Glaucoma,an irreversible optic neuropathy,primarily affects retinal ganglion cells(RGC)and causes vision loss and *** damage to RGCs in glaucoma occurs by various mechanisms,including elevated intraocular pressure,oxidative stress,inflammation,and other neurodegenerative *** the disease progresses,the loss of RGCs leads to vision ***,protecting RGCs from damage and promoting their survival are important goals in managing *** this regard,resveratrol(RES),a polyphenolic phytoalexin,exerts antioxidant effects and slows down the evolution and progression of *** present review shows that RES plays a protective role in RGCs in cases of ischemic injury and hypoxia as well as in ErbB2 protein expression in the ***,RES plays protective roles in RGCs by promoting cell growth,reducing apoptosis,and decreasing oxidative stress in H_(2)O_(2)-exposed *** was also found to inhibit oxidative stress damage in RGCs and suppress the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling *** could alleviate retinal function impairment by suppressing the hypoxia-i nducible factor-1 alpha/vascular endothelial growth factor and p38/p53 axes while stimulating the PI3K/Akt ***,RES might exert potential therapeutic effects for managing glaucoma by protecting RGCs from damage and promoting their survival.

Assessing the biennial conference on science and technology (BICOST IX) 2023 technical output on renewable energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen in line with UN SDG commitments

The development, production and utilization of renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen and the associated technologies in Sri Lanka have great potential to contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The island aims to achieve 70% electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2030 (within the target of 40% utilization of renewable energy sources for the entire energy generation of the country by 2030). The power sector has to invest US$11 billion from 2023 to 2030 to contribute to reaching this target. This commentary aims to provide a critical perspective on the recommendations of the report from the National Science and Technology Commission's 9th biennial conference in 2023 on science and technology, the sub-thematic technical report on clean energy, energy storage and green hydrogen in line with the SDGs in the Sri Lankan context. The technical report provides insightful recommendations for Sri Lanka's energy sector under three main sections: renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen. Also, it explores the potential of various renewable energy sources, energy storage systems and green hydrogen as sustainable solutions to address the country's energy challenges while emphasizing the spillover effects of them, which could contribute to the enterprise's job creation and uplift the economy. This commentary provides a critical perspective on clean energy, energy storage and green hydrogen in line with the United Nations SDGs in the Sri Lankan context based on a recent report from the National Science and Technology Commission of Sri Lanka. Kinetic studies of the oxidative coupling of methane over the Mn/Na_2WO_4/SiO_2 catalyst

Oxidative coupling of methane is a direct way to obtain C2 hydrocarbon, and Mn-Na-W/SiO2 catalyst is the most promising among all the catalysts. The 2%Mn/5%Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst was prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. A 7-step heterogeneous reaction model of the oxidative coupling of methane to C2 hydrocarbons was conducted by co-feeding methane and oxygen at a total pressure of 1 bar over the catalyst. The kinetic measurements were carried out in a micro-catalytic fixed bed reactor. The kinetic data were obtained at the appropriate range of reaction conditions （4 kPa〈Po2 〈20 kPa, 20 kPa〈PcH4〈80 kPa, 800 ℃〈T〈900℃）. The proposed reaction kinetic scheme consists of three primary and four consecutive reaction steps. The conversions of hydrocarbons and carbon oxides were evaluated by applying Langmuir-Hinshelwood type rate equations. Power-law rate equation was applied only for the water-gas shift reaction. In addition, the effects of operating conditions on the reaction rate were studied. The proposed kinetic model can predict the conversion of methane and oxygen as well as the yield of C2 hydrocarbons and carbon oxides with an average accuracy of ± 15%.

Assessment of fracture process in forta and polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete using experimental analysis and digital image correlation

This paper aims to characterize the evolution of the fracture process and the cracking behavior in fortaferro(FF)and polypropylene(PP)fiber-reinforced concrete under the uniaxial compressive loading using experimental analysis and digital image correlation(DIC)on the surface *** this purpose,6 mix designs,including two FF volume fractions of 0.10%,and 0.20%and three PP volume fractions of 0.20%,0.30%,and 0.40%,in addition to a control mix were evaluated according to compressive strength,modulus of elasticity,toughness index,and stress–strain *** influence of fibers on the microstructural texture of specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM)*** show that FF fiber-reinforced concrete specimens demonstrated increased ductility and strength compared to PP *** results revealed that the major crack and fracture appeared at the peak load of the control specimen due to brittleness and sudden gain of large lateral strain,while a gradual increase in micro-crack quantity at 75%of peak load was observed in the fiber specimens,which thenbegan to connect with each other up to the final *** accuracy of the results supports DIC as a reliable alternative for the characterization of the fracture process in fiber-reinforced concrete.

