Investigation of Electronic, Elastic and Dynamic Properties of AgNbO₃ and AgTaO₃ under Pressure: Ab Initio Calculation

Based on the density functional theory within the local density approximation (LDA), we studied the electronic, elastic, and dynamic properties of AgNbO3 and AgTaO3 compounds under pressure. The elastic constants, optic and static dielectric constants, born effective charges, and dynamic properties of AgNbO3 and AgTaO3 in cubic phase were studied as pressure dependences with the ab initio method. For these compounds, we have also calculated the bulk modulus, Young’s modulus, shear modulus, Vickers hardness, Poisson’s ratio, anisotropy factor, sound velocities, and Debye temperature from the obtained elastic constants. In addition, the brittleness and ductility properties of these compounds were estimated from Poisson’s ratio and Pugh’s rule (G/B). Our calculated values also show that AgNbO3 (0.37) and AgTaO3 (0.39) behave as ductile materials and steer away from brittleness by increasing pressure. The calculated values of Vicker hardness for both compounds indicate that they are soft materials. The results show that band gaps, elastic constants, elastic modules, and dynamic properties for both compounds are sensitive to pressure changes. We have also made some comparisons with related experimental and theoretical data that is available in the literature.

Synthesis of pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile and 1,2,4-triazine-5(4H)-one derivatives from furan-2,3-diones

The reaction of furan-2,3-diones with S-methylisothiosemicarbazide hydroiodide yielded novel 1,2,4- triazine-5（4H）-ones, and reaction of furan-2,3-diones with diaminomaleonitrile led to the formation of pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile derivatives, and the hydrolysis of these products led to the formation of more new pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile derivatives. These compounds are potential herbicides and pesticides.

Comparison of aerobic conjunctival bacterial flora in pregnant, reproductive-aged and postmenopausal women

AIM: To evaluate the effect of hormonal status on aerobic conjunctival flora in women. METHODS: One hundred fifty-eight women [reproductive-aged (n=55), pregnant (n=51), and postmenopausal (n=52)] who admitted to outpatient clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Denizli State Hospital were enrolled. Age, body-mass index (BMI), obstetric history, cigarette smoking, drug usage, presence of systemic disease, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were recorded for each patient. The samples were taken from the lower fornix with two culture swabs and directly incubated in culture containing 5% sheep blood, eosin-methylene blue and chocolate agar. The other swab specimen was Gram stained. All growths and microscopic results were analyzed. RESULTS: The coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the predominant organism isolated in the conjunctival samples in both three groups. The aerobic microorganism growth rate for all isolated aerobic organisms revealed no significant change in the three groups (P>0.05). The conjunctival culture positivity rates were similar in the three groups (49% in reproductive-aged, 57% in pregnant and 58% in postmenopausal women) (P>0.05). Age, IOP, BMI, gravidity, parity, cigarette smoking, drug usage, and presence of systemic diseases did not have an effect on culture positivity in three groups. CONCLUSION: Results of this study showed that conjunctival aerobic flora and bacterial colonization did not differ between reproductive-aged, pregnant and postmenopausal women.

System-level Pareto frontiers for on-chip thermoelectric coolers

The continuous rise in heat dissipation of integrated circuits necessitates advanced thermal solutions to ensure system reliability and efficiency. Thermoelectric coolers are among the most promising techniques for dealing with localized on-chip hot spots. This study focuses on establishing a holistic optimization methodol- ogy for such thermoelectric coolers, in which a thermo- electric element＇s thickness and the electrical current are optimized to minimize source temperature with respect to ambient, when the thermal and electrical parasitic effects are considered. It is found that when element thickness and electrical current are optimized for a given system architecture, a ＂heat flux vs. temperature difference＂ Pareto frontier curve is obtained, indicating that there is an optimum thickness and a corresponding optimum current that maximize the achievable temperature reduc- tion while removing a particular heat flux. This methodol- ogy also provides the possible system level AT＇s that can be achieved for a range of heat fluxes, defining the upper limits of thermoelectric cooling for that architecture. In this study, use was made of an extensive analytical model, which was verified using commercially available finite element analysis software. Through the optimization process, 3 pairs of master curves were generated, which were then used to compose the Pareto frontier for any given system architecture. Finally, a case study wasperformed to provide an in-depth demonstration of the optimization procedure for an example application.

Background:Extra genetic material in patients with Down syndrome(DS)may affect the function of any organ *** evaluated cardiac functions using conventional tissue Doppler and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography in patients with DS in the absence of congenital and acquired heart disease in ***:A total of 115 patients with DS between 6 and 13 years of age with clinically and anatomically normal heart and 55 healthy children were included in this cross-sectional *** was diagnosed by a karyotype *** with mosaic type were not included in this *** and diastolic functions were evaluated by ***:Pulsed waved Doppler transmitral early/late inflow velocity(E/A),tissue Doppler mitral annular early/late diastolic peak velocity(Ea/Aa),transtricuspid E/A and tricuspid valve annulus Ea/Aa,pulmonary venous Doppler systolic/diastolic(S/D)wave ratio were lower in patients with Down syndrome than in the control group(P=0.04,P=0.001,P<0.05,P<0.001,P<0.001,respectively).Mitral and tricuspid annular Ea were lower in patients with DS(P<0.001).The right and left ventricular myocardial performance indexes were higher in patients with DS than in the controls(P<0.01).They had significantly higher left ventricular mass,ejection fraction,the mitral annular plane systolic excursion ***,the Down syndrome group compared with the controls had a lower strain values examined by two-dimensional longitudinal speckle-tracking strain ***:These findings suggest conventional tissue Doppler and two-dimensional longitudinal speckletracking strain echocardiography were useful methods of investigating ventricular function and identifying a higher incidence of biventricular dysfunction in patients with Down syndrome compared with the healthy controls.

Electronic and Optical Properties of Rare Earth Oxides: <i>Ab Initio</i>Calculation

In this work, we have investigated the electronic and optical properties of the technologically important rare earth oxide compounds—X2O3 (X: Gd, Tb) using the density functional theory within the GGA. The band structure of X2O3 have been calculated along high symmetry directions in the first brillouin zone. The real and imaginary parts of dilectric functions and the other optical responses such as energy-loss function, the effective number of valence electrons and the effective optical dielectric constants of the rare earth sesquioxides (Gd2O3 and Tb2O3) were calculated.
