AIM: To do a randomized prospective interventional study for comparing the effects of a single subconjunctival triamcinolone acetonide(SCTA) injection to tapering topical loteprednol in patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia. METHODS: A total of 400 patients were randomized into 2 groups; Group A(200 patients) received 5 mg SCTA at the end of surgery and topical ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) with ofloxacin(0.3%) combination for 3 wk. Group B(200 patients) received tapering topical loteprednol etabonate(0.5%) along with ofloxacin(0.3%) and ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) for 3 wk. Outcomes evaluated were intraocular pressure(IOP), anterior chamber cells/flare and macular oedema postoperatively at 1, 6 and 12 ***: Baseline parameters were almost similar in both the groups. No statistical difference was seen between the preoperative and postoperative IOP values for Group A(P=0.82) and Group B(P=0.61) and postoperative IOP values in between both groups(P=0.14) at 1 wk. Incidence of cells/flare postoperative was statistically not significant(P=0.82) in both groups at all follow up visits. Postoperative macular oedema was not observed at any follow up visit. CONCLUSION: SCTA appears to be an effective alternative to prolong postoperative topical steroid use.

In the present study, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the abrasive wear behavior of Al 6061. The experiments have been conducted using central composite design in the design of experiments (DOE) on pin-on-disc type wear testing machine, against abrasive media. A second order polynomial model has been developed for the prediction of wear loss. The model was developed by response surface method (RSM). Analysis of variance technique at the 95% confidence level was applied to check the validity of the model. The effect of volume percentage of reinforcement, applied load and sliding velocity on abrasive wear behavior was analyzed in detail. To judge the efficiency and ability of the model, the comparison of predicted and experimental response values outside the design conditions was carried out. The result shows, good correspondence, implying that, empirical models derived from response surface approach can be used to describe the tribological behavior of the above composite.

Wear is a continuous process in which material is degraded with every cycle. Scientists are busy in improving the wear resistance. Approximately 75% failure in components or machine parts is due to wear. The present paper investigates experimentally the effect of orientation and normal load on alloy of copper and zinc, i.e. Brass, and calculates weight loss due to wear. To do so, a multi-orientational pin-on-disc apparatus was designed and fabricated. Experiments were carried out under normal load 05-20 N, speed 2000 rpm. Results show that the with-increasing load weight loss increases at all angular positions. The loss in weight is maximum at zero degree (horizontal position) and minimum at ninety degree (vertical position) for a particular load. Maximum wear occurs when the test specimen is held at 0° angle and minimum wear occurs when the specimen is held at 90° angle for given applied load. The circumferential distance travel is constant for all positions and for all loads but still mass loss varies.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the most common chronic liver disease globally and liver biopsy remains central to diagnosis and risk stratification(1,2).There is currently an immense unmet need to develop non-invasive biomarkers to help establish the diagnosis,disease activity,and disease severity in NAFLD in clinical practice to reduce the need for liver biopsies(3).Unable to identify patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),the clinically aggressive variant of NAFLD,or significant fibrosis readily in clinical practice presents challenges in management of patients with NAFLD and is one of the reasons why incidence of NASH related cirrhosis is rapidly ***,as there is currently no approved therapy for treatment of NASH,there are several novel therapeutics in clinical trials for treatment of ***,enrollment in these clinical trials has been challenging due to high screen failure rates with the most common reason being disqualifying liver *** non-invasive risk stratification to identify patients with suspect NASH undergoing liver biopsy for clinical trial consideration to reduce the screen failure rates will not only facilitate development of therapeutics but also ***,non-invasive and cheap biomarkers that can be readily deployed in wide clinical settings are urgently needed in clinical and research setting to mitigate the projected increase in NASH related cirrhosis.

Landsat ETM+ data and SRTM DEM data were used to delineate the geological, structural and geomorphological features in the intermontane Imphal Valley in Manipur, India. This area has simple geology, structural features and there- fore provides an ideal site to test the utility of remote sensing and GIS techniques in geological studies. The various techniques such as band ratioing, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and generation of FCC (False Colour Composite) were employed on ETM+ data. The SRTM DEM data is used in generating the west-east transects of altitude pro- files in the valley for characterization of altitude levels of the litho-units. DEM derived drainage network and relative drainage density in the basin were used in interpreting the location of fault plane in the valley. The slope and lineament maps were prepared using SRTM DEM. It suggests that entire valley is covered by very low slope (0? - 9?). Lineaments are oriented N-S, 180? while in south-east of valley the direction is largely NW-SE. The change in lineament direction suggests that the eastern side of the valley is controlled by Indonesian Island arc strike direction.

