The Effect of Soy Nuts on Glycemic Control, Lipid Profile and Insulin-Resistance in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Type 2 diabetes has a high prevalence and a growing trend. The use of a proper diet treatment is one of the therapeutic approaches of patients. The use of the soy has shown the effective results in glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes;however, data are paradoxical. The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of soy nuts on glycemic control, blood pressure and lipid profile and insulin-resistance of the diabetic patients. Methods: In this case-control study 69 type 2 diabetic patients were randomly divided into two groups: intervention (n = 35) and control (n = 34). The patients in the intervention group substituted 60 grams of soy nuts as a part of the daily protein requirement for eight weeks. In contrast, the patients in the control group received usual diet of diabetes (no soy). The drugs received by patients had not been changed during the intervention period. Before and at the end of the intervention, Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum insulin levels, insulin-resistance, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) and total cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG) were measured in the patients. Insulin-resistance was calculated by Homeostatic model assessment-IR formula (HOMA-IR). Results: Soy consumption significantly lowered FPG (P = 0.03), HbA1c (P P = 0.01), insulin-resistance (P = 0.01), total cholesterol (P P = 0.01), but did not have any significant effect on systolic blood pressure (P = 0.4), diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.2), HDL-c (P = 0.4) and TG (P = 0.2). Conclusion: Consumption of soy nuts in type 2 diabetic patients can cause an improvement in the glycemic control and insulin-resistance, and the lipid profile does not have any significant effect on blood pressure.

Comparison of Established Risk Factors among Type 2 Diabetic Patients with or without Retinopathy in Golestan Hospital, Ahvaz 2010

The aim of this study was to establish diabetic retinopathy correlation with several risk factors. A prospective study including 256 type II diabetic patients who referred to diabetes’s clinic was designed. All patients underwent physical & retina examination and then completed questionnaire including duration of DM, cardiovascular disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, smoking, and kind of treatment, blood pressure, BMI, abdominal & hip circumference. Results of HbA1C, total cholesterol, HDL & LDL cholesterol, TG, FBS, creatinine, 24-h urine microalbumin were recorded. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 17 with K2, independent samples T, and logistic regression. Of 256 types II diabetic patients 81 & 175 were men and women respectively. Mean age of subject was 54 ± 10.27. Prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was 22.3% & macula edema 0.5% & PDR 6% & NPDR 14%;diabetic retinopathy was associated with duration of DM & BMI (P = 0, P = 0.43 respectively). Mean of FBS 191 ± 83 vs. 165.7 ± 74.5 (P = 0.03), HbA1c 9.1 ± 2 vs. 8.5 ± 1.9 (P = 0.02), 24-h urine microalbumin 181.2 ± 404.7 vs. 60.2 ± 236 (P = 0.03), Systolic blood pressure 124.3 ± 21.3 vs. 118.5 ± 17.8 (p = 0.04) differed between diabetic patients with or without diabetic retinopathy. There were no significant difference between subject with & without diabetic retinopathy in total cholesterol LDL, HDL, TG, Cr, Diastolic BP, types of treatment, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke & smoking. This study showed prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was high and it associated with duration of DM, BMI, FBS, HbA1C, 24-h urine albumin, and systolic blood pressure.

The comparison of insulin and uric acid levels in adolescents with and without metabolic syndrome

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) increased in recent years in both adolescents and children groups. The aim of the study is evaluating the relationship between insulin and uric acid (UA) level in MS in adolescents we studied 120 adolescence aged 10 to 19 in two groups: control group without metabolic syndrome and case group with metabolic syndrome. The Criteria of ATP III was considered as a diagnosis factor for metabolic syndrome. Various studies have been conducted in various populations to evaluate the relationship between UA level and MS in adolescents. Abdominal obesity, low HDL, hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension are associated with high UA level. In their analysis, the MS OR in UA level⩽4.9, 4.9-5.8 and ⩾5.8 mg/dl was 1, 2.53 and 9.03, respectively, which were higher than our findings in current study. Hyperinsulinemia caused by insulin resistance is one of the complications associated with MS, which puts individuals at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular events. Uric acid level in the Case group was significantly higher than the control group (p = 0.0001, 43.8±1.4 vs. 4.1±1 mg/dl, respectively). Insulin level was significantly higher in the case group in compare to the control group (p = 0.008, 9.8± 5.3 vs. 12.2±6 μU/ml, respectively). The findings of this case-control study showed that adolescents with metabolic syndrome have a higher uric acid and insulin level in compare to normal subjects. We hypothesis that increase in serum insulin and uric acid level can be a risk factor in the development of metabolic syndrome.

