Distribution of persistent organic pollutants in aggregate fractions of a temperate forest and semi-rural soil

The fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and their interactions with aggregates of forest soils are not completely understood. Our objectives here were to quantify the distribution of different POPs in water-stable aggregate fractions and to study their influence on soil organic carbon (Corg) content. Soil samples were taken from a forest-site, Gogerddan (G) and a semi-rural site, Hazelrigg (H) in Great Britain, from 0-2 and 2-5 cm and 0-4 and 8-12 cm soil depth, respectively. POPs analyzed were PAHs, PCBs, total DDT, PBDEs and HCB. The bulk soil analysis showed that the concentration of POPs was significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in forest site G than in semi-rural site H, particularly at the surface soil levels compared to the subsurface soil depths in both sites. Total concentrations of PCBs and PAHs of both sites were positively correlated with Corg contents. POPs concentrations and Corg, Nt contents of forest site G were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in water-stable macro aggregates (>0.25, >1, >2 mm) than the micro aggregates (>0.053 mm). The POP concentrations of all aggregate fractions after normalizing to their respective Corg content were increased due higher contamination and strong sorption by Corg. These results showed a strong effect of Corg on the partitioning of organic pollutants to soil aggregate size fractions. The present study affirms the ecological significance of forest soils act as a potential sink of POPs. In summary, our results suggest that aggregate fractions may promote soil C storage and act as a potential POP sink in surface soil without increasing their concentration in the aggregate fraction of subsoil.

Changes in plant community and soil ecological indicators in response to Prosopis juliflora and Acacia mearnsii invasion and removal in two biodiversity hotspots in Southern India

Invasion of alien plant species can alter local plant diversity and ecosystem processes closely linked to soil organic carbon(SOC)and nutrient *** ecosystem processes such as microbial respiration and enzyme activity have been poorly explored under alien plant invasion and especially following invasive plant species *** studied the impact of Prosopis juliflora and Acacia mearnsii invasion and subsequent removal on local plant community composition and diversity and on soil microbial respiration and enzyme activity in two biodiversity hotspots in Southern *** of Prosopis promoted recolonisation of local vegetation as indicated by a 38% and 28% increase in species richness and ground vegetation cover,respectively,compared to an unremoved *** and Acacia removal led to a significant reduction in soil microbial biomass C(MBC),respiration,dehydrogenase and urease activity due to increased microbial respiration and N mineralisation *** metabolic quotients qCO_(2) in soil at Prosopis and Acacia removed sites indicate that MBC pools declined at a faster rate than SOC,resulting decreased MBC/SOC ratios compared to their respective removed *** and undisturbed ecosystems maintain more SOC through increased belowground and aboveground C input in the soil,resulting in a higher MBC content per unit *** results indicate that the interaction between above-and below-ground communities is a critical factor determining the structure and dynamics of local plant communities,especially in ecosystems affected by plant invasions.

Based on theWorld Health Organization(WHO),Meningitis is a severe infection of the meninges,the membranes covering the brain and spinal *** is a devastating disease and remains a significant public health *** study investigates a bacterial meningitis model through deterministic and stochastic ***-compartment population dynamics explain the concept,particularly the susceptible population,carrier,infected,and *** model predicts the nonnegative equilibrium points and reproduction number,i.e.,the Meningitis-Free Equilibrium(MFE),and Meningitis-Existing Equilibrium(MEE).For the stochastic version of the existing deterministicmodel,the twomethodologies studied are transition probabilities and non-parametric ***,positivity,boundedness,extinction,and disease persistence are studiedrigorouslywiththe helpofwell-known *** and nonstandard techniques such as EulerMaruyama,stochastic Euler,stochastic Runge Kutta,and stochastic nonstandard finite difference in the sense of delay have been presented for computational analysis of the stochastic ***,standard methods fail to restore the biological properties of the model,so the stochastic nonstandard finite difference approximation is offered as an efficient,low-cost,and independent of time step *** addition,the convergence,local,and global stability around the equilibria of the nonstandard computational method is studied by assuming the perturbation effect is *** simulations and comparison of the methods are presented to support the theoretical results and for the best visualization of results.

