Single-and double-dose of platelet-rich plasma versus hyaluronic acid for treatment of knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Platelet-rich plasma(PRP)and hyaluronic acid have been shown to be useful in the treatment of knee ***,investigations comparing the efficacy of these two drugs together are *** To compare the outcomes of PRP vs hyaluronic acid injections in three groups of patients with bilateral knee *** This randomized controlled trial study involved 95 ***-one subjects received a single injection of PRP(group PRP-1),33 subjects received two injections of PRP at an interval of 3 wk(group PRP-2)and 31 subjects received three injections of hyaluronic acid at 1-wk intervals(group hyaluronic acid).The patients were investigated prospectively at the enrollment and at 4-,8-and 12-wk follow-up with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index(WOMAC)and Visual Analogue Scale *** Percentages of patients experiencing at least a 30%decrease in the total score for the WOMAC pain subscale from baseline to wk 12 of the intervention were 86%,100%and 0%in the groups PRP-1,PRP-2 and hyaluronic acid,respectively(P<0.001).The mean total WOMAC scores for groups PRP-1,PRP-2 and hyaluronic acid at baseline were 63.71,61.57 and 63.11,*** WOMAC scores were significantly improved at final follow-up to 42.5,35.32 and 57.26,*** highest efficacy of PRP was observed in both groups at wk 4 with about 50%decrease in the symptoms compared with about 25%decrease for hyaluronic *** PRP-2 had higher efficacy than group *** major adverse effects were found during the *** PRP is a safe and efficient therapeutic option for treatment of knee *** was demonstrated to be significantly better than hyaluronic *** also found that the efficacy of PRP increases after multiple injections.

Effect of promoters such as Barium and Lanthanum has been investigated on the conventional nanostructured iron catalyst in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The nanosized iron-based catalysts were prepared by a microemulsion method with the general formulation of 100Fe/4Cu, 100Fe/4Cu/2La, 100Fe/4Cu/ 1La/1Ba, and 100Fe/4Cu/2Ba. The phase, structure, and morphology of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of CO2, and temperature- programmed reduction. The results indicated that the addition of promoters could improve the activity of Fe catalysts for FTS and WGS (water-gas shift reaction) and lower the gas fraction at the outlet. In addition, both Ba- and La-promoted Fe catalysts exhibit the highest activity due to the synergetic effect.

Assessment of fracture process in forta and polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete using experimental analysis and digital image correlation

This paper aims to characterize the evolution of the fracture process and the cracking behavior in fortaferro(FF)and polypropylene(PP)fiber-reinforced concrete under the uniaxial compressive loading using experimental analysis and digital image correlation(DIC)on the surface *** this purpose,6 mix designs,including two FF volume fractions of 0.10%,and 0.20%and three PP volume fractions of 0.20%,0.30%,and 0.40%,in addition to a control mix were evaluated according to compressive strength,modulus of elasticity,toughness index,and stress–strain *** influence of fibers on the microstructural texture of specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM)*** show that FF fiber-reinforced concrete specimens demonstrated increased ductility and strength compared to PP *** results revealed that the major crack and fracture appeared at the peak load of the control specimen due to brittleness and sudden gain of large lateral strain,while a gradual increase in micro-crack quantity at 75%of peak load was observed in the fiber specimens,which thenbegan to connect with each other up to the final *** accuracy of the results supports DIC as a reliable alternative for the characterization of the fracture process in fiber-reinforced concrete.

Vanadium oxide nanotubes for selective catalytic reduction of NO_x with NH_3

Vanadium oxide （VOx） nanostructures, synthesized by hydrothermal treatment using dodecylamine as template, were evaluated for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia （NH3-SCR）, The effect of solvent type in the reaction mixture （EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20）） and time of hydrolysis was studied. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and BET, The VOx nanorods （80-120 nm diameter and 1-4 μm length） were synthesized in 25 vol% EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20） and the open-ended multiwalled VOx nanotube （50-100 nm inner diameter, 110-180 nm outer diameter and 0,5-2 pm length） synthesized in 50 vol% EtOH/（EtOH ＋ H20）. VOx nanotuhes performed the superior NH3-SCR activity under a gas hourly space velocity of 12,000 h-1 at low temperature of 250 ~C （NOx conversion of 893g ＆ N2 selectivity of 100%）, while most of the developed Vanadia base catalysts are active at high temperature （〉350 ℃）. The superior NH3-SCR activity ofVOx nanotubes at low tem- perature is related to nanocrystalline structure, special nanotube morphology as well as high specific surface area.

Correlation of the mean activity coefficient of aqueous electrolyte solutions using an equation of state

Accurate calculation of thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solution is essential in the design and optimization of many processes in chemical industries. A new electrolyte equation of state is developed for aqueous electrolyte solutions. The Carnahan-Starling repulsive model and an attractive term based on square-well potential are adopted to represent the short range interaction of ionic and molecular species in the new electrolyte EOS. The long range interaction of ionic species is expressed by a simplified version of Mean Spherical Approximation theory （MSA）. The new equation of state also contains a Born term for charging free energy of ions. Three adjustable parameters of new eEOS per each electrolyte solution are size parameter, square-well potential depth and square-well potential interaction range. The new eEOS is applied for correlation of mean activity coefficient and prediction of osmotic coefficient of various strong aqueous electrolyte solutions at 25℃ and 0.1 MPa. In addition, the extension of the new eEOS for correlation of mean activity coefficient and solution density of a few aqueous electrolytes at temperature range of 0 to 100℃ is carried out.

