Salinity-alkalinity is incipient abiotic stress that impairs plant growth and development.Rice(Oryza sativa)is a major food crop greatly affected by soil salinity and alkalinity,requiring tolerant varieties in the saline-alkali prone areas.Understanding the molecular and physiological mechanisms of saline-alkali tolerance paves the base for improving saline-alkali tolerance in rice and leads to progress in breeding.This review illustrated the physiological consequences,and molecular mechanisms especially signaling and function of regulating genes for saline-alkali tolerance in rice plants.We also discussed QTLs regarding saline-alkali tolerance accordingly and ways of deployment for improvement.More efforts are needed to identify and utilize the identified QTLs for saline-alkali tolerance in rice.

The Eocene Kuldana Formation(KF)in the Yadgar area of Pakistan,comprises a diverse range of sedimentary facies,including variegated red beds of shales,mudstones,and sandstones,as well as interbedded limestone and marl.In this study,we conducted an integrated micropaleontological,sedimentological,mineralogical,and geochemical investigation to determine the depositional setting,biochronology,provenance,and paleoclimate of the KF.The study identified six lithofacies and six microfacies,which indicate a variety of environments ranging from floodplains and channels to the margins and shallow marine settings.The nannofossil biostratigraphy places the KF in the Early Eocene,more precisely the NP10 zone(Ypresian),and the fossil zone of benthic foraminifera classifies the study section as the Shallow Benthic Zone SBZ-8(Middle Ilerdian 2).In terms of petrography,the KF sandstone was classified as litharenite and feldspathic litharenite,while the QtFL diagram suggests a recycled orogen.Geochemical proxies indicate an oxidizing environment,a high-to-low regular sedimentation rate,moderate-to-intense chemical weathering in the source region,and a warm-humid to dry climate during the deposition of KF.Overall,the findings suggest that the deposition of KF marks the end of Neo-Tethys due to the Early Eocene Indian–Kohistan collision and that the uplifting of the Himalayas provided the source for the deposition of KF in the foreland basin.The study provides new insights into the depositional environment,biochronology,provenance,and paleoclimate of KF,and highlights the potential for red beds as reliable indicators of oxygenation levels in proximity to mineral deposits.

Drought is one of the major abiotic threat to rice production in the context of climate change.Super Basmati is an elite,fine grain basmati rice variety grown in Punjab,Pakistan.Due to drought sensitive in nature,its yield has been facing an alarming situation in production because of gradual decrease in irrigated water for a couple of years.Three reported novel QTLs for drought tolerance were selected for incorporation into Super Basmati by employing marker assisted selection strategy.IR55419-04 with novel QTLs was used as a donor parent.Foreground selection was performed by applying PCR based QTL linked SSR markers followed by recombinant selection by using 2-4 flanking markers.Background selection was exercised by using polymorphic SSR markers for maximum genome recovery of the Super Basmati.The individuals homozygous at the target QTLs and with maximum background of Super Basmati at the rest of the non-target genome was selected for evaluation of drought tolerance.Under drought stress conditions,the yields of all introgressed lines(ILs)were 44.2%-125.7%higher than recurrent parent.Six superior ILs that are drought tolerant and very similar to Super Basmati in terms of agronomic and grain quality traits are marked for release as drought-tolerant varieties in arid regions or for use in breeding programs of high grain quality and drought-tolerant parents.

A New Hybrid SARFIMA-ANN Model for Tourism Forecasting

Many countries developed and increased greenery in their country sights to attract international tourists.This planning is now significantly contributing to their economy.The next task is to facilitate the tourists by sufficient arrangements and providing a green and clean environment;it is only possible if an upcoming number of tourists’arrivals are accurately predicted.But accurate prediction is not easy as empirical evidence shows that the tourists’arrival data often contains linear,nonlinear,and seasonal patterns.The traditional model,like the seasonal autoregressive fractional integrated moving average(SARFIMA),handles seasonal trends with seasonality.In contrast,the artificial neural network(ANN)model deals better with nonlinear time series.To get a better forecasting result,this study combines the merits of the SARFIMA and the ANN models and the purpose of the hybrid SARFIMA-ANN model.Then,we have used the proposed model to predict the tourists’arrival inNew Zealand,Australia,and London.Empirical results showed that the proposed hybrid model outperforms in predicting tourists’arrival compared to the traditional SARFIMA and ANN models.Moreover,these results can be generalized to predict tourists’arrival in any country or region with a complicated data pattern.

