Evaluation of the nutritional value of Artemia nauplii for European seabass(Dicentrarchus labrax L.)larvae

Adapted European seabass(Dicentrarchus labrax L.)larvae at 25 days post-hatching(dph)with a primary weight and length of 23 mg and 9.92 mm,start the weaning up to 46 dph using the weaning micro-diet(54%crude protein from fish meal,powder milk,and poultry egg)concurrently with Artemia enriched with fortification emulsions(0.6 g/L)of DHA selco®as a control group(DHAS)or Fish oil+20%Vitamin C(FOVC),or Fish oil+20%Vitamin E(FOVE),or Fish oil+10%Vit.C+10%Vit.E(FOCE),or Fish oil only(FO).At 46 dph,groups of larvae fed enriched Artemia with DHAS and FOVE exhibited the highest final body weight,weight gain,average daily gain,specific growth rate,feed intake,protein efficiency ratio,and survival%as well as the lowest feed conversion ***,larvae in FOVC displayed the lowest final body weight,total length,weight gain,average daily gain,specific growth rate,feed intake,protein efficiency ratio,and survival%as well as the highest feed conversion *** histological assessment exhibited no pathological alteration as well as an improvement in the structure with DHAS,FOVE,FOVC,and FOCE co-additives compared to *** peroxidase enzyme(GPx)recorded the highest rates(P<0.05)in groups fed Artemia supplemented with DHAS and FOVE followed by FOCE and *** the lowest record for GPx activity was noted in the FO *** conclusion,Using augmented Artemia nauplii with fish oil+vitamin E in single or in companion with vitamin C as cheap antioxidants support *** larval growth,survival,and antioxidant efficacy during the critical weaning period.

State-of-the-art review of some artificial intelligence applications in pile foundations

Geotechnical engineering deals with materials（e.g. soil and rock） that, by their very nature, exhibit varied and uncertain behavior due to the imprecise physical processes associated with the formation of these materials. Modeling the behavior of such materials in geotechnical engineering applications is complex and sometimes beyond the ability of most traditional forms of physically-based engineering methods. Artificial intelligence（AI） is becoming more popular and particularly amenable to modeling the complex behavior of most geotechnical engineering applications because it has demonstrated superior predictive ability compared to traditional methods. This paper provides state-of-the-art review of some selected AI techniques and their applications in pile foundations, and presents the salient features associated with the modeling development of these AI techniques. The paper also discusses the strength and limitations of the selected AI techniques compared to other available modeling approaches.

Evaluation of copper removal efficiency using water treatment sludge

Large quantities of sludge are produced during water treatment processes. Recently, sludge has been treated as waste and disposed of in landfills, which increases the environmental burdens and the operational cost. Therefore, sludge reuse has become a significant environmental issue. In this study, adsorption of copper ions (Cu^2+) onto calcined sludge was investigated under various operational conditions (with varying temperature, Cu^2+ initial concentration, pH, and sludge dosage). The prepared sludge material was characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. The sorption capacity of sludge was directly proportional to the initial Cu^2+ concentration and inversely proportional to the sludge dosage. The optimum operational pH and solution temperature were 6.6 and 80℃, respectively. The experimental results followed a Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, change in free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were calculated. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the sorption of copper ions onto the calcined sludge was driven by a physical adsorption process. The prepared sludge was proven to be an excellent adsorbent material for the removal of Cu^2+ from an aqueous solution under optimum conditions.

Effects of multipass friction stir processing and Mg addition on the microstructure and tensile properties of Al 1050 alloys

The effects of multipass friction stir processing(FSP)and Mg powder addition on the different microstructure parts,including the stir zone(SZ),heat-affected zone(HAZ),and thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)of Al 1050 alloy were *** observations revealed that with the increase in the number of FSP passes,the grain size of the SZ decreased in the non-composite and composite samples,whereas that of the TMAZ and HAZ increased in the non-composite ***,the addition of Mg powder resulted in considerable grain refinement,and increasing the number of the FSP passes resulted in a more uniform distribution of Al-Mg intermetallic compounds in the in-situ composite *** of the tensile test showed that the non-composite sample that underwent four passes of FSP exhibited a higher elongation percentage and a ductile fracture in comparison with those of the base metal and the composite ***,this sample exhibited a brittle fracture and a higher tensile strength in comparison with the base metal and the non-composite *** fabrication of composite samples resulted in a remarkable enhancement in hardness in comparison with the base metal and the non-composite samples that underwent FSP.