目的旨在描述制定及评估一项短期留学生研究和教育项目。方法研究分为项目制定与实施及评价2部分。根据1名国际学生的短期访学需求,护理学院的全球护理项目协调员和首席导师共同确定项目基本内容和团队成员。该项目学习活动考虑了该国际学生对老年人和居家临终关怀的兴趣,包括4项内容:.开展研究工作,参与教学活动,参与临床实践活动,以及特殊活动和专业发展培训课程。在为期6个月的访学结束时,对参与此次教学活动的教师、研究生及留学生进行访谈和简短问卷调查。结果通过访谈了解到3个方面的内容:通过参与该项目中获得的经验(增强了教育和研究的多样性,获得了新的全球医疗保健知识,对文化意识的自我反思和促进);项目实施的障碍和挑战(签证申请过程,英语语言障碍,缺乏公共交通设施,时间安排冲突);克服这些障碍和挑战的策略(在课程中增加文化多样性信息;与其他同学一起学习英语;使用不同的沟通技巧;在签证申请过程中与大学全球事务办公室持续合作;提供互动体验)。所有项目参与者都对该项目表示非常满意(4.67±0.50),认为对他们在科研、教学和临床实践方面的护理技能有很大影响(4.67±0.50)。结论此次项目的参与者均获得了相关经验,可用于今后的教学指导活动。国际护理专业学生需要得到帮助才能更好地适应访学环境,教师必须具有文化敏感性,了解学生的学习需求,并倡导营造适合学生学习的环境。

A GDPR Compliant Approach to Assign Risk Levels to Privacy Policies

Data privacy laws require service providers to inform their customers on how user data is gathered,used,protected,and *** General Data ProtectionRegulation(GDPR)is a legal framework that provides guidelines for collecting and processing personal information from *** providers use privacy policies to outline the ways an organization captures,retains,analyzes,and shares customers’data with other *** policies are complex and written using legal jargon;therefore,users rarely read them before accepting *** exist a number of approaches to automating the task of summarizing privacy policies and assigning risk *** of the existing approaches are not GDPR compliant and use manual annotation/labeling of the privacy text to assign risk level,which is time-consuming and *** present a framework that helps users see not only data practice policy compliance with GDPR but also the risk levels to privacy associated with accepting that *** main contribution of our approach is eliminating the overhead cost of manual annotation by using the most frequent words in each category to create word-bags,which are used with Regular Expressions and Pointwise Mutual Information scores to assign risk levels that comply with the GDPR guidelines for data *** have also developed a web-based application to graphically display risk level reports for any given online privacy *** show that our approach is not only consistent with GDPR but performs better than existing approaches by successfully assigning risk levels with 95.1%accuracy after assigning data practice categories with an accuracy rate of 79%.

Energy harvesting has been recognized as a promising technique with which to effectively reduce carbon emis-sions and electricity expenses of base ***,renewable energy is inherently stochastic and inter-mittent,imposing formidable challenges on reliably satisfying users'time-varying wireless traffic *** addition,the probability distribution of the renewable energy or users’wireless traffic demand is not always fully known in *** this paper,we minimize the total energy cost of a hybrid-energy-powered cellular network by jointly optimizing the energy sharing among base stations,the battery charging and discharging rates,and the energy purchased from the grid under the constraint of a limited battery size at each base *** solving the formulated non-convex chance-constrained stochastic optimization problem,a new ambiguity set is built to characterize the uncertainties in the renewable energy and wireless traffic demands according to interval sets of the mean and *** this ambiguity set,the original optimization problem is transformed into a more tractable second-order cone programming problem by exploiting the distributionally robust optimization ***,a low-complexity distributionally robust chance-constrained energy management algo-rithm,which requires only interval sets of the mean and covariance of stochastic parameters,is *** results of extensive simulation are presented to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing methods in terms of the computational complexity,energy cost,and reliability.
