Reproduction of juniper (Juniperus polycarpos) in Khorasan Razavi, Iran

Juniperus species （juniper） are resistant to drought and have medicinal properties. In order to investigatethe condition of juniper reproduction and prevent a decline in its area, largely caused by problems in natural regeneration, the asexual reproduction of juniper has received special attention besides its sexual propagation. Among the six species of juniper in Iran, the most abundant are Juniperus polycarpos and J. excelsa. Juniperus polycarpos is ambi-sexual and J. excelsa unisexual. We show that collecting seeds in September provided for better germination than in November. In sexual propagation 82.0% and in asexual （graft） 47.6% success were achieved. Compared to a mixture of water, lime and hormones, a natural treatment of only water had better results. Diurnal change of temperature increased germination of juniper seeds over a constant temperature. Aphyllous stem cuttings from mature and old trees are less successful in rooting than leafy cuttings of juniper saplings. A treatment with Aaterra significantly reduced the percentage of rooted cuttings and total root length. Aliette, Fongarid, Octave, Benomyl, Delsene M and Maneb fungicides significantly increased the percentage of rooted cuttings but did not affect total root length. Autumn explants formed more calli than spring explants. Successful multiplication was achieved by treating buds with a mixture of 0.7% polyvinyl pyrrolidone （PVP） and 2% sucrose and cultured in a basal MS or WRC medium, with a maximum number of new buds. In consideration of extracted material of juniper species in remedy of infectious, fungus, contagious diseases as well as for drought resistance and longevity of this species in severe arid environmental conditions and various industrial applications, reproduction and seed production by micro propagation and biotechnology are necessary.

Effect of Timing of Circumcision on Sexual Satisfaction and Function

Objectives: Male circumcision is a commonly-performed surgical procedure in the world. Currently, no consensus exists about the role of the foreskin or the effect circumcision on sexual satisfaction. All previous studies have evaluated the effect of adult circumcision on sexual function. In this study, we responded to “Does circumcision timing have different effects on sexual function?” Methods: Based on circumcision timing (receiving circumcision in less than 18 year olds or older than 18 year olds), the participants were divided into two groups. The following data and measurements were investigated: IIEF-5 score, sexual satisfaction, sexual activity [number of sexual attempt/week] and ability to achieve or maintain an erection. Results: Two hundred and fifty cases including 125 men were investigated in each group. The baseline demographic (age, marital status, education, smoking) was similar in the 2 groups. No statistically significant differences were seen regarding their sexual satisfaction (P = 0.65), sexual activity [number of sexual attempt/week] (P = 0.74), ability to achieve or maintain an erection (P = 0.44), (P = 0.9). The total mean IIEF-5 score was 24.21 +/- 1.94 and 22.23 +/- 1.12 in groups 1 and 2, respectively (p = 0.5). Conclusion: We concluded that the age at which the circumcision is preformed has no effect on the degree of sexual function and satisfaction.

Production of γ-Al2O3from Kaolin

The paper reports a process for synthesis of γ-alumina from kaolin. Kaolin was transformed to meta-kaolin by calcination at 800oC for 2h. γ-alumina powder was synthesized through extracting alumina from meta- kaolin via H2SO4 and meta-kaolin reactions and consequently precipitation in ethanol, which led to form the aluminum sulfate. The precipitated aluminum sulfate was dried and calcined at 900 oC for 2h, which resulted the formation of γ-alumina. The structure of γ-alumina was confirmed by XRD and FTIR and the mean particles size of γ-alumina was determined by SEM to be 0.5 - 0.9 μm. The study revealed the kaolin could be promising material for preparation of γ-alumina.

Nanostructured LaFeO3 and substituted La1-xEuxFeO3 (x = 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2) perovskites were synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion and their activities during the combustion of toluene were evaluated. The structure and physico-chemical properties of the perovskites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and BET surface area analyses. The compounds were crystallized as a perovskite phase with an orthorhombic structure. The mean particle size of the perovskites increased with an increase in europium loading while the specific surface area decreased. Characterization data confirmed that a total insertion of Eu into LaFeO3 occurred at x ≤ 0.15. However, Eu2O3 segregation occurred to some extent especially at x >0.15. The catalytic activity of the catalysts increased substantially with an increase in Eu substitution in the evaluated range.

