Background:Promising efficacy and manageable toxicity of docetaxel-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy(CCRT)were reported in head and neck *** addition,the effect of CCRT in combination with cisplatin and/or 5-fluorouracil on both locoregionally advanced and metastatic/recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)was ***,CCRT with docetaxel for locoregionally advanced NPC are not well *** study aimed to compare effectiveness and toxicities of CCRT with weekly docetaxel versus tri-weekly cisplatin for locoregionally advanced ***:Clinical data of patients with locoregionally advanced NPC newly diagnosed between January 2010 and December 2014 receiving CCRT with either weekly docetaxel(15 mg/m2)or tri-weekly cisplatin(80-100 mg/m2)were *** score matching at a 1:1 ratio was performed to balance baseline *** events and survival were compared between the two ***:A total of 962 patients were included as the whole cohort,and 448 patients were matched and were regarded as the matched *** median follow-up duration was 48 months for the whole *** 3-year nodal recurrence-free survival rate was significantly increased for patients treated with docetaxel in both the whole(hazard ratio[HR]=0.37,95%confidence interval[CI]0.19-0.72,P=0.030)and matched cohorts(HR=0.33,95%CI 0.14-0.79,P=0.023).However,no significant differences were observed in overall survival,local recurrence-free survival,and distant metastasis-free survival between the two groups in both *** higher rates of grade 3 radiodermatitis(6.7%vs.1.8%,P=0.001),mucositis(74.5%vs.37.9%,P<0.001),and leucopenia(2.2%vs.11.6%,P<0.001)were observed in the docetaxel group,but any grade of renal injury(1.8%vs.15.1%,P<0.001),vomiting(18.8%vs.88.3%,P<0.001),and ALT elevation(19.2%vs.31.3%,P=0.027)were more common in the cisplatin ***:CCRT with weekly low-dose docetaxel is an effective and tolerable therapeutic reg

Agent-Based Network Modeling Study of Immune Responses in Progression of Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, is a chronic inflammatory disorder that results in ulcers of the colon and rectum without known etiology. Ulcerative colitis causes a huge public health care burden particularly in developed countries. Many studies suggest that ulcerative colitis results from an abnormal immune response against components of cornrnensal rnicrobiota in genetically susceptible individuals. However, understanding of the disease mechanisms at cellular and molecular levels remains largely elusive. In this paper, a network model is developed based on our previous study and computer simulations are perforrned using an agent-based network modeling to elucidate the dynamics of immune response in ulcerative colitis progression. Our modeling study identifies several important positive feedback loops as a driving force for ulcerative colitis initiation and progression. The results demonstrate that although immune response in ulcerative colitis patients is dominated by anti-inflarnrnatory/regulatory cells such as alternatively activated rnacrophages and type II natural killer T cells, proinflarnrnatory cells including classically activated rnacrophages, T helper 1 and T helper 17 cells, and their secreted cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-12, interleukin-23, interleukin-17 and interferon-γ remain at certain levels （lower than those in Crohn＇s disease, another inflammatory bowel disease）. Long-terrn exposure to these proinflarnrnatory components, causes rnucosal tissue damage persistently, leading to ulcerative colitis. Our simulation results are qualitatively in agreement with clinical and laboratory measurements, offering novel insight into the disease mechanisms.

MOF-derived Cu2O/Cu NPs on N-doped Porous Carbon as a Multifunctional Sensor for Mercury(Ⅱ) and Glucose with Wide Detection Range

Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles(NPs)in the nanoporous carbon matrix(designated as Cu2O/Cu@NPC)has been synthesized by in-situ calcination of a cupper-based metal-organic framework(Cu-MOF),and its morphology and composition were characterized by PXRD,SEM and ***,elemental mapping and XPS analysis not only show Cu NPs is generated along with nitrogen(N)-doped carbon,but also indicate Cu2O NPs locates in the external layer of Cu@*** addition,the adsorption of dye studies implies that Cu2O/Cu@NPC exhibits obvious interaction with Rhodamine B(Rh B)due to the feature of porous and N-doped ***2O/Cu@NPC has highly electrocatalytic performance for glucose and mercury(Ⅱ)with wide detection range and good stability,which can be used as a novel multifunctional sensor for glucose and mercury(Ⅱ).

Liming is often applied to alleviate soil acidification and increase crop yield on acidic soils,but its effect on soil phosphorus(P)availability is unclear,particularly in rice *** objective of this study was to examine the effect of liming on rice production,yield and P uptake in a three-year field experiment in a double rice cropping system in subtropical *** also conducted an incubation experiment to investigate the direct effect of liming on soil available P and phosphatase activities on paddy soils in the absence of *** the incubation experiment,liming reduced soil P availability(measured as Olsenextractable P)by 14–17%and inhibited the activity of soil acid ***,lime application increased grain yield,biomass,and P uptake in the *** increased grain yield and P uptake more strongly for late rice(26 and 21%,respectively)than for early rice(15 and 8%,respectively).Liming reduced the concentration of soil available P in the field as well,reflecting the increase in rice P uptake and the direct negative effect of liming on soil P *** together,these results suggest that by stimulating rice growth,liming can overcome direct negative effects on soil P availability and increase plant P uptake in this acidic paddy soil where P is not the limiting factor.

Generation of Gaussian-Shape Single Photons for High Efficiency Quantum Storage

We report the generation of heralded single photons with Gaussian-shape temporal waveforms through the spatial light modulation technique in an atomic ensemble. Both the full width at half maximum and the peak position of the Gaussian waveform can be controlled while the single photon nature holds well. We also analyze the bandwidth of the generated single photons in frequency domain and show how the sidebands of the frequency spectrum are modified by the shape of the temporal waveform. The generated single photons are especially suited for the realization of high efficiency quantum storage based on electromagnetically induced transparency.

Effects of Ligustrum robustum on gut microbes and obesity in rats

AIM: To investigate the anti-obesity and antibacterial effects of Ligustrum robustum(L. robustum) in vivoand in vitro and its possible mechanisms. METHODS: The effects of L. robustum aqueous extract(LR) on various gut bacteria in vitro were evaluated. The effects of LR on high-fat diet-fed(HFD) rats in vivo were also assessed. Culture methods,quantitative polymerase chain reaction,and terminalrestriction fragment length polymorphism were used to analyze the effects of LR on gut bacteria. Biochemical tests were also performed to detect the changes in obesity-related indicators after LR treatment. RESULTS: LR treatment lowered adipose weight and decreased Lee's index,blood glucose,total cholesterol,and lipid in the tested groups relative to control(P < 0.05). To determine the reasons for these changes,we assessed the potential bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of LR on specific bacterial species in vitro. LR affected the richness,diversity,and evenness of gut bacteria,increased fecal Lactobacillus,and decreased Enterococci in HFD rats(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: L. robustum may be a safe and effective food for weight loss and obesity control,and the effects of L. robustum might be mediated by the regulation of gut bacteria.
