Objective:To investigate th. antibacterial activity of h.nna(Lawsonia inermis Linn) obtained from different regions of Oman against a wide array of ***:fresh.h.nna samples were obtained from different regions of Oman as leaves and seeds,100 g fresh.and dry leaves and SO g of fresh.and dry seeds were separately soaked in 500 mL of eth.nol for th.ee days,respectively,with.frequent *** mixture was filtered,and th. crude extract was *** crude extract was th.n h.ated,at 48 ℃ in a water bath.to evaporate its liquid *** dry crude h.nna extract was th.n tested for its antibacterial activity using well-diffusion antibiotic susceptibility *** extracts were investigated for th.ir antibacterial activity at different concentrations against a wide array of different micro-organisms including a laboratory standard bacterial strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(NCTC 10662)(A aeruginosa) and eleven fresh.clinical isolates of *** obtained from patients attending th. Sultan Qaboos University h.spital(SQUh..2-h.droxy-p-Nath.qinone-Tech.2-h.NT, MW=174.16,C_(10)h.40_3) was included as control(at 50%concentration) along with.th. h.nna samples ***:h.nna samples demonstrated antibacterial activity against all isolates but th. h.gh.st susceptibility was against *** with.h.nna samples obtained from al-sh.rqyia ***:Omani h.nna from al-sh.rqyia region demonstrates h.gh.in vitro anti-P. aeruginosa activity compared with.many h.nna samples from different regions of Oman.

AIM： To investigate th. role of cytoch.ome P450 （CYP） in th. carcinogenesis of squamous-cell carcinoma （SCC） in h.man esoph.gus by determining expression patterns and protein levels of representative CYPs in esoph.geal tissue of patients with.SCC and controls. METh.DS： mRNA expression of CYP2E1, CYP2C, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5 was determined using RT-PCR in both.normal and malignant esoph.geal tissues of patients with.untreated esoph.geal SCC （/7 = 21） and in controls （n = 10）. Protein levels of CYP2E1, CYP2CS, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5 were measured by Western blot. RESULTS： With.n th. group of SCC patients, mRNA expression of CYP 3A4 and CYP2C was significantly lower in malignant tissue （-39% and -74%, respectively, P 〈 0.05） th.n in normal tissue. Similar results were found in CYP3A4 protein levels. Between groups, CYP3A4, CYP3A5, and CYP2C8 protein concentration was significantly h.gh.r in non-malignant tissue of SCC patients （4.8-, 2.9-, and 1.9-fold elevation, P 〈 0.05） th.n in controls. In contrast, CYP2E1 protein levels were significantly h.gh.r in controls th.n in SCC patients （＋46%, P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Significant differences exist in protein levels of certain CYPs in non-malignant esoph.geal tissue （e.g. CYP2CB, CYP3A4, CYP3A5, and CYP2E1） between SCC patients and h.alth. subjects and may contribute to th. development of SCC in th. esoph.gus.

Th. wh.tefly is well-known as a serious pest on many economic vegetable crops. It feeds by absorbing plant sap wh.ch.includes many important nutrients for plant,＇;. An experiment was carried out to investigate th. effect of wh.tefly, B. tabaci （Gennadius）, infestation on th. micronutrients; Manganese, Zinc, Copper and Molybdenum, in th.ee plant varieties; cantaloupe （Cucumis melo L.）, cucumber （Cucumis sativus L.） and zucch.ni （Cucurbita pepo L.） th.t were planted in a greenh.use at th. Agricultural Research.Station in h.da AI sham, north.east of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Results of th.s investigation sh.wed th.t, in general wh.tefly infestation reduced micronutrients content in plants. Mean content of total micronutrients in each.of infested cucumber and zucch.ni were less th.n control plants significantly, but th. infestation did not vary total micronutrients content in cantaloupe significantly. Feeding of th. wh.tefly reduced mean content of each.Zinc and Molybdenum in infested plants significantly, but did not vary Manganese and Copper content significantly.

Results Th. research.carried out in h.ng Kong covers etiology, natural beh.vior, treatment and prognosis of NPC. Th.se studies not only elucidated th. different aspects of NPC, many of th.se new findings will also guide future directions of research. Conclusions Major efforts h.ve been made to research.into th. various aspects of NPC with.important findings wh.ch.will translate into better treatment results. As th.s tumor is uncommon in oth.r parts of th. world, continued efforts to improve th. prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and care of th.s tumor are required in Ch.na.

Many temperature indicators or sensors sh.w color ch.nges for materials used in food and medical ***, th.y are not h.lpful for a color-blind person or ch.ldren wh. lack judgment. In th.s paper, we introduce simply fabricated and more useful low-temperature indicator(~30 °C) for devices th.t actuates using paraffin-infiltrated multiwalled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) coiled yarn. Th. density difference of MWCNT yarn provides large strain(~330 %)wh.n h.at causes th. melted polymer to move. Furth.rmore, th. MWCNT yarn decreases th. melting point of *** properties allow control of th. actuating temperature. In addition, mech.nical strength.was enh.nced by MWCNT th.n previously reported temperature-responsive actuators based on sh.pe memory polymers. Th.s simply fabricated temperature indicator can be applied in latch.ng devices for medical and biological fields.

siRNA targeting Livin decreases tumor in a xenograft model for colon cancer

AIM： To evaluate th. effect of silencing Livin gene expression with.siRNA to apoptosis and proliferation in a colon cancer cell line. METh.DS： To investigate th. anticancer effect of silencing Livin gene expression, we establish.d an siRNA transfected cell line using th. h.T116 colon cancer cell line. After confirming th. successful transfection, MTT assay, flow cytometry and annexin V staining were em- ployed to evaluate th. antiapoptotic effect. To confirm th. in vivo effect of Livin-siRNA, different doses of LivinsiRNA were injected into xenografted tumors in BalB/c nude mice model. RESULTS： Livin expression was dramatically decreased after siRNA transfection, especially at 25 umol/L of siRNA, but th.s suppression was not dose-dependent. Th. cell count at 18 h.after transfection was significantly reduced as compared with.controls （P 〈 0.01）, but tended not to decrease proportionally depending on transfected dose or time. MTT assay revealed th.t silencing th. Livin gene suppressed cellular proliferation at 18 h.after transfection （P = 0.04）; h.wever, th. inh.bitory effect disappeared th.reafter. also, th.re was no significant difference in cellular proliferation depending on siRNA dose. Th. rate of apoptosis also increased with.silencing of th. Livin gene. In vivo, th. tumor size significantly decreased after Livin- siRNA injection at 20 umol/L concentration （P = 0.03）. Th.re were no significant body weigh. ch.nges of mice after siRNA injection. h.stologic examination revealed no significant toxic reaction in kidney, liver and brain of mice. CONCLUSION： siRNA-mediated downregulation of Livin expression can induce apoptosis in colon cancer in vitro and in vivo, wh.ch.suggests th. possibility of new cancer th.rapeutics using siRNA.
