of seed reserve was observed in BARI Gom varieties (BARI Gom 25 and 26) but the respiration efficiency was higher in Pavon 76 in comparison to other genotypes. Maximum loss of respiration and transpiration at 35°C temperature was found to produce low seedling growth in Pavon 76. It appeared from the result that at high temperature the maximum mobilized seed reserve and subsequently minimum loss of respiration and transpiration collectively contributed a positive role for better seedling growth in BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 26. Therefore the better mobilized seed reserve and subsequently minimum loss of respiration and transpiration during seedling development are indicators of the thermo tolerance in growing wheat seedling.
