Citrus reticulata (Mandarin Orange), commonly known as “Sweet Orange”, is one of th. most difficult plants to improve th.ough.traditional breeding approach.s as it poses various biological limitations th.t greatly h.nder th. cultivar improvement. In th. present study, using th. fresh.seed of native orange as explant, an efficient, reproducible, regeneration meth.d was developed th.ough.in vitro organogenesis. Mature, h.alth. and deh.sked seeds were treated with.Murash.ge and Skoog, (MS) media containing 3% sucrose, 0.7% agar supplemented with.different concentrations and combinations of ph.toh.rmones. Th. h.gh.st calli initiation (93.3% ± 0.5%) responses were observed on MS medium supplemented with.2,4-dich.oroph.noxyacetic acid (2,4-D) at 3.0 mg/L followed by 2,4-D at 3.5 mg/L (86.7% ± 1.75%) in th.s experiment. Maximum sh.ot regeneration (86.7% ± 3.35%) responses were reported using MS medium supplemented with.th. combination of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) at 3.0 mg/L and 1-naph.h.leneacetic acid (NAA) at 2.0 mg/L. MS medium supplemented with.NAA at 1.0 mg/L sh.wed th. best rooting (80% ± 2.89%) response in comparison to (70% ± 5.20%) indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at 1.0 mg/L. Th. regenerated plantlets were acclimatized in pots containing sterile garden soil mixture to examine th.ir response in natural conditions.

In-vitro callus induction and regeneration meth.d was developed using different plant growth.regulators (PGRs), and basal media (Murash.ge and Skoog (MS), Ch. (N6) and Gamborg (B5) media) of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck. Observations of th. effect of PGRs were carried out using different concentrations of 2,4-dich.oroph.noxyacetic acid (2,4-D),1-naph.h.lene acetic acid (NAA) and combinations of 2,4-D and NAA using different basal media. Th.s study found Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck exh.bited a h.gh.frequency of callus induction on MS medium supplemented with.3 mg/L 2,4-D and callus induction frequency was 86.7% ± 3.4% wh.reas N6 and B5 sh.wed lower callus induction frequency of 83.3% ± 8.8% and 82.2% ± 1.9% respectively compared to th.t of MS media with.supplementation of th. same h.rmone. Among th. induced calli, th. morph.logical analysis sh.wed only 40% - 50% was embryogenic calli. Regeneration of plantlets from calli was done using different concentrations and combinations of auxin and cytokinin. Th. study sh.wed th.t 3 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) supplemented medium h.s th. maximum potential to promote regeneration of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck from embryogenic calli with.th. frequency of 89.3% ± 8.8% but no regeneration occurred from th. non-embryogenic calli. Th. regenerated plantlets were rooted on MS medium with.supplementation of 5 mg/l NAA. Th.se observations in Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck regeneration will be h.lpful for genetic improvement with.desired traits.

Seeds of Indian mustard （Brassicajuncea （L.） Czern. et Coss.） were exposed to 0, 50, 100 and 150 mmol/L NaCI for 8 h.and seeds were sown in an earth.n pot. Th.se stressed seedlings were subsequently sprayed with.10μmol/L salicylic acid （SA） at 30 d and were sampled at 60 d to assess th. ch.nges in growth. ph.tosynth.sis and antioxidant enzymes. Th. seedlings raised from th. seeds treated with.NaCI h.d significantly reduced growth.and th. activities of carbonic anh.drase, nitrate reductase and ph.tosynth.sis, and th. decrease was proportional to th. increase in NaCI concentration. h.wever, th. antioxidant enzymes （catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase） and proline content was enh.nced in response to NaCI and/or SA treatment, wh.re th.ir interaction h.d an additive effect. Moreover, th. toxic effects generated by th. lower concentration of NaCI （50 mmol/L） were completely overcome by th. application of SA. It was, th.refore, concluded th.t SA ameliorated th. stress generated by NaCl th.ough.th. alleviated antioxidant system.

Multifractal analysis is carried out for th. interactions of 4.5 A and 14.5 A GeV/c 28Si beams with.emulsion, CNO and AgBr targets using th. standard meth.d of Gq moments. Th. Rényi dimensions Dq are evaluated and th. results on self-similar multifractal spectra are presented. Th. variation of Dq with.q is looked into and th. findings reveal th.t th. beh.viour is in consistency with.th. multifractal ch.racteristic of th. multiplicity distributions in th. various interactions studied. Th. self-similar multifractal spectra are found to be concave downwards with.maximum at αq = 0. Furth.r, Lévy stability analysis is carried out for th.se interactions. Th. Lévy stability index μ extracted from multifractal spectrum is found to lie in th. range [0, 2] in agreement with.th. Lévy stability th.ory.

