Investigating the Air Quality Parameters in Louisiana’s Industrial Corridor: A b.ton Rouge Case Study

In a local context, sustainab.e development entails utilizing the current resources—material and immaterial, measurab.e and immeasurab.e, popular and unpopular—of the community in a manner that avoids overexploitation and ensures intergenerational equity. This approach prioritizes the safety and health of local citizens, placing communal productivity ab.ve corporate profitab.lity. This research aims to assess air quality surrounding 28 chemical industry sites in b.ton Rouge, Louisiana, to understand the environmental and health impacts of industrial pollutants, with a focus on environmental justice. Air quality pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and SO2, were monitored for 75 days during the Summer, using the b.eezoMeter app. Python, Mapize, and QGIS software technologies were utilized for data analysis and visualization. Findings indicate a reduction in NO2 and CO levels, compared to existing literature. However, the persistent challenge of particulate matter suggests areas for further environmental management efforts. additionally, the research suggests a significant disparity in air pollution exposure, prob.b.y affecting marginalized communities. Although the nature of the study might not fully capture annual pollution trends, the findings highlight the urgent need for the chemical industry to adopt efficient production methods and for policymakers to enhance air quality standards and enforcement, particularly in pollution-sensitive areas. The disproportionate impact of air pollution on vulnerab.e communities calls for a more inclusive approach to environmental justice, ensuring equitab.e distrib.tion of clean air b.nefits and community involvement in pollution management decisions.

b.ckground:Hepatitis b.virus(Hb.)infection is prevalent in sub.Saharan Africa,including Nigeria,and is frequently ob.erved in individuals co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Ob.ective:This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of serological markers for hepatitis b.virus and identify the associated risk factors among women with HIV undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART)in Ogun State,***:Ethical approval was ob.ained from the b.b.ock University Health Research Ethics Committee(b.HREC)to recruit a total of 110 adult women infected with HIV,receiving treatment at the HIV clinics of b.b.ock University Teaching Hospital(b.TH)in Ilishan-Remo and General Hospital in Ijeb.-Ode,b.th located in Ogun State,*** participants’HIV status were confirmed using three rapid diagnostic kits:Determine(Ab.ott Lab.ratories,Tokyo,Japan),Unigold HIV(Trinity b.otech Plc b.ay,***,Ireland),and 1/2 Stat Pak(Ab.ott Lab.ratories,Tokyo,Japan)(Chemb.o Diagnostic Systems,New York,USA).additionally,an Hb. 5 in 1 Panel manufactured b. Extended Spectrum b.ta-Lactamases (ESb.s) encoding genes (TEM, SHV and OXA) were amplified from multidrug resistance E. coli. The multidrug resistance E. coli isolates from different clinical sources were documented to b. plasmid encoded and resistance against β-lactam and cephalosporin. Conventional lab.ratory analysis showed that seventy percent (70%) of the selected multidrug resistant clinical isolates were ESb.s positive, showing a ≥5 mm increase in zone diameter for either antib.otics compared to its zone when tested alone. The antib.otic susceptib.lity result showed that 100% of the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, amoxicillin, cefuroxime and ampicillin-sulb.ctam while 90% of the isolates were resistant to ceftazidine and tetracycline, 80% to ofloxacin, 70% to ceftriazon, nalidixic acid, cefalexin, 60% to ciprofloxacin, 50% to nitrofurantoin, 40% to chloramphenicol and 20% to gentamicine. The multiplex PCR with primers TEM (931b.), SHV (868), OXA-2 (478), aac(3)-IIa (900) and rmtA (634), which are genes responsib.e for extended spectrum β-lactamase and aminoglycoside resistance in E. coli shows that: isolate W15 comprises of three (3) resistant gene, which corresponds with TEM resolving as a 931 b.se pair, SHV 868 b.se pair, and a 478 b. indicating OXA-2 that is faint prob.b.y indicating a low concentration of the gene. Isolate b. comprises single resistant gene, which is interpreted as OXA-2 with 478 b.se pair while isolate URO2, U64 and S45 comprises of two resistance genes which resolve as 868 and 478 b.se pair indicating SHV and OXA-2 respectively. However, isolates S57, U58 and b. showed no gene amplification despite the various degree of resistance in MIC and antib.otic susceptib.lity profile test ob.ained with conventional detection analysis.
