Background Asthma control in African Americans(AA)is considered more difficult to achieve than in Caucasian Americans(CA).The aim of this study was to compare asthma control over time among AA and CA children w hose asthma is managed per NAEPP(EPR-3)*** This was a one-year prospective study of children referred by their primary care physicians for better asthma care in a specialty asthma *** children received asthma care per NAEPP *** were compared between CA and AA children at baseline and then at three-month intervals for one *** Of the 345 children,ages 2-17 years(mean=6.2±4),220(63.8%)were CA and 125(36.2%)were *** were no significant differences in demographics other than greater pet ownership in CA *** baseline,AA children had significantly more visits to the Emergency Department for acute asthma symptoms(mean=2.3±3)compared to CA(1.4±23,P=0.003).There were no other significant differences in acute care utilization,asthma symptoms(mean days/month),or mean asthma control test(ACT)scores at base *** 3-6 months,in both groups,mean ACT scores,asthma symptoms and acute care utilization significantly improved(Pime in both groups was comparable except for a significantly greater decrease in ED visits in AA children compared to CA children(P=002).Conclusion Overall,improvement in asthma control during longitudinal assessment was similar between AA and CA children because of consistent use of NAEPP asthma care guidelines.

Geochemistry and Depositional Setting of Fort Munro Formation,Middle and Lower indus Basins,Pakistan

Fort Munro Formation represents the products of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in the middle and lower indus basins. The formation is exposed in the Rakhi Nala (Sulaiman Range), Bara Nala (Lakhi Range) and Naka Pabni (Southern Pab Range) areas. Major and trace elemental geochemistry and petrographic studies of the formation have been carried out to understand the facies trends in the middle and lower indus basins. A high amount of acid-insoluble fraction, Ca/Mg and Mg vs. Ca/Sr ratio reveal that the formation was deposited in a shallow marine regressive environment. High amounts of clastic reflect abundant influx of terrigenous materials from the east (indian craton) and west (Bibai volcanic). High Sr content indicates that aragonite was the precursor mineral, which was transformed into stable low-Mg calcite during diagenesis. Enrichment of Cu and Zn contents in the samples of the formation implies the influence of volcanic activity and that they were incorporated into the calcite lattice in the late phase.

Biogeochemical evaluation of Nannorrhops ritchiana: A Mg-flora from Khuzdar, Balochistan, Pakistan

Nannorrhops ritchiana (Mazari Palm) is a distinctive flora growing in the Saharo-Sindian region. it is well distributed on the ultramafic soil, derived from the Bela Ophiolite in the Khuzdar District, Balochistan, Pakistan. Quantitative estimation of Ca, Mg, Fe and Ni in soil and plant ash has been carried out. The constituents of plant ash have been discussed in relation to soil chemistry, pH, climate, mobility, average abundance in plant ash and exclusion mechanism of the flora. Relationship among Ca, Mg, Fe and Ni has been established using scattergrams to evaluate the biogeochemistry of the plant. High contents of Mg and high coefficient of biological absorption allow it to be classed as Mg-flora. Both Ca and Fe appeared to be antagonistic to Mg. The metal assemblage of N. ritchiana nicely reflected the nature of the bed rock as being serpentinized ultramafic, and its corresponding soils. Good exclusion mechanism of N. ritchiana did not allow it to absorb high Ni from the soil. Relatively high concentrations of Ni in N. ritchiana from the Baran Lak area can be used to localize Ni-mineralization in the study area.; Statistical analyses, such as minimum, maximum, mean, mode, median, standard deviations, and coefficient of correlation, were also made to improve raw geochemical data and interpretations.

Background:The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutation identification is being used with increased frequency to aid in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) in those suspected with *** of this study was to identify diagnostic outcomes when CFTR mutational analysis was used in CF *** mutational analysis results were also compared with sweat chloride ***:This study was done on all patients at our institution who had CFTR mutation analysis over a sevenyear period since August ***:A total of 315 patients underwent CFTR mutational ***-one (16.2%) patients had two mutations *** them 32 had positive sweat chloride levels (≥60 mmol/L),while seven had borderline sweat chloride levels (40-59 mmol/L).An additional 70 patients (22.3%) had only one mutation *** them eight had positive sweat chloride levels,and 17 had borderline sweat chloride ***-five patients (17.5%) without CFTR mutations had either borderline (n=45) or positive (n=10) sweat chloride *** patients with a CF phenotype had negative CFTR analysis but elevated sweat chloride *** eighty-three patients (26.4%) CFTR mutational analysis was done without corresponding sweat chloride ***:Although CFTR mutation analysis has improved the diagnostic capability for CF,its use either as the first step or the only test to diagnose CFTR dysfunction should be discouraged and CF diagnostic guidelines need to be followed.

