Extreme Weather Disruptions and Emergency Preparedness Among Older Adults in Ohio: An Eight-County Assessment

The disproportionate risks and impacts of climate change and extreme weather on older adults are increasingly evident. While especially true in disaster-prone areas, human-caused climate change introduces an element of uncertainty even in previously identified “safe” regions such as the Midwestern United States. Using a cumulative disadvantage and vulnerability-informed framework and descriptive statistics from multiple data sources, this article provides an overview of climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and county-level characteristics, focusing on older adults living in Central Ohio. A comparative multiple-case study methodology was used to triangulate regionally representative primary and secondary data sources to examine state and county-level measures of vulnerability, emergency preparedness, and disruptions caused by extreme weather among older adults across eight counties in Central Ohio. Seventy-eight percent of older adults in the sample reported being prepared for emergencies per Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines. Older adults in Union County reported the highest rates of preparedness, while those in Fayette County reported the lowest. County-level rates of disruption of life activities by extreme weather ranged widely. Among the most rural in the region, Fayette County emerged as uniquely disadvantaged, with the lowest median income, the most vulnerable across multiple social vulnerability dimensions, and the most reported disruptions to life activities from extreme weather. County profiles offer a snapshot of existing vulnerabilities, socioeconomic conditions, special needs, preparedness, and current disruptions among older adults in the region and can inform resource mobilization across community and policy contexts.

Pearl millet(Pennisetum glaucum)is one of the major millets with high nutritional *** crop exhibits exceptional resilience to drought and high ***,the processing of pearl millet poses a significant challenge due to its high lipid content,enzyme activity,and presence of ***,it becomes imperative to enhance the quality and prolong the shelf life of pearl millet flour by employing suitable *** treatment in the food industry has long been seen as promising due to its potential to reduce microbial load,inactivate enzymes,and improve nutrient *** study aims to investigate the effects of hydrothermal treatment on the quality characteristics of pearl *** independent variables of the study were soaking temperature(35,45,55℃),soaking time(2,3,4 h),and steaming time(5,10,15 min).Treatment conditions had a statistically significant effect on nutrient *** antinutrients like tannins and phytates were reduced by 0.99% to 5.94% and 0.36% to 6.00%,respectively,after the *** activity decreased significantly up to 10% with the treatment *** findings of this study could potentially encourage the use of pearl millet flour in the production of various food items and promote the application of hydrothermal treatment in the field of food processing.

BACKGROUND We report a case of eye-penetrating injury in which a massive silicone oil migration into the patient’s subconjunctival space and orbit occurred after *** SUMMARY A 30-year-old male patient sought medical attention at Ganzhou People’s Hospital after experiencing pain and vision loss in his left eye due to a nail wound on December 9,*** of penetrating injury caused by magnetic foreign body retention in the left eye and hospitalization for *** December 9,2023,pars plana vitrectomy was performed on the left eye for intraocular foreign body removal,abnormal crystal extraction,retinal *** to the discovery of retinal detachment at the posterior pole during surgery,silicone oil was injected to fill the vitreous body,following which upper conjunctival bubble-like swelling was *** orbital computed tomography(CT)review indicated migration of silicone oil to the subconjunctival space and orbit through a self-permeable *** December 18,2023,the patient sought treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University,*** patient presented with a pronounced foreign body sensation following left eye *** December 20,2023,the foreign body was removed from the left eye frame and an intraocular examination was *** posterior scleral tear had closed,leading to termination of the surgical procedure following supplementary laser treatment around the *** patient reported a significant reduction in ocular surface symptoms just one day after ***,a notable decrease in the migration of silicone oil was observed in orbital CT *** The timing of silicone oil injection for an eye-penetrating injury should be carefully evaluated to avoid the possibility of silicone oil migration.

Ocean wave directional spectrum estimation using spatio-temporal array of acoustic ranging and current measurement

An approach to estimate ocean wave directional spectrum using spatio-temporal array of acoustic ranging and current measurement is proposed,and the 5-beam acoustic Doppler current profiler(ADCP)constructs a spatio-temporal array of acoustic ocean surface elevation tracking and acoustic Doppler current velocity measuring for directional wave *** on the linear wave theory and the space-time equivalence principle,the time-space transfer function applicable to the spatio-temporal array is proposed,and then the time delay term is compensated in the calculation of the covariance *** method can reduce the error of the directional spectrum *** results show that for the low signal-to-noise ratio from 0 dB to 5 dB,compared with the 4-beam synchronous array method,this method has a smaller root-mean-square error of the peak estimation of the directional *** field test shows that,compared with the 4-beam synchronous array method,the 5-beam spatio-temporal array method improves the kurtosis index of the directional spectrum from 2.31 to 2.80,and the correlation coefficient between the peak wave direction results of the ADCP and the buoy is increased from 0.80 to 0.83 in mild wave ***,the spatio-temporal array method can increase the degree of freedom of wave measurement,reduce the minimum aperture of the array,and increase the upper cut-off frequency of the estimable directional spectrum.