Electrostatic Charge Generation in Pneumatic Conveying Process: Effect of Particle Properties

One of the main concerns in particle pneumatic conveying process is the possibility of hazards for operation safety due to the electrostatic charge generation as a result of collisions between particles and the equipment wall. Indeed, the electrostatic discharge can occur in the equipment leading to fire or explosion. Simulation of these kinds of processes plays an important role in understanding the various aspects of the system in order to production loss prevention. This paper deals with the simulation of particle pneumatic conveying process inside an inclined tube using a particular method. In this method, the electrification of particles inside the tube is influenced by the vertical collision velocity against the tube wall. Simulation of the particle movements inside the tube, generation of electrostatic charges over the particle surfaces as well as the possibility of fire as a result of discharging the electrostatic energy are investigated. The possibility of fire is investigated by comparing the amount of electrostatic energy with minimum ignition energy (MIE) of the particles. The effect of particle properties including the size and mechanical ones in the simulation is studied. Finally, several solutions are proposed to manage the risk of fire and explosion. As results, the electrostatic energy (E) is beyond the MIE, and the electrostatic discharge can occur leading to explosion for the diameters more than 2 mm and also for elasticity constants lower than 140 MPa. Eventually, there is no hazard of fire and explosion, since all calculated electrostatic energy for the change of Particle Poisson’s ratio varying from 0.1 to 0.9 is less than the MIE value for the air flow rate of 10 m3/h.

Molecular Characterization of Echinococcus granulosusin South of Iran

The focus of present study was to determine the epidemiological and molecular aspects of different strains of cystic echinococcosis in Fars province, Iran. Liver and lung samples from 410 sheep, 206 goats and 315 cattle were collected. In cattle, the infestation rate was 18.1% (57/315), with 11.1% hepatic cysts and 7.0% pulmonary cysts. Out of all identified cysts, 31.4% of the hepatic and 31.8% of the pulmonary cysts were found fertile. Incidence rate of hydatid cyst infection in sheep was 15.5% (64/410) with 11.9% hepatic cysts and 3.6% pulmonary cysts, of which 24.5% and 20% of hepatic and pulmonary cysts were respectively identified as fertile. The infestation rate was 16.0% (33/206) in goat, in which 10.2% and 5.8% cysts were collected from liver and lung, correspondingly. The prevalence of fertile hepatic and pulmonary cysts was recorded as 23.8% and 16.7%, respectively. Genotyping the cystic materials using PCR showed that the most prominent strains responsible for cystic echinococcosis in the Fars province are G1 and G6/7, while no evidence of E. multilocularis was recorded. This information may give us some clues to find out more about strains distribution in different regions in Iran, which may finally use to find tools in the eradication program of the disease, here and elsewhere.

Microstructure Development after Coiling Process in Low-Si Content TRIP-Assisted Steels

The present work aimed to investigate the effect of coiling process conditions on microstructure development in a low-Si content TRIP （transformation-induced plasticity）-assisted steel after thermomechanical processing. In this framework, compression samples which were deformed above Tnr and then intercritically annealed were held isothermally for different durations at temperatures below bainite transformation start temperature. Microstructure of samples were characterized by optical and electron microscopy, XRD （X-ray diffraction） and M6ssbauer spectroscopy. The results indicated that due to low-silicon content of the present steel, the incomplete bainite reaction phenomena was not observed and, hence, the maximum carbon enrichment of residual austenite was achieved in the samples which held for short durations. It was also shown that the maximum carbon enrichment and volume fraction of residual austenite were achieved at intermediate bainite hold temperature of 450 ℃ as the result of competing phenomena, such as microstructural refinement, dislocation density, carbide precipitation and growth.

Nonadiabatic Tapered Optical Fiber for Biosensor Applications

A brief review on biconical tapered fiber sensors for biosensing applications is presented. A variety of configurations and formats of this sensor have been devised for label free biosensing based on measuring small refractive index changes. The biconical nonadiabatic tapered optical fiber offers a number of favorable properties for optical sensing, which have been exploited in several biosensing applications, including cell, protein, and DNA sensors. The types of these sensors present a low-cost fiber biosensor featuring a miniature sensing probe, label-free direct detection, and high sensitivity.

Adsorption of Fe(III) from Aqueous Solution by Linde Type-A Zeolite

Linde Type-A (LTA) zeolite was prepared from sodium aluminate and sodium metasilicate by hydrothermal process precursors. Sodium metasilicate prepared from molten NaOH and SiO2. The zeolite was characterized by FTIR, XRD, XRF and SEM. The adsorption of Fe(III) from aqueous solution by zeolite A was studied. Different parameters like contact time, pH and concentration of iron were investigated. The results show that at contact time of 60 min and pH of 6 maximum adsorption of iron onto zeolite was observed. The kinetic data was analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption kinetics of Fe(III) were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
