Antimicrobial peptides(AMPs)are small molecules produced by a myriad of cells and play important roles not only in protecting against infections and sustaining skin barrier homeostasis but also in contributing to immune dysregulation under pathological conditions.Recently,increasing evidence has indicated that AMPs,including cathelicidin(LL-37),humanβ-defensins,S100 proteins,lipocalin 2,and RNase 7,are highly expressed in psoriatic skin lesions.These peptides broadly regulate immunity by interacting with various immune cells and linking innate and adaptive immune responses during the progression of psoriasis.In this review,we summarize the recent findings regarding AMPs in the pathogenesis of psoriasis with a main focus on their immunomodulatory abilities.

Effect of Third Interstitial Fluid on Adverse Outcomes in Patients with Severe Pre-eclampsia and Twin Pregnancy:A 5-year Single-center Retrospective Study

Objective This study aims to identify the effect of third interstitial fluid on adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies with severe pre-eclampsia,and explore the differences in bad ending between twins and singletons.Methods The present retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with severe pre-eclampsia,who delivered in Tongji Hospital,Wuhan,China,between 2017 and 2022.The adverse outcomes in singleton and twin pregnancies with severe pre-eclampsia were initially investigated.Then,the diverse maternal and fetal consequences between singleton and twin pregnancies in patients with severe pre-eclampsia were compared after merging with the third interstitial fluid.Results A total of 709 patients were included for the present study.Among these patients,68 patients had twin pregnancies,and 641 patients had singleton pregnancies.The rate of postpartum hemorrhage(2.81%vs.13.24%,P<0.001),and admission rate to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU)after birth(30.73%vs.63.24%,P=0.011)were significantly higher in twin pregnancies.The neonatal weight of twins was statistically lower than singletons(1964.73±510.61 g vs.2142.92±731.25 g,P=0.008).For the groups with the third interstitial fluid,the delivery week(P=0.001)and rate of admission to the NICU after birth were significantly advanced in twin pregnancy group,when compared to singleton pregnancy group(P=0.032),and the length of hospital stay was shorter(P=0.044).Furthermore,there was no statistically significant difference between the twin pregnancy group and the singletony pregnancy group without the third interstitial fluid.Conclusion The maternal and fetal adverse outcomes of patients with severe pre-eclampsia increased in twin pregnancies,when compared to singleton pregnancies.Thus,when patients develop the third interstitial fluid,twin pregnancies would more likely lead to adverse fetal outcomes,when compared to singleton pregnancies,and there would be no significant difference in maternal adverse outcomes.More attention should be given to patients who merge

DEAR EDITOR,The Pegasidae family,which includes seven species of seamoths,is widely distributed in the temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific,ranging from South Africa to Hawaii.In this study,we describe a new species of seamoth,Pegasus sinensis sp.nov.,based on morphological and molecular characterization of 14 specimens collected from the surrounding waters of Xiamen City,Fujian Province,China.The new species differs from closely related P.volitans in both the density and color of spots present on the dorsal and lateral body surfaces.

The Early Cretaceous is an important coal accumulation period in China.Abundant coal resources were formed in the southeastern margin of Songliao Basin.Sequence stratigraphy and coal accumulation of the Early Cretaceous in the southeastern margin of Songliao Basin have been studied on the basis of extensive outcrop and borehole data.Based on regional unconformity,basal erosional surfaces of incised valley fills,and abrupt depositional facies-reversal surface,six sequence boundaries have been identified,which subdivide the Early Cretaceous coal-bearing series into 5 third-order sequences.Sequence I corresponds to Huoshiling Formation,sequences II and III correspond to member I and member II of Shahezi Formation.Sequences IV and V correspond to member I and member II of Yingcheng Formation.Sequence I developed at the initial subsiding stage,sequence II and III developed during the stable subsiding stage,while sequence IV and V developed during the basin shrinkage stage.The major coal seams were developed in the sequence II and III,which ensured the relative balance between the increase rate of the accommodation space and the rate of peat accumulation for a longer period,thus forming a thick coal seam.

Diapause is a long-lived stage which has evolved into an important strategy for insects to circumvent extreme environments.In the pupal stage,Helicoverpa armigera can enter diapause,a state characterized by significantly decreased metabolic activity and enhanced stress resistance,to survive cold winters.Previous studies have shown that reactive oxygen species(ROS)can promote the diapause process by regulating a distinct insulin signaling pathway.However,the source of ROS in the diapause-destined pupal brains and mechanisms by which ROS regulate diapause are still unknown.In this study,we showed that diapause-destined pupal brains accumulated high levels of mitochondrial ROS(mtROS)and total ROS during the diapause process,suggesting that mitochondria are the main source of ROS in diapause-destined pupal brains.In addition,injection of 2-deoxy-D-glucose(DOG),a glucose metabolism inhibitor,could delay pupal development by elevating mtROS levels in the nondiapause-destined pupal brains.Furthermore,the injection of a metabolite mixture to increase metabolic activity could avert the diapause process in diapause-destined pupae by decreasing mtROS levels.We also found that ROS could activate HSP60 expression and promote the stability of the HSP60-Lon complex,increasing its ability to degrade mitochondrial transcription factor A(TFAM)and decreasing mitochondrial activity or biogenesis under oxidative stress.Thus,this study illustrated the beneficial function of ROS in diapause or lifespan extension by decreasing mitochondrial activity.