Detection of a temporal salient object benefits from visual stimulus-specific adaptation in avian midbrain inhibitory nucleus

Food and predators are the most noteworthy objects for the basic survival of wild animals,and both are often deviant in both spatial and temporal domains and quickly attract an animal’s *** stimulus-specific adaptation(SSA)is considered a potential neural basis of salient sound detection in the temporal domain,related research on visual SSA is limited and its relationship with temporal saliency is *** avian nucleus isthmi pars magnocellularis(Imc),which is central to midbrain selective attention network,is an ideal site to investigate the neural correlate of visual SSA and detection of a salient object in the time ***,the constant order paradigm was applied to explore the visual SSA in the Imc of *** results showed that the firing rates of Imc neurons gradually decrease with repetitions of motion in the same direction,but recover when a motion in a deviant direction is presented,implying visual SSA to the direction of a moving ***,enhanced response for an object moving in other directions that were not presented ever in the paradigm is also *** verify the neural mechanism underlying these phenomena,we introduced a neural computation model involving a recoverable synaptic change with a“center-surround”pattern to reproduce the visual SSA and temporal saliency for the moving *** results suggest that the Imc produces visual SSA to motion direction,allowing temporal salient object detection,which may facilitate the detection of the sudden appearance of a predator.

Physiological Mechanism of Exogenous Selenium in Alleviating Mercury Stress on Pakchoi(Brassica campestris L.)

The objective of this study was to explain the physiological mechanisms through which Na_(2)SeO_(3) mitigates the growth and developmental inhibition of pakchoi under HgCl_(2)*** results showed that treatment with HgCl_(2)(40 mg L^(−1))led to reduced biomass,dwarfing,root shortening,and root tip necrosis in *** to control(CK),the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and peroxidase(POD)in Hg treatment increased,and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA)also dramatically increased,which negatively impacted the growth of *** concentrations of Na_(2)SeO_(3)(0.2 mg L^(−1))significantly increased the content of soluble sugars compared with control,while chlorophyll,soluble proteins,free amino acids,and vitamin C had no significant *** results of the mixed treatments with HgCl_(2)and Na_(2)SeO_(3) suggested that selenium may be able to reduce the toxicity of mercury in *** biomass,plant height,root length,chlorophyll content,soluble protein,other physiological indicators,and proline showed significant increases compared with the HgCl_(2)***,the MDA content and mercury accumulation in pakchoi *** results revealed the antagonistic effects of selenium and mercury in ***,a theoretical basis for studying pakchoi’s mercuryexcreted and selenium-rich cultivation technology was provided.

Enhanced detection algorithm for apple bruises using structured light imaging

Bruising reduces the edibility and marketability of fresh apples,inevitably causing economic losses for the apple ***,bruises lack obvious visual symptoms,which makes it challenging to detect them using imaging techniques with uniform or diffuse *** study employed the structured light imaging(SLI)technique to detect apple ***,the grayscale reflection images were captured under phase-shifted sinusoidal illumination at three different wavelengths(600,650,and 700 nm)and six different spatial frequencies(0.05,0.10,0.15,0.20,0.25,and 0.30 cycles mm−1).Next,the grayscale reflectance images were demodulated to produce direct component(DC)images representing uniform diffuse illumination and amplitude component(AC)images revealing ***,by quantifying the contrast between bruised regions and sound regions in all AC images,it was found that bruises exhibited the optimal contrast when subjected to sinusoidal illumination at a wavelength of 700 nm and a spatial frequency of 0.25 mm−*** the AC image with optimal contrast,the developed h-domes segmentation algorithm to accurately segment the location and range of the bruised ***,the algorithm successfully accomplished the task of segmenting central bruised regions while addressing the challenge of segmenting edge bruised regions complicated by *** average Intersection over Union(IoU)values for the three types of bruises were 0.9422,0.9231,and 0.9183,*** result demonstrated that the combination of SLI and the h-domes segmentation algorithm was a viable approach for the effective detection of fresh apple bruises.
