Biomass and net primary productivity of mangrove communities along the Oligohaline zone of Sundarbans, Bangladesh

Background： The article presents the first estimates of biomass and productivity for mangrove forests along the Oligohaline zone of the Sundarbans Reserve Forest （SRF）, Bangladesh. This study was conducted overone year from March 2016 to April 20] 7. Stand structure, above and below-ground biomass changes, and litterfall production were measured within a 2100 m2 sample plot. Methods： All trees in the study plots were numbered and height （H） and diameter at breast height （DBH） were measured. Tree height （H） and DBH for each tree were measured in March 2016 and 2017. We apply the above and belowground biomass equation for estimating the biomass of the mangrove tree species （Chave et al. Oecologia 145：87-99, 2005; Komiyama et al. J Trop Ecol 21：471-477, 2005）. Litterfall was collected using 1-mm mesh litter traps with collection area of 0.42 m2. Net Primary Production （NPP） was estimated by the summation method of Ogawa Primary productivity of Japanese forests： productivity of terrestrial communities, JIBP synthesis （1977） and Matsuura and Kajimoto Carbon dynamics of terrestrial ecosystem： Systems approach to global environment （2013）. Results： Heritiero fomes has maintained its dominance of the stand and also suffered the highest tree mortality （2.4%） in the suppressed crown class. The total above-ground biomass （AGB） and below-ground biomass （BGB） of the studied stand was ]54.8 and 84.2 ***-1, respectively. Among the total biomass of the trees, 64.8% was allocated to AGB and 35.2% to BGB. In case of species-wise contribution of biomass allocation, Avicennia officinalis showed the highest score and Aglaia cucullota the lowest. Mean annual total litterfall was 10.1 Mg-ha ***-1, with the maximum litterfall in winter or dry season and late summer or rainy season. The mean AGB increment and above-ground net primary productivity （AGNPP） were 7.1 and 17.2 ***-1, respectively. Fort Munro Formation represents the products of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in the middle and lower Indus basins. The formation is exposed in the Rakhi Nala (Sulaiman Range), Bara Nala (Lakhi Range) and Naka Pabni (Southern Pab Range) areas. Major and trace elemental geochemistry and petrographic studies of the formation have been carried out to understand the facies trends in the middle and lower Indus basins. A high amount of acid-insoluble fraction, Ca/Mg and Mg vs. Ca/Sr ratio reveal that the formation was deposited in a shallow marine regressive environment. High amounts of clastic reflect abundant influx of terrigenous materials from the east (Indian craton) and west (Bibai volcanic). High Sr content indicates that aragonite was the precursor mineral, which was transformed into stable low-Mg calcite during diagenesis. Enrichment of Cu and Zn contents in the samples of the formation implies the influence of volcanic activity and that they were incorporated into the calcite lattice in the late phase.

Foreign body ingestion is a commonly encountered *** majority of foreign bodies pass in stool spontaneously within one week or are managed endoscopically within the first 24e48 *** guidelines are available for management of chronically retained foreign bodies at present.A unique case is presented of two chronically retained teaspoons in the stomach that failed endoscopic retrieval and required laparoscopic *** operatively,the patient did well with no complications.A large foreign body that is not amenable to endoscopic intervention will benefit from *** expertise is available,laparoscopic intervention is a safe and feasible option to remove large foreign bodies from the stomach that is not amenable to endoscopic retrieval.

Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia is one of the sequela of thoraco-abdominal injury,occurring in about 0.5%-5% of patients presenting post major *** vehicle collision is the leading blunt trauma etiology.A high level of suspicion is essential to discover such injuries,as a majority of the patients can be asymptomatic.A case of a successful trans-abdominal laparoscopic reduction and repair of a large acute traumatic diaphragmatic hernia is presented as a video *** were able to evacuate all intrathoracic air,obliviating the need for a chest *** operatively the patient did well with no *** expertise is available,laparoscopic intervention is a feasible option even for large traumatic diaphragmatic hernia preventing the need for a large midline laparotomy incision.

Orbital apex syndrome after tooth extraction in an immunocompromised patient

A 60 year-old man presented with acute on set of left eye proptosis and ptosis. It was associated with poor vision, eye pain and restriction of eye movement of the same eye after 5 hours post left upper molar tooth extraction. The visual acuity in the left eye was hand movement. There was severe ptosis and proptosis of the left eye. The conjunctiva was chemotic with quite anterior chamber. The pupil was mid dilated and sluggished to light. The ocular movement was restricted in all directions. Fundoscopy of the left eye revealed features of central retinal artery occlusion with hyperaemic disc and subretinal exudates at posterior pole. The right eye appeared normal. Urgent MRI brain and orbit revealed severe left paranasal sinusitis with anterior displacement of the left globe and presence orbital abscess. Patient was managed with Otorhinolaryngology and Neurosurgery teams. He underwent emergency transnasal drainage of abscess. Histopathological examination of unhealthy sinus mucosa showed evidence of fungal infection. However, the culture and sensitivity result was inconclusive. Patient was treated with amphotericin B, ceftriaxone, amoxicillin clavulanate and metronidazole. Patient was detected to have high blood sugar level and was managed accordingly. The proptosis improved with treatment. However, his vision, ptosis and ophthalmoplegia remained static. Assessing the immunocompromised status is important for the management of patient presented as acute orbital apex syndrome to avoid fatal outcome.