For the case that two pursuers intercept an evasive target,the cooperative strategies and state estimation methods taken by pursuers can seriously affect the guidance accuracy for the target,which performs a bang For the case that two pursuers intercept an evasive target,the cooperative strategies and state estimation methods taken by pursuers can seriously affect the guidance accuracy for the target,which performs a bang-bang evasive maneuver with a random switching time.Combined Fast multiple model adaptive estimation(Fast MMAE)algorithm,the cooperative guidance law takes detection configuration affecting the accuracy of interception into consideration.Introduced the detection error model related to the line-of-sight(LOS)separation angle of two interceptors,an optimal cooperative guidance law solving the optimization problem is designed to modulate the LOS separation angle to reduce the estimation error and improve the interception performance.Due to the uncertainty of the target bang-bang maneuver switching time and the effective fitting of its multi-modal motion,Fast MMAE is introduced to identify its maneuver switching time and estimate the acceleration of the target to track and intercept the target accurately.The designed cooperative optimal guidance law with Fast MMAE has better estimation ability and interception performance than the traditional guidance law and estimation method via Monte Carlo simulation.

Objective:The objective of this study was to investigate the application of unenhanced computed tomography(CT)texture analysis in differentiating pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma(PASC)from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC).Methods:Preoperative CT images of 112 patients(31 with PASC,81 with PDAC)were retrospectively reviewed.A total of 396 texture parameters were extracted from AnalysisKit software for further texture analysis.Texture features were selected for the differentiation of PASC and PDAC by the Mann-Whitney U test,univariate logistic regression analysis,and the minimum redundancy maximum relevance algorithm.Furthermore,receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the texture feature-based model by the random forest(RF)method.Finally,the robustness and reproducibility of the predictive model were assessed by the 10-times leave-group-out cross-validation(LGOCV)method.

This paper presents an experimental study to compare the performance of model-free control strategies for pneumatic soft robots.Fabricated using soft materials,soft robots have gained much attention in academia and industry during recent years because of their inherent safety in human interaction.However,due to structural flexibility and compliance,mathematical models for these soft robots are nonlinear with an infinite degree of freedom(DOF).Therefore,accurate position(or orientation)control and optimization of their dynamic response remains a challenging task.Most existing soft robots currently employed in industrial and rehabilitation applications use model-free control algorithms such as PID.However,to the best of our knowledge,there has been no systematic study on the comparative performance of model-free control algorithms and their ability to optimize dynamic response,i.e.,reduce overshoot and settling time.In this paper,we present comparative performance of several variants of model-free PID-controllers based on extensive experimental results.Additionally,most of the existing work on modelfree control in pneumatic soft-robotic literature use manually tuned parameters,which is a time-consuming,labor-intensive task.We present a heuristic-based coordinate descent algorithm to tune the controller parameter automatically.We presented results for both manual tuning and automatic tuning using the Ziegler-Nichols method and proposed algorithm,respectively.We then used experimental results to statistically demonstrate that the presented automatic tuning algorithm results in high accuracy.The experiment results show that for soft robots,the PID-controller essentially reduces to the PI controller.This behavior was observed in both manual and automatic tuning experiments;we also discussed a rationale for removing the derivative term.

Biomedical magnesium(Mg)alloys have garnered significant attention because of their unique biodegradability,favorable biocompatibility,and suitable mechanical properties.The incorporation of rare earth(RE)elements,with their distinct physical and chemical properties,has greatly contributed to enhancing the mechanical performance,degradation behavior,and biological performance of biomedical Mg alloys.Currently,a series of RE-Mg alloys are being designed and investigated for orthopedic implants and cardiovascular stents,achieving substantial and encouraging research progress.In this work,a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art in biomedical RE-Mg alloys is provided.The physiological effects and design standards of RE elements in biomedical Mg alloys are discussed.Particularly,the degradation behavior and mechanical properties,including their underlying action are studied in-depth.Furthermore,the preparation techniques and current application status of RE-Mg alloys are reviewed.Finally,we address the ongoing challenges and propose future prospects to guide the development of high-performance biomedical Mg-RE alloys.
