Pseudopotential-based discrete unified gas kinetic scheme for modeling multiphase fluid flows

To directly incorporate the intermolecular interaction effects into the discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme(DUGKS)for simulations of multiphase fluid flow,we developed a pseudopotential-based DUGKS by coupling the pseudopotential model that mimics the intermolecular interaction into DUGKS.Due to the flux reconstruction procedure,additional terms that break the isotropic requirements of the pseudopotential model will be introduced.To eliminate the influences of nonisotropic terms,the expression of equilibrium distribution functions is reformulated in a moment-based form.With the isotropy-preserving parameter appropriately tuned,the nonisotropic effects can be properly canceled out.The fundamental capabilities are validated by the flat interface test and the quiescent droplet test.It has been proved that the proposed pseudopotential-based DUGKS managed to produce and maintain isotropic interfaces.The isotropy-preserving property of pseudopotential-based DUGKS in transient conditions is further confirmed by the spinodal decomposition.Stability superiority of the pseudopotential-based DUGKS over the lattice Boltzmann method is also demonstrated by predicting the coexistence densities complying with the van der Waals equation of state.By directly incorporating the intermolecular interactions,the pseudopotential-based DUGKS offers a mesoscopic perspective of understanding multiphase behaviors,which could help gain fresh insights into multiphase fluid flow.

Characteristics of Mandarin Open-set Word Recognition Development among Chinese Children with Cochlear Implants

Background： Cochlear implants （Cls） can improve speech recognition for children with severe congenital hearing loss, and open-set word recognition is an important efficacy measure. This study examined Mandarin open-set word recognition development among Chinese children with Cls and normal hearing （NH）. Methods： This study included 457 children with CIs and 131 children with NH, who completed the Mandarin lexical neighborhood test. The results for children at 1-8 years alter receiving their Cls were compared to those from the children with NH using linear regression analysis and analysis of variance. Results： Recognition of disyllabic easy words, disyllabic hard words, monosyllabic easy words, and monosyllabic hard words increased with time after CI implantation. Scores for cases with implantation before 3 years old were significantly better than those for implantation after 3 years old. There were significant differences in open-set word recognition between the CI and NH groups. For implantation before 2 years, there was no significant difference in recognition at the ages of 6-7 years, compared to 3-year-old children with NH, or at the age of 10 years, compared to 6-year-old children with NH. For implantation before 3 years, there was no significant difference in recognition at the ages of 8 9 years, compared to 3-year-old children with NH, or at the age of 10 years, compared to 6-year-old children with NH. For implantation after 3 years, there was a significant difference in recognition at the age of 13 years, compared to 3-year-old children with NH. Conclusions： Mandarin open-set word recognition increased with time after CI implantation, and the age at implantation had a significant effect on long-term speech recognition. Chinese children with Cls had delayed but similar development of recognition, compared to norrnal children. Early CI implantation can shorten the gap between children with Cls and normal children.

Equilibrium mercury and lead isotope fractionation caused by nuclear volume effects in crystals