Comparative Effect of Propolis of Honey Bee and Some Herbal Extracts on Candida Albicans

Objective： To determine the effect of propolis on Candida albicans and to compare it with the effects of some other herbal extracts and antibiotics on this pathogenic fungi. Methods： The extracts of propolis, Thymus vulgaris, Caryophillium aromaticus, Echinophora platyloba, Allium cepa and Cinnamomum zeylanicumwere prepared and the antifungi effects of the extracts were examined on Candida albicans ATCC10231 using disc-diffusion assay and micro-broth dilution. The minimum fungicidal concentration（MFC） and minimum inhibitory concentrations（MIC） as well as inhibition zone were evaluated and the anti fungi effects of herbal extracts were compared with amphotricin B and nystatin at the times of 24, 48 and 72 h. Data analysis was performed using t test. Results： Obtained results showed that propolis extract with MIC90 and MFC equal to 39 and 65 μg/mL, respectively, possess the highest antifungal activity when compared with other studied extracts. The extracts of Allium cepa and Thymus vulgaris, with MFC of 169 and 137 μg/mL, respectively, showed the lowest effects on the fungi. Also nystatin and amphotricin B yielded better effects on the tested fungi compared with the effects of all studied extracts on Candida albicans. Conclusions： Propolis extract is effective in controlling Candida albicans. However, the issue requires further investigation on samples in animals and performing toxicological examinations.

Progressive collapse resisting capacity of reinforced concrete load bearing wall structures

Reinforced concrete(RC) load bearing wall is widely used in high-rise and mid-rise buildings. Due to the number of walls in plan and reduction in lateral force portion, this system is not only stronger against earthquakes, but also more economical. The effect of progressive collapse caused by removal of load bearing elements, in various positions in plan and stories of the RC load bearing wall system was evaluated by nonlinear dynamic and static analyses. For this purpose, three-dimensional model of 10-story structure was selected. The analysis results indicated stability, strength and stiffness of the RC load-bearing wall system against progressive collapse. It was observed that the most critical condition for removal of load bearing walls was the instantaneous removal of the surrounding walls located at the corners of the building where the sections of the load bearing elements were changed. In this case, the maximum vertical displacement was limited to 6.3 mm and the structure failed after applying the load of 10 times the axial load bored by removed elements. Comparison between the results of the nonlinear dynamic and static analyses demonstrated that the "load factor" parameter was a reasonable criterion to evaluate the progressive collapse potential of the structure.

Yin and Yang of Body Composition Assessment

Objectve：To define if such crucial body composition parameters like body density（Db） and body surface area（BSA） could be considered in the frame of yin-yang concept,i.e.,one of the most popular in conventional biomedical science theories of Chinese ***：Standardized Eurofit Pysical Fitness Test Battery reports of 715 junior school children have been evaluated for association of their body composition parameters with corresponding motoric fitness test *** for BSA and Db calculation included height,weight,and skin-fold thickness values of the ***：Correlative analysis of major physical fitness parameters,obtained from 715 junior school children,demonstrated that participants with high BSA/Db ratio had better yang-featured anaerobic performance,whereas those with low BSA/Db ratio presented with better yin-featured aerobic *** result coincided with proposed suggestions to treat BSA as external yang component and Db as internal yin component of body *** confidence intervals for BSA/ Db ratio ranged between 1.073-1.15,which can be accepted as optimal for junior school children yang/yin ratio of body ***：Easily accessible BSA and Db can provide specialists with useful preliminary information for generating reasonable exercise and nutritional programs.