Comparative studies of elemental composition in leaves and flowers of Catharanthus roseus growing in Bangladesh

Objective:To investigate the elemental composition of the leaves and flowers of Catharanthus roseus(***) due to the plant's wide application in the indigenous medicinal system and its chemical constituents' ***:The atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for quantitative analysis of various ***:Total 13 important elements were analyzed in leaves and flowers of *** indicated the presence of Na,K,Ca,Mg,Cr,Fe,Zn,Al,Cu,Ni,Pb,Cd and Mn in both leaves and *** most important finding of the work was that,leaves of *** showed high concentration of all elements except K and Zn while flowers of *** showed higher concentration of K and ***:The elemental composition in both leaves and flowers of *** were found to be ***,different parts of this medicinal plant are enriched in some micro and macro nutrients like Fe,Ca,Na,K,Zn,which are very important for biological metabolic system as well as human health.

Studies of lead toxicity on inflammatory damage and innate immune functions in testicular macrophages of male Swiss albino mice

Immune infertility has gained impetus in recent years. Various scientific studies have been carried out on the toxic effects of lead on immune function;however, uncertainties still persist. The present study addresses the immunomodulatory effects of testicular macrophages caused due to lead exposure (in-vivo). In mice, lead has a primary effect on the testes, and acts at all levels of the reproductive as well as the testicular immune response. The study was undertaken to investigate the effects of lead acetate on immune system in Swiss albino mice and the underlying mechanism of pro-inflammatory cytokine action. The immunomodulatory effects of lead are complex and appear to involve multiple pathways, not all of which are fully understood. Testicular macrophage dysfunctions by lead was studied by calculating morphological alteration and associated cell functions of innate immunity followed by estimation of pro-inflammatory cytokine release (TNF-α). The present work shows that lead is responsible for a significant morphological alteration, reducing cell function in testicular macrophages probably by increasing oxidative damage whereas increase in TNF-α release was also observed which increased inflammation. Results demonstrated that lead intoxication leads to increase in pro-inflammatory response. TNF-α is probably unable to bind with the surface receptor in testicular macrophages because of altered morphology which reduces cell function and ultimately causes reproductive dysfunction.

A Study on the Development of Touchless Mouse by Object Tracking through Webcam

In this paper, we study the continuous growth of computer technology and the increasing importance of human-computer interaction. Interactive touch-less is now an undergoing developing technology in real life. Touchless technology introduces a new way of interacting with computers by object tracking method. Nowadays most mobile devices are using touchscreen technology. However, this technology is still not cheap enough to be used in desktop systems. Designing a touchless device such as a mouse or keyboard using a webcam and computer vision techniques can be an alternative way of touch screen technology. Recent trends in technology aim to build highly interactive and easy-to-use applications as a replacement for conventional devices. Such a device is touchless mouse. Its development is completed on the MATLAB platform. The overall objective is to apply image processing techniques from video to track the movement of color which is captured by a webcam and that is converted into mouse movements and operations to control the system. The sub-system which is implemented here would allow a person to control his/her mouse without any input other than the marker movements. We use three fingers (with color) as three color markers (red, green, blue) for completing the activities of a mouse. My first goal was to successfully track the marker color and the second goal was to track the marker position from the acquired image frame for performing the mouse operations. The webcam is used to capture the information on the marker and trigger the associated actions. I use ***. Robot file for performing the mouse operations using the acquired data from the image frame.

Background:Noncommunicable diseases(NCDs)are public health threats globally and recognized impediments to socioeconomic *** study aimed to identify the prevalence and clustering of NCDs risk factors among Bangladeshi men and women aged 20-59 years using nationally representative ***:This study was conducted in 82 rural,nonslum urban,and slum clusters across all eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh using multistage cluster sampling.A total of 4917 men and 4905 women aged 20-59 years were included in the *** analyses were performed to report the prevalence and distribution of behavioral and clinical risk *** binary logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with the coexistence of three or more NCD risk ***:The prevalence of tobacco use(any form),insufficient physical activity,inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption,overweight and obesity,and central obesity were 38.3%,13.6%,87.1%,42.3%,and 36.0%,***,21.9%and 4.9%participants had hypertension and self-reported diabetes,*** the clustering of risk factors,37.1%men and 50.8%women had at least three NCD risk *** 3.0%men and 1.8%women reported no NCD risk ***,place of residence,education,and wealth status were associated with the presence of at least three risk factors for both ***:Since a large proportion of Bangladeshi 20-59 years old population had multiple risk factors,population-based programs with multisectoral approaches are essential to reduce NCDs among Bangladeshi women and men.

Objectives:To determine the association of Human leukocyte antigen B(HLA‑B)alleles with ankylosing spondylitis and the allelic association of HLAB27 with endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1(ERAP1)single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)rs30187 in patients with ankylosing spondylitis(AS).Methods:We studied 48 consecutively enrolled well-defined AS patients and 48 healthy controls recruited from the outpatient clinic of the rheumatology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU),Dhaka,*** genotype HLA-B alleles from peripheral blood DNA,we designed sequence-specific primers for polymerase chain ***'s sequencing method was used to detect the ERAP1 rs30187 *** HLA-B allele distributions were compared between cases and *** infer an allelic association between HLA-B27 and ERAP1,allele distributions from both loci were compared using ***-squared test or Fisher's exact test was used to quantify the association,and their strength of association was tested by odds ratio(OR)with 95%confidence interval(CI).Results:The frequency of HLA-B27 was found to be higher in AS patients(60.4%)than in healthy controls(8.3%).HLA-B27 allele had an OR of 16.8(95%CI=5.2–54.4)for the development of ***,4%of AS patients had both HLA-B27 and *** significant association was found between ERAP1 rs30187 SNP and HLA-B27 in patients with AS(OR=1.7,95%CI=0.5–5.6).Conclusions:HLA-B27 was significantly associated with AS in patients in ***,no association between ERAP1 rs30187 SNP and HLA-B27 was observed.