Objective:To study the screening of essential oils of Skimmia laureola leaves(SLO)for acute toxicity,antinociceptive,antipyretic and anticonvulsant activities in various animal models.Methods:SLO were extracted using modified Clevenger type apparatus.Acute toxicity test was used in mice to observe its safety level.Antinociceptive activity of SLO was evaluated in acetic acid induced writhing and hot plate tests.Yeast induced hyperthermic mice and pentylenetetrazole induced convulsive mice were used for the assessment of its antipyretic and anticonvulsant profile respectively.Results:Substantial safety was observed for SLO in acute toxicity test.SLO showed a high significant activity in acetic acid induced writhing test in a dose dependent manner with maximum pain attenuation of 68.48%at 200 mg/kg i.p.However,it did not produce any relief in thermal induced pain at test doses.When challenged against pyrexia evoked by yeast,SLO manifested marked amelioration in hyperthermic mice,dose dependently.Maximum anti-hyperthermic activity(75%)was observed at 200 mg/kg i.***.after 4 h of drug administration.Nevertheless,SLO had no effect on seizures control and mortality caused by pentylenetetrazole.Conclusions:In vivo studies of SLO showed prominent antinociceptive and antipyretic activities with ample safety profile and thus provided pharmacological base for the traditional uses of the plant in various painful conditions and pyrexia.Additional detail studies are required to ascertain its clinical application.

The mass concentrations of eighteen airborne samples collected from Lahore (Pakistan) are found in the range from 595 to 3027μg/m3with average value of 1130 μg/m3. Most of these values are normal and as reported in the literature for other parts of the world. The major phases identified in the samples by the X-ray powder diffraction technique are Albite (Anorthite), Calcite, Clinochlore (Chlorite), Gypsum, Illite, Quartz and Talc which have also been reported by other researchers to be present in the airborne particulates of other world locations. The average weight percentages of the phases (minerals) in the samples are respectively 15.5, 10.6, 23.7, 2.4, 19.1, 20.2, and 8.5. Some of the elements (e.g., boron, cadmium, lithium, manganese, titanium, and zinc) quantified in two samples determined using a spark-source mass spectrometer appear also to derive their origin from man-made activities. However no compound synthesized in the atmosphere is detected by the X-ray diffraction method.

本文通过不同形貌的石墨材料,研究了聚丙烯腈-丁二烯(NBR)作为锂离子电池粘结剂的电化学性能,并与商业化粘结剂聚偏氟乙烯(PVDF)进行了对比。由于NBR无定形的晶体结构和连续性的特点,使其能够更好的粘结在活性材料表面,在球型和片状石墨表面都能形成均一的具有抑制副反应和提高锂离子传输能力的保护层。实验证明,片层状石墨在以PVDF作粘结剂时,电化学性能较差。然而,以NBR作为粘结剂时,球型和片状的石墨材料在库伦效率、循环稳定性和传输动力学上都有明显的提升。此项研究证实了粘结剂和活性材料的一致性对于提高锂离子电池电化学性能的重要性。

In this article, a topological sensitivity framework for far-field detection of a diamet- rically small electromagnetic inclusion is established. The cases of single and multiple measurements of the electric far-field scattering amplitude at a fixed frequency are tak- en into account. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed theoretically in terms of its resolution and sensitivity for locating an inclusion. The stability of the framework with respect to measurement and medium noises is discussed. Moreover, the quantitative results for signal-to-noise ratio are presented. A few numerical results are presented to illustrate the detection capabilities of the proposed framework with single and multiple measurements.