Large-scale seismic isolation through regulated liquefaction： a feasibility study

Using controlled liquefaction, a seismic isolation technique is introduced by which a large area with dozens of structures can be seismically isolated. The proposed Large Scale Seismic Isolation （LSSI） is in many ways similar to conventional base isolations. The required bearing is provided by a fully undrained pre-saturated liquefiable layer which has substantial vertical stiffness/capacity and minimal lateral stiffness. Moreover, required energy dissipation would be provided through material damping and Biot flow-induced damping within the liquefied layer. LSSI consists of a thick non- liquefiable crust layer and an underlying engineered pre-saturated liquefiable layer bounded by two impermeable thin clay layers. The liquefiable layer should be designed to trigger liquefaction as soon as possible within the early seconds of a design level seismic event. Adopting the energy-based GMP liquefaction theory, optimum gradation of the liquefiable layer is also investigated. It tumed out that LSSI would effectively reduce acceleration response spectrum within short to medium periods. Contribution of the proposed LSSI is more pronounced in the case of stronger ground motions such as near field events as well as ground motions with longer return periods.

Correlation of the mean activity coefficient of aqueous electrolyte solutions using an equation of state

Accurate calculation of thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solution is essential in the design and optimization of many processes in chemical industries. A new electrolyte equation of state is developed for aqueous electrolyte solutions. The Carnahan-Starling repulsive model and an attractive term based on square-well potential are adopted to represent the short range interaction of ionic and molecular species in the new electrolyte EOS. The long range interaction of ionic species is expressed by a simplified version of Mean Spherical Approximation theory （MSA）. The new equation of state also contains a Born term for charging free energy of ions. Three adjustable parameters of new eEOS per each electrolyte solution are size parameter, square-well potential depth and square-well potential interaction range. The new eEOS is applied for correlation of mean activity coefficient and prediction of osmotic coefficient of various strong aqueous electrolyte solutions at 25℃ and 0.1 MPa. In addition, the extension of the new eEOS for correlation of mean activity coefficient and solution density of a few aqueous electrolytes at temperature range of 0 to 100℃ is carried out.

Vanadium oxide nanotubes for selective catalytic reduction of NO_x with NH_3

Vanadium oxide （VOx） nanostructures, synthesized by hydrothermal treatment using dodecylamine as template, were evaluated for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia （NH3-SCR）, The effect of solvent type in the reaction mixture （EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20）） and time of hydrolysis was studied. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and BET, The VOx nanorods （80-120 nm diameter and 1-4 μm length） were synthesized in 25 vol% EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20） and the open-ended multiwalled VOx nanotube （50-100 nm inner diameter, 110-180 nm outer diameter and 0,5-2 pm length） synthesized in 50 vol% EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20）. VOx nanotuhes performed the superior NH3-SCR activity under a gas hourly space velocity of 12,000 h-1 at low temperature of 250 ~C （NOx conversion of 893g ＆ N2 selectivity of 100%）, while most of the developed Vanadia base catalysts are active at high temperature （〉350 ℃）. The superior NH3-SCR activity ofVOx nanotubes at low tem- perature is related to nanocrystalline structure, special nanotube morphology as well as high specific surface area.

Creep rupture assessment for Level-2 PSA of a 2-loop PWR： accounting for phenomenological uncertainties

The Level-2 probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) of pressurized water reactors studies the possibility of creep rupture for major reactor coolant system components during the course of high pressure severe accident sequences. The present paper covers this technical issue and tries to quantify its associated phenomenological uncertainties for the development of Level-2 PSA. A framework is proposed for the formal quantification of uncertainties in the Level-2 PSA model of a PWR type nuclear power plant using an integrated deterministic and PSA approach. This is demonstrated for estimation of creep rupture failure probability in station blackout severe accident of a 2-loop PWR, which is the representative case for high pressure sequences. MELCOR 1.8.6 code is employed here as the deterministic tool for the assessment of physical phenomena in the course of accident. In addition, a MATLAB code is developed for quantification of the probabilistic part by treating the uncertainties through separation of aleatory and epistemic sources of *** probability for steam generator tube creep rupture is estimated at 0.17.

Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)provides a powerful tool for investigating complicated fluid *** paper aims to study the applicability of CFD in the preliminary design of linear and nonlinear fluid viscous *** fluid viscous dampers were designed based on CFD *** first device was a linear viscous damper with straight *** second was a nonlinear viscous damper containing a one-way pressure-responsive valve inside its *** dampers were detailed based on CFD simulations,and their internal fluid flows were ***-scale specimens of both dampers were manufactured and tested under dynamic *** to the tests results,both dampers demonstrate stable cyclic behaviors,and as expected,the nonlinear damper generally tends to dissipate more energy compared to its linear *** compatibility was achieved between the experimentally measured damper force-velocity curves and those estimated from CFD *** a thermography camera,a rise in temperature of the dampers was measured during the *** was found that output force of the manufactured devices was virtually independent of temperature even during long duration ***,temperature dependence can be ignored in CFD models,because a reliable temperature compensator mechanism was used(or intended to be used)by the damper manufacturer.