To investigate equilibrium mercury(Hg)and lead(Pb)isotope fractionation caused by the nuclear volume effect(NVE)in crystals,the electron densities at nuclei(i.e.,|Ψ(0)|2)for Hg-or Pb-bearing crystalline compounds were investigated by using the relativistic spin orbit zeroth-order regular approximation(ZORA)method with a three-dimensional periodic boundary condition based on the density functional theory(DFT).Many isotope fractionation factors of crystalline compounds are provided for the first time.Our results show,even at1000℃,NVE-driven Hg and Pb isotope fractionation are meaningfully large,i.e.,range from 0.12‰to 0.49‰(202Hg/^(198)Hg),from-0.20‰to 0.17‰(208Pb/^(206)Pb)and from-0.08‰to 0.06‰(207Pb/^(206) Pb)relative to Hg0 vapor and Pb0 vapor,respectively.Specifically,the fractionations range from-0.06‰to-0.20‰(208Pb/^(206)Pb)and from-0.02‰to-0.08‰(207Pb/^(206)Pb)for Pb2+-bearing species,from 0.10‰to 0.17‰(208Pb/^(206)Pb)and from 0.04‰to 0.06‰(207Pb/^(206)Pb)for Pb4+-bearing species in crystals.All calculated Hg-bearing species in crystals will enrich heavier isotope(202Hg)relative to Hg0 vapor.Meanwhile,Pb4+-bearing species enrich heavier Pb isotopes(208Pb and 207Pb)than Pb^(2+)-bearing species in crystals,which the enrichment can be up to 0.37‰(208-Pb/^(206)Pb)and 0.14‰(207Pb/^(206)Pb)at 1000℃,due to their NVEs are in opposite directions.The NVE-driven MIFs of Hg isotopes,which are compared to the Hg202-Hg198baseline,are up to-0.158‰(ΔNV199Hg),-0.024‰(ΔNV200Hg)and-0.094‰(ΔNV201Hg)relative to Hg0 vapor at5000 C.For all studied Hg-bearing species in crystals,the MIFs of two odd-mass isotopes(i.e.,ΔNV199Hg andΔNV201Hg)will be changed proportionally and their ratio(i.e.,ΔNV199Hg/ΔNV201Hg)will be a constant 1.67.The NVE can also cause mass-independent fractionations for 207Pb and 204 Pb compared to the baseline of 208Pb and 206Pb.The largest NVEdriven MIFs are 0.043‰(ΔNV207Pb)and-0.040‰(ΔNV204Pb)among all the studied species relative to Pb0 vapor at 5000 C.The magnitudes of odd-mass isotope MIF(ΔNV207Pb)and even-m

Involvement of glucose transporter 4 in ovarian development and reproductive maturation of Harmonia axyridis(Coleoptera:Coccinellidae)

Glucose is vital to embryogenesis,as are glucose transporters.Glucose transporter 4(Glut4)is one of the glucose transporters,which is involved in rapid uptake of glucose by various cells and promotes glucose homeostasis.Although energy metabolism in insect reproduction is well known,the molecular mechanism of Glut4 in insect reproduction is poorly understood.We suspect that Glut4 is involved in maintaining glucose concentrations in the ovaries and affecting vitellogenesis,which is critical for subsequent oocyte maturation and insect fertility.Harmonia axyridis(Pallas)is a model organism for genetic research and a natural enemy of insect pests.We studied the influence of the Glut4 gene on the reproduction and development of H.axyridis using RNA interference technology.Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that HaGlut4 was most highly expressed in adults.Knockdown of the HaGlut4 gene reduced the transcript levels of HaGlut4,and the weight and number of eggs produced significantly decreased.In addition,the transcript levels of vitellogenin receptor and vitellogenin in the fat bodies and the ovaries of H.axyridis decreased after the interference of Glut4,and decreased the triglyceride,fatty acid,total amino acid and adenosine triphosphate content of H.axyridis.This resulted in severe blockage of ovary development and reduction of yolk formation;there was no development of ovarioles in the developing oocytes.These changes indicate that a lack of HaGlut4 can impair ovarian development and oocyte maturation and result in decreased fecundity.

Assessment of black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens)larvae meal as a potential substitute for soybean meal on growth performance and flesh quality of grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idellus