Evaluation of the ECMWF Precipitation Product over Various Regions of Iran

Easy access to accurate and reliable climate data is a crucial concern in hydrological *** this regard,gridded climate data have recently been provided as an alternative to observational ***,those data should be first evaluated and corrected to guarantee their validity and *** study offered a new approach to assess the ECMWF gridded precipitation data based on some indicators,including correlation coefficient(CC),normalized root-mean-square error(NRMSE),and absolute error(AE)in daily and monthly intervals(2007-2017)across different climatic and geographical areas of ***,an artificial neural network(ANN)model was utilized to correct the ECMWF precipitation *** to the results,NRMSE was less than 2(in 93%of stations)and 5(in63%of stations)on monthly and daily scales,***,CC was above 0.6 in 58%and 94%of stations on daily and monthly scales,*** AE values were from-0.5 to 0.5,in 80%(daily scale)and 50%(monthly scale)of *** corrected the ECMWF precipitation product by ANN,the number of stations with NRMSE less than 5 increased from 63%to 74%on the daily timescale,whereas the number of stations with NRMSE less than 2 reached 95%from 93%on the monthly *** results also showed that the number of stations with CC more than 0.6 increased from 58%to 87%on the daily timescale.

Nano-tribological behavior of graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced magnesium matrix nanocomposites

The corrosion resistance and wear resistance of metallic biomaterials are critically important for orthopedic hard-tissue replacement applications because the lack of such properties not only adversely affects their mechanical integrity but also allows the release of wear debris into the human *** this study,the potential of zirconium(Zr)as an alloying element and graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs)as a nano-reinforcement material were investigated in relation to improving the tribological performance of pure magnesium(Mg).The GNPs-reinforced Mg matrix nanocomposites(MNCs)were fabricated using powder *** indicate that additions of 0.5 wt.%Zr and0.1 wt.%GNPs to Mg matrices significantly improved the wear resistance by 89%and 92%at 200μN load,60%and 80%at 100μN load,and 94%and 93%at 50μN load,respectively,as compared to the wear resistance of pure *** wear depth and coefficient of friction of the MNC containing 0.5 wt.%Zr and 0.1 wt.%GNPs(Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC)were considerably reduced as compared to pure Mg and Mg0.5 *** results demonstrate that the Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC is promising for orthopedic applications in relation to its excellent tribological performance.

Angiographic characteristics of central serous chorioretinopathy in an Egyptian population

· AIM: To describe and analyze the demographic characteristics and to determine the angiographic features of acute central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR) in an Egyptian population. ·METHODS: A series of consecutive patients presenting with acute idiopathic CSCR to Mansoura Ophthalmology Center Mansoura University who underwent fluorescein angiography (FA) within a 3 -year -period (between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2009) was retrospectively studied. Patient demographics and angiographic features were studied. Results were compared to those of other Western and Asian populations. ·RESULTS: Fluorescein angiograms of 86 patients were analyzed. 91% were males. The age range of patients was 24 -49 years, with a mean age of (38±6) years. The right eye was the presenting eye in 47% of patients. Eighty seven percent of eyes showed delayed choroidal filling. Thirty -five percent of patients had more than one point of leakage. The macula was the most common site of fluorescein leakage seen in 79% of patients. Peripheral leakage was seen in 14% of patients while peripapillary leakage was seen in 12% of patients. The inkblot leakage pattern was found in 53% of patients. The presenting eye had RPE atrophic changes in 84% of cases. The other eye was assessed in 44 patients (51%). Fifty-five percent of them had signs of RPE atrophic changes. ·CONCLUSION: In the Egyptian population, CSCR is seen at younger age with higher male -to -female ratio and more frequent smokestack leaks than other populations. Despite younger age group, this series of patient showed higher frequency of bilateral and multifocal disease compared to other studies. Roles of psychological stress and choroidal ischemia in pathogenesis of CSCR need further evaluation. ·