Analytical investigation of temperature of a single micron sized iron particle during combustion

The present study deals with analytical investigation of temperature of a single burning iron *** mathematical methods including AGM(Akbari-Ganji’s method),CM(Collocation method)and GM(Galerkin Method)are applied to solving non-linear differential governing equation and effectiveness of these methods is examined as *** further investigation,forth order Runge-Kutta approach,a numerical method,is used to validate the obtained analytical *** the present study,the developed mathematical model takes into account the effects of thermal radiation,convective heat transfer and particle density variations during combustion *** to particles’small size and high thermal conductivity,the system is assumed to be lumped in which the particle temperature does not change within the body and all of its regions are at the same *** temperature distributions obtained by analytical methods have satisfactory agreement with numerical ***,the results indicate that AGM is a more appropriate method than GM and CM due to its lower mean relative error and less run time.

Creep rupture assessment for Level-2 PSA of a 2-loop PWR： accounting for phenomenological uncertainties

The Level-2 probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) of pressurized water reactors studies the possibility of creep rupture for major reactor coolant system components during the course of high pressure severe accident sequences. The present paper covers this technical issue and tries to quantify its associated phenomenological uncertainties for the development of Level-2 PSA. A framework is proposed for the formal quantification of uncertainties in the Level-2 PSA model of a PWR type nuclear power plant using an integrated deterministic and PSA approach. This is demonstrated for estimation of creep rupture failure probability in station blackout severe accident of a 2-loop PWR, which is the representative case for high pressure sequences. MELCOR 1.8.6 code is employed here as the deterministic tool for the assessment of physical phenomena in the course of accident. In addition, a MATLAB code is developed for quantification of the probabilistic part by treating the uncertainties through separation of aleatory and epistemic sources of *** probability for steam generator tube creep rupture is estimated at 0.17.

Ocular higher-order aberrations and mesopic pupil size in individuals screened for refractive surgery

AIM: To study the distribution of ocular higher-order aberrations(HOAs) and mesopic pupil size in individuals screened for refractive surgery. · METHODS: Ocular HOAs and mesopic pupil size were studied in 2 458 eyes of 1 240 patients with myopia, myopic astigmatism and compound myopic astigmatism and 215 eyes of 110 patients with hyperopia, hyperopic astigmatism and compound hyperopic astigmatism using the Zywave aberrometer (Busch& Lomb). All patients had correctable refractive errors without a history of refractive surgery or underlying diseases. Root-mean-square values of HOAs, total spherical aberration, total coma and mesopic pupil size were analyzed. Ocular HOAs were measured across a ≥ 6.0 mm pupil, and pupil size measurements were performed under the mesopic condition. · RESULTS: The mean values of HOAs, total spherical aberration and total coma in the myopic group were 0.369 μm, ±0.233, 0.133±0.112μm and 0.330±0.188μm, respectively. In the hyperopic group the mean values of HOAs, total spherical aberration and total coma were 0.418μm±0.214, 0.202±0.209μm and 0.343±0.201μm, respectively. Hyperopes showed greater total HOAs (P <0.01) and total spherical aberration (P <0.01) compared to myopes. In age-matched analysis, only the amount of total spherical aberration was higher in the hyperopic group (P =0.05). Mesopic pupil size in the myopic group was larger (P ≤0.05). · CONCLUSION: The results suggested that significant levels of HOAs were found in both groups which are important for planning refractive surgeries on Iranians. There were significantly higher levels of total spherical aberration in hyperopes compared to myopes. Mesopic pupil size was larger in myopic group.

Hot deformation behavior of Fe-29Ni-17Co alloy

Hot compression tests were carried out on a Fe-29Ni-17Co alloy in the temperature range of 900 ℃ to 1200 ℃ and at strain rates of 0.001-1 s-1. Dynamic recrystallization was found responsible for flow softening during hot compression. The flow behavior was successfully analyzed by the hyperbolic sine equation and the corresponding material constants A, n and αwere determined. The value of apparent activation energy was determined as 423 kJ/mol. The peak and steady state strains showed simple power-law dependence on the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The dynamic recrystallization kinetics was analyzed using Avrami equation and the corresponding exponent was determined to be about 2.7. This value, higher than 2 reported in the literatures, is associated with the mechanism of continuous dynamic recrystallization in the studied alloy. The flow curve up to the peak was modeled by the Cingara equation and the strain exponent, c, was determined about 0.85. The higher value of c compared with the value of 0.2 which has been reported for some stainless steels fortified the idea of extended dynamic recovery or continuous dynamic recrystallization in the studied alloy.

Higher order aberration comparison between two aspherical intraocular lenses: MC6125AS and Akreos advanced optics

AIM: To compare higher order aberrations in two aspherical intraocular lenses(IOLs): Akreos advanced optics(AO) and Dr. Schmidt Microcrystalline 6125 aspheric anterior surface(MC6125AS) with each other. METHODS: Forty eyes of 39 patients underwent phacoemulsification and Akreos AO and MC6125 AS were implanted in their eyes in a random manner. Three months post-operatively, higher order aberrations including spherical aberration, coma aberration, and total aberrations were measured and ***: The total aberration was 0.24±0.17 in eyes with Dr. Schmidt and 0.20 ±0.01 in eyes with Akreos AO(P =0.361). The mean of coma aberration was 0.17 ±0.21 and 0.09 ±0.86 in Dr. Schmidt and Akreos lenses,respectively(P =0.825). Total spherical aberration was almost the same in both groups(mean: 0.05, P =0.933).Best corrected visual acuity in Akreos AO(0.10±0.68) and Dr. Schmidt(0.09±0.67) did not differ significantly(P =0.700). CONCLUSION: There is no statistically significant difference in the higher order aberrations between these two aspherical lenses.