A 90-day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of black soldier fly larvae meal(BSFLM)as a replacement for soybean meal(SM)on growth performance and flesh quality of grass carp.A total of 420grass carp(299.93±0.85 g)were randomly divided into 7 groups(triplicate)and fed 7 diets with SM substitution of 0%(SM,control),15%(BSFLM15),30%(BSFLM30),45%(BSFLM45),60%(BSFLM60),75%(BSFLM75)and 100%(BSFLM100)by BSFLM.The growth performance of grass carp in the BSFLM75 and BSFLM100 groups were significantly lower compared to other groups(P<0.05).The mid-gut villus height was the lowest in the BSFLM100 group(P<0.05).Muscle nutritional value was improved due to increased DHA(docosahexaenoic acid),EPA(eicosapentaenoic acid),total HUFA(highly unsaturated fatty acids)and glycine levels,and reached the optimum in the BSFLM100 group(P<0.05).According to the results of principal component analysis and weight analysis of muscle texture and body color,all the BSFLM diets except BSFLM15 could improve muscle texture and body color and reached the optimum level in the BSFLM100 group.Muscle drip loss and hypoxanthine content were the lowest and muscle antioxidant capacity was the highest in the BSFLM75 group,and water-and salt-soluble protein contents reached the optimum level in the BSFLM60 group(P<0.05).Dietary BSFLM significantly reduced muscle fiber area and diameter,and increased muscle fiber density and the proportion of small fiber(diameter<20μm)(P<0.05).Additionally,sarcomere lengths in the BSFLM75 and BSFLM100 groups were significantly higher than that in the SM group(P<0.05).The m RNA relative expression levels of Myo D,Myf5,My HC and FGF6b were remarkably up-regulated at an appropriate dietary BSFLM level(P<0.05).In conclusion,BSFLM could replace up to 60%SM without an adverse effect on growth performance and improve the flesh quality of grass carp.The optimum levels of dietary BSFLM were 71.0 and 69.1 g/kg diet based on the final body weight and feed conversion ratio.The flesh quality was optimal when dietary SM was

Relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to determination of wing morphs of the brown planthopper Nilaparvatalugens

Wing dimorphism is a fascinating feature of the ability of insects to adapt to environments.The brown planthopper(BPH)Nilaparvata lugens,a serious pest of rice,can switch between the long-and short-winged morphs.It has been known that environmental factors can affect the wing morph of BPH.However,it is still unclear whether the effect of environment is dependent on BPH genetic backgrounds or not.In the present study,we established the pure-bred lineages of short-and long-winged BPHs via multigenerational selection,and we found that survival and fecundity were similar between these 2 lineages.Wing morphs of the pure-bred lineages were almost fully dependent on genetics,but independent of the environmental factors,nymphal density and rice plant stage,2 key factors affecting BPH wing morphs.In the unselected BPH population,short-and longwinged morphs were produced depending on those 2 environmental factors,indicating the contribution of environment to wing morph.In the wing-selected lineages,4 developmental regulated genes of wing,NllnRI,NllnR2,NIAkt,and NIFoxo were expressed stably in the short-winged adults,but almost silenced in the long-winged adults.However,all these genes were expressed normally with a similar level in both the short-and long-winged adults in an unselected population except NlFoxo.The pure-bred lineages of long-and short-winged morphs exhibited different expression patterns of wing development-regulated genes,suggesting the genetic determination of wing morphs.Effects of environmental factors on wing morphs occurred only in the genetic mix population.

Fibroblast exosomal TFAP2C induced by chitosan oligosaccharides promotes peripheral axon regeneration via the miR-132-5p/CAMKK1 axis

Chitosan and its degradation product,oligosaccharides,have been shown to facilitate peripheral nerve regeneration.However,the underlying mechanisms are not well understood.In this study,we analyzed the protein expression profiles in sciatic nerves after injury using proteomics.A group of proteins related to exosome packaging and transport is up-regulated by chitosan oligosaccharides(COS),implying that exosomes are involved in COS-induced peripheral nerve regeneration.In fact,exosomes derived from fibroblasts(f-EXOs)treated with COS significantly promoted axon extension and regeneration.Exosomal protein identification and functional studies,revealed that TFAP2C is a key factor in neurite outgrowth induced by COS-f-EXOs.Furthermore,we showed that TFAP2C targets the pri-miRNA-132 gene and represses miR-132-5p expression in dorsal root ganglion neurons.Camkk1 is a downstream substrate of miR-132-5p that positively affects axon extension.In rats,miR-132-5p antagomir stimulates CAMKK1 expression and improves axon regeneration and functional recovery in sciatic nerves after injury.Our data reveal the mechanism for COS in axon regeneration,that is COS induce fibroblasts to produce TFAP2C-enriched EXOs,which are then transferred into axons to promote axon regeneration via miR-132-5p/CAMKK1.Moreover,these results show a new facet of fibroblasts in axon regeneration in peripheral nerves.
