Interatomic Potentials for Some Binary Oxides

Using atomistic computer simulation methods we have derived a new set of interatomic potential parameters for some binary oxides, comprising divalent transition elements (rock-salt structured) and tetravalent metals. Computational techniques based on the minimization of the crystal energy with respect to atomic coordinates have been employed. Crystal properties were calculated and compared with the experimental data to check the reliability of our potential models. Intrinsic (Schottky and Frenkel) defect energies were also calculated and compared with previous studies. There is a good agreement between these calculations, which shows that the new potential parameters are reliable and can be used with confidence for future investigations.

Objectives: To determine health promoting behaviors of university students in Jordan and factors influencing them. Design and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to recruit convenience sample (n = 525) of university students receiving education from two governmental and one private universities in Jordan. Data were collected between September 2013 and January 2014 by using Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II. Pender model provided conceptual framework to guide the study. Results: The mean score of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile of the student was at (127.87 ± 19.91). Significant differences were found between Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile mean score and the mean score of its subscales and student’s age, gender, employment status, family income, university type, and faculty type. Conclusions: These findings suggest that interventions are needed to enhance the practice of health promoting behaviours. These interventions should focus on demographic variations among university students.

Aims: To clarify the relationship between depression and glucose metabolism using sensitive measures of insulin resistance, and to assess if remission of depression results in enhanced insulin sensitivity. methods: An intervention study to quantify changes in insulin sensitivity before and after treatment of depression was carried out. Twenty six Pakistani women with newly diagnosed depression underwent euglycemic insulin clamp to measure insulin sensitivity at inclusion and again after treatment of depression 6 - 8 weeks later. Twenty-three individuals completed both tests. Results: Significant improvement of insulin sensitivity was observed following the treatment of depression. The improved insulin sensitivity remained statistically significant after controlling for confounding factors. Conclusions: This study establishes a relationship between depression and insulin resistance. It demonstrated that insulin sensitivity can be improved by treating depression.

神经源性吞咽障碍是一种常见的神经系统疾病的并发症,预后差且治疗方法有限。因此,将神经刺激的基础研究转化为临床应用成为当务之急。本文重点介绍咽腔电刺激(pharyngeal electrical stimulation,PES)技术在人类吞咽运动系统中的治疗应用,阐明咽腔电刺激调控吞咽功能的机制,通过大量研究结果证明该刺激能够增加咽部运动皮质的兴奋性,该技术在神经源性吞咽障碍已经完成和正在进行的临床研究也可窥见一斑。尽管目前的研究结果提示咽腔电刺激技术是一种具有广阔临床应用前景的神经调控干预手段,但仍需要进行更多的临床研究,以便充分地探索其潜在用途。

Hepatitis C virus is associated with Hepatitis C which can be acute or chronic. Acute hepatitis C is usually short term illness that can lead to chronic infection, while chronic hepatitis C is a chronic liver disease leading to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and even death. The mode of transmission is mainly parenteral and vertical. Hepatitis C is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and a serious public health problem, worldwide as well as in Pakistan. There is no vaccine available for hepatitis C so the only way to prevent hepatitis C is by changing behaviors which can spread the disease. Pakistan is also facing a huge burden of this disease. In Pakistan, the frequency of hepatitis C virus infection ranges from 8% - 15% in the general population with variations in different parts of the country. The general method of detecting infection with HCV is to observe the presence of antibodies to the virus. The aim of this study was to determine frequency of hepatitis C among general population and to see the increasing frequency in our part. Selection of Patients: All patients visiting outpatient clinics, Hepatitis clinic and indoor patients at Civil Hospital Karachi, Pakistan from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014 were screened for anti HCV. methods: Blood samples were collected from the patients in Red Topped vaccutainers and allowed to clot, then centrifuged and serum was screened for anti HCV by Immunochromatography (ICT) method. Results: A total of 156,990 patients were screened for anti-HCV, 23,511 (14.98%) patients were reported positive. During the year 2010, total 11,058 patients were screened for anti HCV, 1791 (16%) were positive, while in the year 2011 total 26,921 were screened and 3908 (14.5%) were positive, during the year 2012, total 23,321 were screened, 3036 (14%) were positive, in the year 2013 we screened total 40,483 patients 6070 (15%) were positive, while in 2014, total 55,484 patients were screened and 8584 were positive (15.5%). In wetland ecosystem, nitrogen along with other elements and its management is most imperative for the production of so many aquatic food, non-food and beneficial medicinal plants and for the improvement of soil and water characteristics. With great significant importance of INm (integrated nutrient management) as sources, emphasizing on management on nitrogen as a key element and its divergence, a case study was undertaken on such aquatic food crops (starch and protein-rich, most popular and remunerative) in the farmers' field of low-lying randomized block design, where, three important aquatic food crops (water chestnut (Trapa bispinosa Roxb.), makhana (Eurya/e ferox Salisb.) and water lily (Nymphaea spp.) as major factor and eleven combinations of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients as sub-factor was considered in the experiment. It revealed from the results that the production of fresh kernels or nuts of water chestnut (8.57 t ha-1), matured nut yield of makhana (3.06 t ha-1) and flower stalks of water-lily as vegetables (6.38 t ha-1) including its nutritional quality (starch, protein, sugar and minerals) was remarkably influenced with the application of both organic (neem oilcake @ 0.2 t ha-1) and inorganic sources (NPK @ 30:20:20 kg ha-1 along with spraying of NPK @ 0.5% each over crop canopy at 20 days interval after transplanting) than the other INm combinations applied to the crops. Among the crops, highest WCYE (water chestnut yield equivalence) exhibited in makhana due to its high price of popped-form in the country, which is being exported to other countries at now. Sole application of both (organic and inorganic sources) with lower range did not produce any significant outcome from the study and exhibited lower value for all the *** production of food crops, INm also greatly influenced the soil and water characterization and it was favourably reflected in this study. This paper presents a comparative analysis of different parameters such as enthalpy, moderator temperature, moderator density, flow velocity, pressure, and fuel temperature profile at the fuel pin cell level of PWR. moreover, in this paper pitches to fuel pin radius ratio are varied from 2.3 to 4. The methods and implementation strategy are such that the coupled neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analysis is executed in a fully one dimensional (1D) manner. The thermal hydraulic is based on moderator/coolant mass and enthalpy equation together with one group diffusion equation for fuel pin. modelling of fuel pin cell and subchannel is executed in two steps. First, the governing equations are derived assuming that all the parameters appearing in the equations are temperature independent. Fuel pin centerline temperature and radially averaged temperature equations are derived from Fourier laws of thermal conductivity. Finally, diffusion coefficient, fission cross-section and absorbing cross-section are evaluated with respect to the fuel pin temperature. The outcome will be helpful for further neutronics and thermal analysis of PWR. Thermal hydraulics parameter varies the maximum 30 percentage from the lowermost value.
