Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) is a Chinese national strategy which calls for cooperative economic, political and cultural exchange at the global level along the ancient Silk Road. The overwhelming natural hazards located along the belt and road bring great challenges to the success of BRI. In this framework, a 5-year international program was launched to address issues related to hazards assessment and disaster risk reduction(DRR). The first workshop of this program was held in Beijing with international experts from over 15 countries. Risk conditions on Belt and Road Countries(BRCs) have been shared and science and technology advancements on DRR have been disseminated during the workshop. Under this program, six task forces have been setup to carry out collaborative research works and three prioritized study areas have been established. This workshop announced the launching of this program which involved partners from different countries including Pakistan, Nepal, Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka and Tajikistan. The program adopted the objectives of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and United Nation Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and was implemented to assess disaster risk in BRCs and to propose suitable measures for disaster control which can be appropriate both for an individual country and for specific sites. This paper deals with the outcomes of the workshop and points out opportunities for the near future international cooperation on this matter.

Comparison of short-term and long-term performances for polymer-stabilized sand and clay

A series of tests were carried out on sulfate rich, high-plasticity clay and poorly-graded natural sand to study the effectiveness of a methylene diphenyl diisocyanate based liquid polymer soil stabilizer in improving the unconfined compressive strength （UCS） of freshly stabilized soils and aged sand specimens. The aged specimens were prepared by exposing the specimens to ultraviolet radiation, freeze-thaw, and wet-dry weathering. The polymer soil stabilizer also mitigated the swelling of the expansive clay. For clay, the observations indicated that the sequence of adding water and liquid polymer had great influence on the gained UGS of stabilized specimens. However, this was shown to be of little importance for sand. Furthermore, sand samples showed incremental gains in UCS when they were submerged in water. This increase was significant for up to 4 days of soaking in water after 4 days of ambient air curing. Conversely, the clay samples lost a large fraction of their UCS when soaked in water; however, their remaining strength was still considerable. The stabilized specimens showed acceptable endurance under weathering action, although sample yellowing due to ultraviolet radiation was evident on the surface of the specimens. Except for moisture susceptibility of the clay specimens, the results of this study suggested the liquid stabilizer could be successfully utilized to provide acceptable strength, durability and mitigated swelling.

The rotationally symmetric flow of a micropolar fluid in the presence of an infinite rotating disk has been studied numerically. The equations of motion are reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations, which in turn are solved numerically using SOR method and Simpson’s (1/3) rule. The results are calculated for different values of the parameter s (the ratio of angular velocities of disc and fluid) and the suction parameter a. Moreover, three different sets of the values of non-dimensional material constants related to micropolar behavior of the fluid have been chosen arbitrarily. The calculations have been carried out using three different grid sizes to check the accuracy of the results. The research concludes that the micropolar fluids flow resembles with that of Newtonian fluids when the material constants become close to zero. The comparison of these results is presented for possible values of the parameter s.

A Unique Conformational Behaviour of Glutamine Peptides

Trinucleotide repeat expansions (CAG) lead to increase in glutamine residues and hence increase in glutamine stretch. This leads to number of neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the conformation of poly Q of varying chain lengths has been investigated by quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics approaches. Glutamine contains amide linkage in the side chain. It is the interaction between side chain amide linkage and the peptide bond of the backbone which dictates the conformational behaviour. Some of the glutamine residues adopt phi psi values corresponding to poly-L-proline type II structure. Not more than three glutamine residues are found to have the same set of values and hence polyglutamine is adopting random coil structure. Carbonyl-carbonyl, CH-O interactions and hydrogen bond formation involving backbone and side chain amide chain linkages are found to contribute to the stability of the adopted structure. In simulation studies due to interaction of water molecules with the amide linkages the values undergo change and this leads to weakening of carbonyl-carbonyl interactions and hydrogen bonds. The conformational behaviour of polyglutamine peptides is shown to be chain length dependent and this may provide some insight regarding the aggregation behaviour of proteins containing poly Q stretch. Possibly this is the first systematic study of the conformational behaviour of polyglutamine peptides.

Single nucleotide replacing mutations in genes cause a number of diseases, but sometimes these mutations mimic other genetic mutations such as trinucleotide repeats expansions. A mutation in codon GGG→GCG results in Gly→Ala at the N-terminal of PABPN1 protein that mimics the trinucleotide repeat expansion disease called Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). Molecular dynamics simulations in water with peptide models having sequence Ac-A10-GA2GG-NHme (peptide A) and Ac-A10A3GG-NHme (peptide B) reveal an increase in the length of helical segment in peptide B. The α-helical length is found to be stable in peptide B with starting geometry of a right handed helix, while in the case peptide A, the helical length is short. The interactions of water molecules at terminals, side chain-backbone interactions and hydrogen bonds provide stability to resultant conformation. The adopted helix by the poly-Ala stretch may lead to masking some other active parts of the PABPN1 that may trigger the aggregation, decrease in degradation and/or impaired function of protein. Hence, further studies with N-terminal may be helpful to understand unclear disease mechanism.

Homeostatic relevance of vitamin D in maintaining male fertility in human: Down-regulation of oxidative stress and up-regulation of anti-oxidative defense and steroidal hormones

Objective:To evaluate correlation between the levels of vitamin D and male infertility as well as to determine the efficacy of vitamin D in improving the male fertility by up-regulating the levels of testosterone and ***: In the present study, 130 male patients (aged 25-70 years) having fertility defects were screened and 145 healthy individuals were taken as control. All human subjects were screened for 4-hydroxynonenal, isoprostane-F2α, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, vitamin D, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, testosterones, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and nitric ***: The screening analysis revealed that the levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and testosterone were lower in male infertile subjects compared to healthy subjects. Similarly, the levels of vitamin D [(17.17 ± 2.30) ng/mL] and calcium[(6.29 ± 0.31) mg/dL] were significantly lower in infertile groups compared to the normal healthy groups. Moreover, the study revealed that the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were significantly higher in healthy subjects compared to the infertile ***:Vitamin D exhibits strong relevance to male fertility by maintaining the levels of sex hormones (luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and testosterone), up-regulating the antioxidant defense (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase), and down-regulating the oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and inducible nitric oxide synthase species).

Numerical Solution for Accelerated Rotating Disk in a Viscous Fluid

The problem of a disk rotating in a viscous fluid has been investigated. The disk is accelerated with angular velocity proportional to time. Employing suitable similarity transformations the governing partial differential equations are transformed in to ordinary differential form. The resulting equations are solved numerically using SOR method and Simpson’s (1/3) rule. The results have been improved by using Richardson’s extrapolation. The effect of the non-dimensional parameter s which measures unsteadiness is observed on velocity components, skin friction coefficient and torque of the disk.

We proposed and demonstrated the generation and transmission of 10-Gbps retum-to-zero ON/OFF keying （RZ-OOK） signal using a new technique without pulse carving at transmitter. The new technique is characterized by a 3 dB built-in gain with better tolerance for chromatic dispersion in standard single mode fiber （SSMF）. Fiber Bragg grating （FBG） is used as chromatic dispersion compensating device to investigate the toler- ance of the proposed scheme. The simulation model of wavelength division multiplexing （WDM） based on OptiSystem.v.8.0 is presented. Simulation results show that there are error free transmission performance in a distance of 600 km with negligible power penalty and improved receiver sensitivity compared to conventional pulse carving approach.