Nigh.-time Oh.levels h.ve been determined for UK urban surface environments using two meth.ds, th. decay and steady state approximation meth.ds. Measurement data from th. UK National Environmental Tech.ology Centre arch.ve for four urban sites （Bristol, h.rwell, London Elth.m and Edinburgh. over th. time period of 1996 to 2000 h.ve been used in th.s study. Th.ee reactive alkenes, namely isoprene, 1,3-butadiene and trans-2-pentene were ch.sen for th. calculation of Oh.levels by th. decay meth.d. h.urly measurements of NO, NO〉 03, CO and 20 VOCs were used to determine nigh.-time Oh.level using th. steady state approximation meth.d. Our results sh.wed th.t th. nigh.-time Oh.levels were in th. range of 1 × 10^3-1× 10^6 molecules/cm3 at th.se four urbap sites in th. UK. Th. application of a t-test of th.se analyses indicated th.t except Bristol, th.re was no significant difference between th. Oh.levels found from th. decay and steady state approximation meth.ds. Nigh.-time levels of th. Oh.radical appeared to peak in summer and spring time tracking th. nigh.-time 03 levels wh.ch.also passed th.ough.a maximum at th.s time.

A study on to identify th. relationsh.p between blood lead and cognitive development was conducted on primary sch.ol ch.ldren in Malaysia. About 413 ch.ldren aged 62^/1 - 82^/1 years from urban （236）, rural （80） and industrial areas （97） were studied. Blood lead was analyzed using th. Atomic Absorption Spectroph.tometer （GFAAS）. Cognitive development was measured by th. ＇McCarth. Scales of Ch.ldren＇s Abilities Test＇（MSCA）. Significant differences found in th. mean cognitive scores between th. urban （94.40）, industrial （102.90） and suburban ch.ldren （101.24）（p 〈 0.001）, with.th. blood lead between th. urban （3.66 p.g/dL）, industrial （3.54 μg/dL） and suburban ch.ldren （3.04μg/dL）（p = 0.022）. Significant inverse correlations between blood lead and cognitive scores found for all groups （p 〈 0.001）, urban （p 〈 0.001） and suburban ch.ldren （p 〈 0.001）. Low blood lead significantly influenced th. cognitive development for all ch.ldren after adjusting for confounders （p _〈 0.001）. Th. urban ch.ldren＇s cognitive scores were significantly influenced by blood lead levels and h.useh.ld income （p 〈 0.001）. h.wever, for th. suburban ch.ldren, th. cognitive score were significantly influenced by th. blood lead levels, th. moth.rs＇ education, number of siblings, sequence in th. family and th. h.useh.ld income （p 〈 0.001 ）. Blood lead below 10μg/dL influenced th. cognitive development. Urban ch.ldren h.d h.gh.r blood lead but suburban ch.ldren with.lower blood lead were also vulnerable to th. effect of lead on th.ir cognitive development.

Determination of Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Red Seaweed, （Gracilaria manilaensis） against Different Cancer Cell Lines

Antioxidants play an important role in inh.biting and scavenging free radicals in h.man, providing protection against cellular damage in relation to cancer initiation. Seaweeds h.ve been proved to h.ve h.gh.antioxidant activity. Th.s, th.s research.was carried out to determine th. antioxidant and anticancer properties of edible red seaweed, Gracilaria manilaensis （Gracilariales, Rh.doph.ta）. Th. extracts were prepared by Soxh.et extraction using organic solvents with.different polarities. Th. antioxidant activities of extracts were determined in terms of th.ir flee radical scavenging activity （RSA IC50） and total ph.nolic content （TPC）. Th. cytotoxic activity of extracts were tested against h.man ovarian cancer cell line （Caov-3）, h.man breast cancer cell line （MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7）, h.man cervical cell line （h.La）, mouse fibroblast cell line （L929） and Madin-Darby canine kidney （MDCK） and th. cell viability after 72 h.incubation was determined by meth.lene blue assay. Th. findings sh.wed th.t acetone extract h.s th. lowest DPPh.IC50 value followed by eth.l acetate extract. Both.extracts also sh.wed h.gh.values of TPC. Dich.orometh.ne extract h.d th. strongest cytotoxic on MDA-MB-231 （53.90 μg/mL ± 5.59 μg/mL） and h.La （95.50 μg/mL）. Wh.le, acetone and eth.l acetate extracts were cytotoxic on MCF-7 （66.07 μg/mL） and Caov-3 （69.67 μg/mL ± 13.94 μg/mL）. It could be concluded th.t th. antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of G. manilaensis were influenced by th. types of solvents used and th.s h.d a potential to develop as a cancer ch.moprevention or anticancer agent against selected cancer.
