Usefulness of the epicardial fat tissue thickness as a diagnostic criterion for geriatric patients with metabolic syndrome

Objective To evaluate the epicardial fat tissue thickness （EFTT） as a diagnostic criterion for geriatric patients with metabolic syn- drome （MetS）. Methods Sixty geriatric patients over 65 years of age were recruited for the study. Patients were divided into two groups： Group 1 （n = 30） consisted of patients with MetS; Group 2 （n = 30） consisted of patients without MetS. Echocardiography was used to measure EFTT in all patients, and blood samples were analyzed for biochemical parameters. Results Compared to Group 2, EFTT levels of Group 1 were statistically higher （P 〈 0.05）. In a binary logistic regression analysis, EFTT levels served as the independent factor for meta- bolic syndrome 03 = 17.35, SE = 4.93, Wald = 12.36, P 〈 0.001）. Receivers operating characteristic Curve （ROC-curve） analysis revealed that EFTT predicted MetS with 96.7% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity above the level of 7.3 mm [area under the curve = 0.969; 95% con- fidence interval （CI）： 0.928-1.00]. Conclusions The present study demonstrated that serum EFTT levels were higher in geriatric patients with MetS and can therefore be used as a diagnostic criterion for MetS.

Investigation of the Effect of Rosmarinic Acid on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Gonadal Toxicity

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of rosmarinic acid against gonadal toxicity caused by cyclophosphamide, an important anticancer drug. A total of 28 rats were divided into 4 groups, with 7 animals in each group. The groups were created as follows;Group 1 (control) (n = 7): Subjects received only 1 ml of 0.9% saline solution per day intraperitoneally for 14 days. Group 2 (Rosmarinic Acid) (n = 7): The subjects were given 20 mg/kg Rosmarinic acid intraperitoneally for 14 days. Group 3 (Cyclophosphamide) (n = 7): Only 1 ml of 0.9% saline solution was administered intraperitoneally to the subjects for the first 7 days. Cyclophosphamide 20 mg/kg per day was administered intraperitoneally for the last 7 days (from the 8th day). Group 4 (Rosmarinic Acid + Cyclophosphamide) (n = 7): The subjects were given 20 mg/kg Rosmarinic acid daily intraperitoneally for 14 days. From the 8th day of the experiment to the end of the experiment (last 7 days of the experiment), 20 mg/kg cyclophosphamide was given intraperitoneally daily. At the end of the experiment, body weights of all rats were measured first. Afterwards, the weights of testicular tissue samples were measured and the averages of the weights were taken. Routine tissue follows up was performed on the testicular tissues taken. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was applied to tissue sections of 5 μm thickness. As a result of the statistical analysis, it was determined that cyclophosmadine decreased body and testicular weight, but rosmarinic acid had a protective effect on the contrary. Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) is a chronic disease with significant negative impact on quality of life of patients. The direct and indirect costs of the disease can be substantial both for the health care system and society. The aim of this research is to estimate the cost of mild, moderate and severe CSU in Turkey and to forecast the cost of the disease from the payer (Social Security Institution—SSI) perspective. Expert opinions with Delphi technique were used in order to determine the cost items and their frequency. A questionnaire was designed to outline resources used in the out-patient, inpatient and emergency care episodes and was answered by dermatologists followed by a consensus meeting. Unit costs were calculated from the price list of the SSI. The annual total cost of treating the disease to the SSI was estimated as 262,111,978TL (94,417,870€) comprising 0.06% of the total healthcare budget in 2013. Since there is limited information about the cost of CSU in Turkey, the methodology and results of this study are unique and very important.

An ongoing pregnancy after hysteroscopy during the implantation phase. The risk of a properly performed hysteroscopy in the implantation phase of an unrecognized pregnancy may be less than expected.