Polydopamine Coating on Titanium Affects Osteoblastic Differentiation to a Greater Degree than Does Surface Roughness

Biointerface design can greatly influence cell behavior. Therefore, in this study we examined the effects of three surface characteristics, roughness, chemistry, and wettability, on osteoblastic cell differentiation. We examined osteoblastic differentiation on titanium (Ti) samples with four levels of roughness (average roughness: 148.6 ± 23.1, 42 ± 6.2, 14.3 ± 5.5, 7.2 ± 1.6 nm) with or without a nanolayer coating of polydopamine (PDA). In vitro osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by quantifying alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity of human fetal preosteoblastic (hFOB 1.19) cells. The change in surface chemistry of Ti samples as a result of PDA coating was assessed by XPS analysis and water contact angle measurement. Results demonstrated that PDA treated samples were more hydrophilic, compared to untreated samples, and this was substrate roughness independent. Moreover, with the exception of the substrate with an oriented texture of surface nanotopography (RTi-4), the presence of a PDA nanolayer increased AP activity independent of substrate roughness. Our results suggest that surface chemistry and wettability, induced by a PDA nanolayer coating, had a greater effect on osteoblastic differentiation than did surface roughness.

Fabrication and Characterization of Chitosan Based Injectable Thermosensitive Hydrogels Containing Silica/Calcium Phosphate Nanocomposite Particles

In this study, the effect of silica/calcium phosphate (SiCaP) nanocomposite particles on the properties of a novel chitosan-based thermosensitive hydrogel system was examined. SiCaP nanocomposite powder was fabricated using a sol-gel method and then used to fabricate nanocomposite hydrogels (Ch- β/7.5SiCaP and Ch-β/15SiCaP) including chitosan and β-glycerophosphate (Ch-β) as a matrix. Results revealed that compared to the Ch-β hydrogel without SiCaP, the presence of SiCaP particles in nanocomposite hydrogels maintained pH stability during the sol-gel transition, accelerated the gelation and improved the stiffness of nanocomposite hydrogels. Gelation time at 37℃ was reduced approximately 75% and stiffness was increased approximately 115%. Both of these changes are attributed to chemical and physical interactions of the SiCaP bioactive particles with chitosan. Furthermore, compared to the Ch-β hydrogel, the presence of SiCaP in the Ch-β/7.5SiCaP nanocomposite hydrogel did not affect biocompatibility negatively, but improved osteoblastic cell differentiation. Our studies suggest that these nanocomposite hydrogels may offer an innovative approach to bone regeneration strategies.

Nonadiabatic Tapered Optical Fiber for Biosensor Applications

A brief review on biconical tapered fiber sensors for biosensing applications is presented. A variety of configurations and formats of this sensor have been devised for label free biosensing based on measuring small refractive index changes. The biconical nonadiabatic tapered optical fiber offers a number of favorable properties for optical sensing, which have been exploited in several biosensing applications, including cell, protein, and DNA sensors. The types of these sensors present a low-cost fiber biosensor featuring a miniature sensing probe, label-free direct detection, and high sensitivity.

Menstrual blood stem cells (MensSCs) have enormous potential as a source for cell replacement therapies. Since there is a major concern in utilization of nanofibers in tissue engineering of stem cells, we examined the potential of MensSCs to differentiate into hepatocytes, using different protocols and compare cells, with two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) culture systems. Cell characterization experiments of MensSCs have demonstrated that they are multipotent stem cells similar to mesenchymal stem cells, which can successfully differentiate into osteogenic and adipogenic lineages. The efficiency of the cells on the scaffold was appraised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), MTT assay, and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Thereafter, the differentiation protocols were developed by hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and oncostatin M (OSM) with serum-supplemented or serum-free culture media up to 30 days. Immunofluorescence analysis and ELISA assay revealed the expression of albumin (ALB) in differentiated cells. Hepatocyte-like cells expressed liver-specific gene such as albumin(ALB), α-fetoprotein (AFP), tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) and cytochrome P450 subunit 7a1 (Cyp7a1) at mRNA levels. In conclusion, the evidences presented in this study show that the nanofiber scaffold and MensSCs may provide a source of differentiated cells for treatment of liver diseases.