In current study toxicological profile of a commonly used herbal formulation was evaluated that is used extensively for gynecological disorders like menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, irregular menstrual cycle, pre-menstrual syndrome and post-menopausal bleeding. It was also claimed to strengthen endometrium and ovaries. Since this herbal formulation was been used by a large number of population hence there was a need to assess acute and sub-chronic toxicity. Acute oral toxicity (LD50) was observed in albino mice using standard protocols whereas sub-chronic, hematological and histopathological studies were assessed on 24 albino rabbits after giving herbal formulation for 60 days in two doses (20 and 60 mg/kg) against control groups. The outcomes of present study showed that the drug is safe up to 5000 mg/kg following acute oral toxicity test and no mortality was observed during sub chronic toxicity studies. Results of sub-chronic toxicity did not show any significant changes in biochemical, hematological and histopathological parameters. However, some indicators such as urea, creatinine, hemoglobin, and RBC count were altered, but these changes do not correlate with the histopathological results and may be associated to intra individual variations. Despite the safety of the drug in few animals, clinical trials and more investigations on a large number of animals are essentially needed to establish safety and efficacy of the herbal formulation.

Analgesic Activities of Methanol Extract of <i>Terminalia chebula</i>Fruit

Pain is a sensation which in many cases represents the only symptom for the diagnosis of several disorders. Throughout ages man has used many different remedies for pain relief, among which medicinal herbs are most common due to their efficacy and relative safety due to their natural origin. In present study methanol extract of Terminalia chebula fruit was evaluated for its analgesic effects in albino mice. The extract was prepared using whole dried powdered fruit with seeds in absolute methanol. It was then subjected to rotary evaporator under reduced pressure to get concentrated extract;different doses (300, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) were assessed for analgesic activity by tail immersion technique and acetic acid induced writhing test. Similar doses of Aspirin were used as standard drug (positive control) for comparison. Results of both tail flick method and acetic acid induced writhing test revealed that T. chebula fruit extract possessed varying degree of analgesic activity significant at 300 mg/kg and highly significant at 500 and 1000 mg/kg in comparison to control. The results were almost similar to standard drug. In acetic acid induced writhing test, maximum inhibition of writhing was observed at 1000 mg/kg where the number of writhes decreased from 14.1 to 5.2 indicating 63.1% inhibition. Above findings suggest that T. chebula fruit extract possesses significant analgesic activity in albino mice with reference to positive and negative control groups;however further studies on a large number of animals with clinical trials are required to confirm safe and effective use of this fruit extract in humans for analgesic purpose.

In this study, nanocrystalline Co-Ni-Mg ferrite powders with composition Coo.5Nio.5-xMgxFe2O4 are successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method. A systematic investigation on the structural, morphological and magnetic properties of un-doped and Mg-doped Co-Ni ferrite nanoparticles is carried out. The prepared samples are characterized using x-ray diffraction （XRD） analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, field emission scanning electron microscopy （FESEM）, and vibrating sample magnetometry （VSM）. The XRD analyses of the synthesized samples confirm the formation of single-phase cubic spinel structures with crystallite sizes in a range of - 32 nm to - 36 nm. The lat- tice constant increases with increasing Mg content. FESEM images show that the synthesized samples are homogeneous with a uniformly distributed grain. The results of IR spectroscopy analysis indicate the formation of functional groups of spinel ferrite in the co-precipitation process. By increasing Mg2- substitution, room temperature magnetic measurement shows that maximum magnetization and coercivity increase from - 57.35 emu/g to - 61.49 emu/g and - 603.26 Oe to 684.11 Oe （l Oe = 79.5775 A.m-l）, respectively. The higher values of magnetization Ms and Mr suggest that the opti- mum composition is Co0.5Ni0.4Mg0.1Fe204 that can be applied to high-density recording media and microwave devices.
