Effects of 17<i>β</i>-Estradiol on Dopamine D2 Receptors in Thiamine-Deficient Female Rats: Consequences on Sucrose, Alcohol, Water Intakes and Body Weight

Our previous studies showed that 17β-estradiol (E2) modulated dopamine D2 receptor in regulating body weight set-point. The aim of this study was to understand whether thiamine deficiency influenced the E2 modulation on dopamine D2 receptors, using bromocriptine mesylate (BR) and sulpiride (SUL) as selective central dopamine-D2 receptors agonist and antagonist respectively. We studied the E2-dopamine D2 receptors interferences in a 10-day thiamine-deficient female rats for which consumptions of water, sugar, alcohol and food were daily-recorded and their consequences on body weights assessed. Our results showed that the volume of water daily ingested doubled in thiamine-deficient female rats (OXT), while sugar and alcohol consumptions collapsed with decreased weight and food consumption. On the one hand, thiamine potentiated D2/BR activity (bromocriptine-activated D2 receptors) to induce sugar intake and inhibited the same D2/BR receptors to induce water intake. On the other hand, thiamine promoted D2/SUL receptors (sulpiride-inhibited D2 receptors) for enhanced alcohol intake, increased food consumption and weight gain. Taking together, thiamine modulated the actions of 17β-estradiol on both D2/BR and D2/SUL receptors activities.

In this article, we consider the construction of a SVIR (Susceptible, Vaccinated, Infected, Recovered) stochastic compartmental model of measles. We prove that the deterministic solution is asymptotically the average of the stochastic solution in the case of small population size. The choice of this model takes into account the random fluctuations inherent to the epidemiological characteristics of rural populations of Niger, notably a high prevalence of measles in children under 5, coupled with a very low immunization coverage.

Background: We studied the development of eight (8) different psychomotor and sensory functions in male and female rats, from postnatal day 10 to 45, with the aim of determining whether the ontogenesis of these functions was subject to sexual dimorphism. Methods: Wistar rats bred according to standard conditions in our laboratories were put into reproduction. Ten days after whelping, male and female pups were identified and subjected to a battery of behavioral tests on postnatal days 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 45, to assess the development of the following psychomotor and sensory functions: Exploratory activity, locomotor activity, emotional defecation, hind paws lifting reflex latency, wire-grasping time, Latencies of execution of crawling along the wire and of leap onto the ground, nociception (tail flick) and body weight. Results: Only complex brain functions generated by cerebral cortex activities, i.e. exploratory activity and leap execution latency, do not undergo differential development sex-dependent. However, voluntary motor functions initiated in the motor cortex, and requiring high peripheral muscle performance such as crawling execution latency and wire-grasping time developed more rapidly in males than in females. Correlatively, body weight i.e. muscle mass index increased more speedily in males than in females. On the other hand, studies of automatic motor functions such as locomotor activity, and reflex motor functions i.e. hind paws lifting reflex latency and tail flick latency showed earlier development in females than in males. In addition, the study of emotional response, an emanation of limbic structures, showed prodigious development in females compared to males. Conclusion: Our studies have shown that there is a developmental sexual dimorphism of the central nervous system in the rat. Trauma to the external genitalia by tearing is rare. We report the case of a 30-year-old patient, admitted to the emergency room for trauma of the external genitalia by traction following a blow and intentional injury. The authors highlight the lesions that can occur during this type of trauma and insist on the systematic search for urethral and cavernous lesions. Conclusion: Trauma to the external genitalia by intentional assault and battery is rare in our context. They occur most often in a young person and are frequently associated with damage to the corpora cavernosa and urethra.

The aim of this paper is to select the best location for the construction of a dry port in Niger which is a land locked country (LLC). Niger is located in the Sahel and has a land area of 1,267,000 square kilometers [1], with the closest port being port of Cotonou in Benin. The transport corridor from Niamey to Cotonou is approximately 1036 km long [2]. It is estimated that this corridor carries about 40 percent of Niger’s overseas trade traffic [3]. In this work, the Analytic Network Process (ANP) model is used to determine the optimal location of the dry port, among three major cities: Niamey (capital city), Dosso and Gaya. From the application of this selection model, Dosso was selected as the best location for the location of the dry port, while Gaya and Niamey were placed second and third respectively. The results obtained in this work strongly confirm the decision of the government of Niger to construct a dry port in Dosso, a project that commenced in 2010 and is still in progress.

This work involves the evaluation of dry port competitiveness through analysis of efficiencies for selected dry ports in Africa. Five dry ports were selected and analysis carried out over a period of four years. The dry ports considered were Mojo and Kality in Ethiopia, Mombasa in Kenya, Isaka in Tanzania and Casablanca in Casablanca, Morocco. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was applied for this work. Container throughputs for the various ports under consideration were used as the output variable for the data analysis model, while the number of reach stackers, the number of tractors, the number of forklifts and the size of the dry port were used as the input variables. From the results, the Mombasa dry port was found to be the most efficient with an average score of approximately 1 over the period under consideration. Casablanca was the second efficient dry port with an average score of 0.762, while Isaka was the least efficient with an average score of 0.142. This research is significant since the African countries have embraced the dry port concept, as witnessed in the huge investments in this sector, and would serve to highlight areas that need improvement for the few existing dry port facilities, most of which are undergoing expansion as well as modernization.
