Phytochemical screening and antibacterial activities of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina extracts on some selected enteric isolates

Background:This research focuses on herbal medicine,an ancient healthcare practice,exploring the antibacterial attributes of fresh and dried leaf extracts from Momordica charantia(commonly known as Bitter melon)and Vernonia amygdalina(Bitter leaf).The study specifically investigates their effects on different bacterial strains associated with ***:Four enteric bacterial isolates-Klebsiella pneumoniae,Salmonella typhi,Escherichia coli,and Proteus mirabilis-were obtained from the Medical Laboratory Unit at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilishan-Remo,Ogun *** screening and antibacterial testing were conducted using standard biochemical techniques and the Punch-hole agar diffusion method,***:Qualitative phytochemical screening of the plant extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids,glycosides,and saponin in both plants,excluding *** were identified only in Vernonia *** these phytochemicals,neither plant displayed inhibitory effects on the tested bacterial isolates(Escherichia coli,Proteus mirabilis,Klebsiella pneumoniae,and Salmonella typhi)when tested individually or in ***,combining the fresh and dried leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina with a standard drug resulted in smaller mean zone diameters of inhibition(Escherichia coli range:14 mm–16 mm,Proteus mirabilis range:31 mm–35 mm,Klebsiella pneumoniae range:13 mm–22 mm,and Salmonella typhi range:35 mm–38 mm)compared to the drug tested alone(16 mm–45 mm).Conclusion:Despite previous indications of antibacterial properties in various extracts of *** and *** leaves,our study presents contradictory results,prompting the need for further investigation despite the presence of significant phytochemicals.

Background:Formaldehyde is a chemical substance used to preserve the biochemical and physiological components of a tissue by preventing autolysis and putrefaction,leaving the tissue in a life-like ***:This study aims to assess the effect of formalin concentrations on the histochemical staining in liver,kidneys and lungs of Wistar ***:A total of ten(10)Wistar rats were purchased and allowed to acclimatize for a period of 2 weeks in plastic cages with iron netting at the Animal House facility,Babcock *** animals were placed on standard rat feeds and water *** rats were randomly sacrificed by cervical dislocation,following mild anaesthesia using chloroform *** histological examination,the liver,lungs,and kidneys of Wistar rats were removed and preserved in neutral buffered formalin at 2%,4%,6%,8%,and 10%*** were stained in Haematoxylin and Eosin(Vector Laboratories,***,US).The quality of the nuclei,cytoplasm and cell membrane were graded on a scale of 1(poor)to 5(excellent).Results:Six percent(6%)formalin was observed to produce excellent results in liver tissues with a total grade of sixteen(16).10%formalin produced excellent results in lung tissues with a total grade or nineteen(19).Interestingly,2%,6%and 10%formalin concentrations produced excellently results in kidney tissues with the highest total grade fourteen(14).Conclusion:This study concludes that 6%formalin produced better section and staining qualities more than the commonly used 10%formalin according to the observations from the stained *** implies that the concentration of formalin affects the histochemical staining in liver,kidneys and lungs of Wistar rats.

Osteoporosis is a common bone disease in women worldwide, leading to decreased bone density and an accelerated risk of fractures. The causes of osteoporosis in women include age (senile osteoporosis), menopause-associated hormonal changes, deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D, genetics, lifestyle factors, medical conditions, and some type of medications. The consequences of osteoporosis are colossal, consisting of fractures, decreased quality of life, psychological impacts, and economic burden. To effectively control the menace of osteoporosis in women, numerous strategies are advocated. Adequate calcium and vitamin D consumption through diet or supplements is vital. Regular weight-bearing activities and strength training that promote bone density. Maintaining a healthy life-style through avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol in-take and maintaining a wholesome body weight is essential. Hormone replacement therapy and some medications may be recommended in certain cases. Early detection through regular bone density and blood tests is crucial to lowering its impact. Creating a supportive network through educational programs and resources fosters awareness and empowerment. By engaging these strategies, women can be empowered to combat osteoporosis, reduce fracture risk, and build stronger bones for their overall well-being.

Prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection and associated risk factors among adult females infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Ogun State,Nigeria

Background:Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa,including Nigeria,and is frequently observed in individuals co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Objective:This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of serological markers for hepatitis B virus and identify the associated risk factors among women with HIV undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART)in Ogun State,***:Ethical approval was obtained from the Babcock University Health Research Ethics Committee(BUHREC)to recruit a total of 110 adult women infected with HIV,receiving treatment at the HIV clinics of Babcock University Teaching Hospital(BUTH)in Ilishan-Remo and General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode,both located in Ogun State,*** participants’HIV status were confirmed using three rapid diagnostic kits:Determine(Abbott Laboratories,Tokyo,Japan),Unigold HIV(Trinity Biotech Plc Bray,***,Ireland),and 1/2 Stat Pak(Abbott Laboratories,Tokyo,Japan)(Chembio Diagnostic Systems,New York,USA).Additionally,an HBV 5 in 1 Panel manufactured by Innovation Biotechnology Co.,Ltd in Beijing,China,was employed to detect HBV markers qualitatively in serum ***:Out of the 110 subjects that voluntarily participated in the study,4(3.6%)tested positive for HBsAg,2(1.8%)tested positive for HBsAb,81(73.6%)tested positive for HBeAg,3(2.7%)tested positive for HBeAb,and 65(59.1%)tested positive for *** was no significant correlation between the occurrence of HBsAg and the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants(P>0.05).Various risk factors were identified,including lack of knowledge about HBV,absence of HBV vaccination history,history of blood transfusion,organ transplant,and engaging in unprotected sex,among ***:The findings highlight the presence of HBV infection among HIV-positive women undergoing HAART in Ogun State,Nigeria,particularly within the age groups of 18–25 years and 26–30 *** results emphasize the n

Understanding the determinants of household cooking-fuel choice in sub-Saharan Africa:evidence from Nigeria

Overreliance on traditional cooking fuels by agricultural households poses a significant obstacle to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 by 2030 in *** the emerging recognition of remittances as a crucial factor influencing cooking-fuel choices in the energy-transition literature,there is a paucity of studies examining this influence in *** data from 4400 agricultural households sourced from the fourth wave of the Nigerian Living Standard Measurement Survey data sets,this study examined the influence of remittances on cooking-fuel choices,among other factors in *** descriptive statistics and the multinomial logit regression model,the analysis reveals that traditional cooking fuels,including wood,crop residue and animal dung,continue to dominate the cooking-fuel *** empirical result of the multinomial logit model showed that households that receive remittances are more likely to use modern cooking ***,wealthier,more educated households with access to electricity are more likely to use modern and transitional cooking fuels than traditional cooking *** on the findings,the study suggests the incentivization of remittances into the country through the reduction in associated transaction costs and accelerated public infrastructural investment in affordable electricity and good road networks to connect rural areas to gas-supply networks to drive the transition to modern cooking ***,educational and awareness campaigns about the health risks associated with traditional cooking energy,particularly indoor air pollution,should be encouraged,especially in rural areas.