Frequency of Bcr-Abl Fusion Oncogene Splice Variants Associated with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

BCR-ABL fusion oncogene originates from the reciprocal translocation of chromosome 9 and 22 t(9;22) (q34;q11). it translates a chimeric protein, p210, characterized by constitutive activation of its tyrosine kinase, which triggers leukemogenic pathways resulting in onset of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). in CML, the classic fusion is b2a2 or b3a2 fusing exon 13 (b2) or exon 14 (b3) of BCR to exon 2 (a2) of ABL. The type of bcr/abl transcripts may be associated with different prognosis and hence useful in therapeutic plan. This study was conducted to calculate the frequency of these splice variants as the frequencies of different fusion oncogenes associated with leukaemia can vary in different geographical regions due to interplay of genetic variation in different ethnic populations, diverse environmental factors and living style. A very sensitive nested RT-PCR was established to detect BCR-ABL splice variants in CML. Sensitivity of RT-PCR assay was of the order of 10–6. Thirty CML patients were subjected to BCR-ABL analysis. Out of 30 Pakistani patients, 19 (64%) expressed b3a2 while 11 (36%) expressed b2a2 transcript. This shows that BCR-ABL splice variants differ in their frequencies which may have an effect on biology and implications for prognosis and management of BCR-ABL positive Leukemias.

Background and Aims:The perinatal transmission of hepatitis B virus(HBV)remains an important global health ***,a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the evidence regarding the efficacy and maternal/fetal safety of treating pregnant women with lamivudine,telbivudine(LdT),and tenofovir(TDF).Methods:A PubMed and Scopus search resulted in 1,076 records,which were reduced to 36,containing 7,717 pregnant women with chronic HBV infection and 7467 infants meeting the inclusion *** latest search was in August ***:Treatment with LdT,but not lamivudine and TDF,could significantly reduce the hepatitis B virus surface antigen-positive rate(odds ratio(OR)=0.37)in infants;it also led to higher rates of hepatitis B e antigen loss(OR=12.14),hepatitis B e antigen seroconversion(OR=8.93),and alanine aminotransferase normalization in mothers(OR=1.49).Each of these treatments was able to significantly reduce HBV DNA positivity at birth(total OR=0.19)and mother-to-child-transmission of HBV(total OR=0.15),and to cause higher rates of HBV DNA suppression in mothers(total OR=25.53).However,nucleos(t)ide analogues might also be involved in creatine kinase elevation(total OR=7.48).in contrast,no significant association was found between nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy and preterm/premature births,congenital malformation,low birth weight,and abortion or fetal/infant *** results suggested LdT's high capability of preventing ***,TDF failed to show significant associations to a reduced risk of mother-to-child-transmission,probably due to the low number of patients ***:Although using either lamivudine,LdT,orTDF could lead to more favorable maternal/fetal outcomes,LdT seemed to show more potential in resolving certain infant-and maternal-related *** studies on the safety profile of such treatments are required.

A chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CPE), consisting of 2,2'-[ (1E)- (1,2- phenylenebis (azanylylidene)] bis (methanylylidene)]bis (benzene-1,4-diol) (PBD) and multiwalled carbon nano-tubes (CNTs), was used to study the electrocatalytic oxidation of dopamine using cyclic voltamme-try, chronoamperometry, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). First, the electrochemical be-havior of the modified electrode was investigated in buffer solution. Then the diffusion coefficient, electrocatalytic rate constant, and electron-transfer coefficient for dopamine oxidation at the sur-face of the PBD-modified CNT paste electrode were determined using electrochemical approaches. it was found that under optimum conditions (pH = 7.0), the oxidation of dopamine at the surface of such an electrode occurred at about 200 mV, lower than that of an unmodified CPE. DPV of dopa-mine at the modified electrode exhibited two linear dynamic ranges, with a detection limit of 1.0 μmol/L. Finally, DPV was used successfully for the simultaneous determination of dopamine, uric acid, and folic acid at the modified electrode, and detection limits of 1.0, 1.2, and 2.7 μmol/L were obtained for dopamine, uric acid, and folic acid, respectively. This method was also used for the determination of dopamine in a pharmaceutical preparation using the standard addition method.

Biochar(BC)has gained attention for removal of toxic elements(TEs)from aqueous media;however,pristine biochar often exhibits low adsorption ***,various modification strategies in BC have been developed to improve its removal capability against *** zero-valent iron(nZVi)and iron oxides(FeOx)have been used as sorbents for TE ***,these materials are prone to agglomeration and also expensive,which make their usage limited for large-scale *** nZVi technical demerits could be resolved by the development of BC-based composite sorbents through the loading of nZVi or FeOx onto BC *** zero-valent iron modified BC(nZViBC),FeOx-modified BC(FeOxBC)have attracted attention for their capability in removing pollutants from the aqueous ***,a potential use of nZViBC and FeOxBC for TE removal from aqueous environments has not been well-realized or *** such,this article reviews:(i)the preparation and characterization of nZViBC and FeOxBC;(ii)the capacity of nZViBC and FeOxBC for TE retention in line with their physicochemical properties,and(iii)TE removal mechanisms by nZViBC and *** nZVi and FeOx in BC increases its sporptive capability of TEs due to surface modifications in morphology,functional groups,and elemental *** combined effects of BC and nZVi,FeOx or Fe salts on the sorption of TEs are complex because they are very specific to *** review identified significant opportunities for research and technol-ogy advancement of nZViBC and FeOxBC as novel and effective sorbents for the remediation of TEs contaminated water.
