Assessment of chicken breast shelf life based on bench-top and portable near-infrared spectroscopy tools coupled with chemometrics

Objectives:Near-infra red(NIR)spectroscopy is a rapid technique able to assess meat quality even if its capability to determine the shelf life of chicken fresh cuts is still debated,especially for portable *** aim of the study was to compare bench-top and portable NIR instruments in discriminating between four chicken breast refrigeration times(RT),coupled with multivariate classifier *** and Methods:Ninety-six samples were analysed by both NIR tools at 2,6,10 and 14 days post *** data were subsequently submitted to partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)and canonical discriminant analysis(CDA).The latter was preceded by double feature selection based on Boruta and Stepwise ***:PLS-DA sorted moderate separation of RT theses,while shelf life assessment was more accurate on application of ***-top tool had better performance than portable one,probably because it captured more informative spectral data as shown by the variable importance in projection(VIP)and restricted pool of Stepwise-CDA predictive scores(SPS).Conclusions:NIR tools coupled with a multivariate model provide deep insight into the physicochemical processes occurring during *** showed reliable effectiveness to recognise a 7-day shelf life threshold of breasts,suitable for routine at-line application for screening of meat quality.

A test of the species confidence hypothesis in dusky damselfish

The Effect of Electromagnetic Fields with the Mg²⁺ Cyclotron Frequency on Mouse Reproductive Performance

The present study is aimed to test whether exposure to electromagnetic fields of very weak intensity (≤1 mT) and low frequency (≤100 Hz) may influence reproductive performance and induce teratogenesis in mice. We speculate that a resonant effect occur when the applied frequency matches the cyclotron frequency of Mg2+ (≈60 Hz) involved in the cell duplication. Four groups of mice (four dams and one male each) were exposed to ?50 μT electromagnetic field continuous irradiation of for 100 days. A control group (four dams and one male) was also examined. The exposed dams exhibited a significantly lower number of offspring per birth than the control ones (11.0 vs. 11.6;P = 0.006). A significantly lower average daily gain of body weight per mouse was observed (0.74 vs. 0.77 g/d;P = 0.002), resulting in a reduction of the average body weight per nest at 11 days of age (404 vs. 463 g;P = 0.048). Post mortem examinations revealed a significant increase in mild chronic hepatic inflammatory findings (28 vs. 0%;P = 0.001) in the offspring and myocardial hypertrophy (25 vs. 0%;P = 0.023) in the dams. The exposure of mice to an electromagnetic field with the cyclotron frequency of Mg2+ during pregnancy caused a measurable effect on the reproductive performance in terms of offspring per birth. This finding may be considered as a warning about the environmental effects of the electromagnetic fields on the stability of individual species and ecosystems.

Microbiota of a seepage face at the mouth of a subterranean estuary:diversity,distribution and substrate dependence

Subterranean estuaries,i.e.,the mixing zone between terrestrial groundwater and recirculated seawater,host a wide range of ***,field campaigns were conducted at the mouth of the subterranean estuary at the Sanggou Bay(Shandong Province,China)over four consecutive seasons at a seepage face(0−20 cm depth).The diversity of benthic microbiome was characterized via 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics,combined with physic-chemical parameters,e.g.,organic carbon,total nitrogen and sulfate contents in *** spring,the dominant species were assigned to the phylum *** opportunistic species was assigned to Acidobacteria,Actinobacteria and *** key components were identified to be species of the genera Pseudoalteromonas,Colwellia and Sphingobium,indicating the involvement of sediment microbiota in the degradation of sedimentary organic carbon,particularly that of pelagic origin,e.g.,phytoplankton detritus and bivalve *** spring,the microbial community was statistically similar along the depth profiles and among the three sampled *** spatial distributions were obtained in the remaining *** contrast,the dominant species assemblages varied significantly among seasons,with key genera being Thioprofundum and Nitrosopumilus during summer and autumn and Thioprofundum and Ilumatobacter during *** analysis revealed a seasonal shift in benthic nitrogen and sulfur metabolism associated with these variations in microbial community ***,our findings suggested that macro elements derived from pelagic inputs,particularly detrital phytoplankton,shaped the microbial community compositions at the seepage face,resulting in significant seasonal variations,while the influence of terrestrial materials transported by groundwater on the sediment microbiota at the seepage face found to be minor.

Subterranean estuaries are highly dynamic in processing dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN).Here we investigate DIN turnover in surface sediments(0–20 cm depth)at the higher,medium and lower intertidal of a seepage face,i.e.,the outer “mouth”of the subterranean estuary,during four consecutive seasons in Sanggou Bay,*** the studied period,ammonium(NH_(4)^(+))and nitrite(NO_(2)^(-))concentrations in the sampled porewaters did not vary significantly with depth or *** contrast,peaks in porewater nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))concentration and decreases in δ^(15)N-NO_(3)^(-) and δ^(18)O-NO_(3)^(-) were observed in the 15–20 cm depth(bottom)sediment,particularly during summer and *** with NO_(3)^(-) production,the sediment total nitrogen was also markedly peaking in the bottom layer of the studied seepage *** with abundant heterotrophic microbes in the sediment,this NO_(3)^(-) accumulation was linked to a reaction chain including organic matter decomposition,ammonification and *** winter,porewater enrichment in total nitrogen occurred closer to the surface of the seepage face but triggered also active NO_(3)^(-) *** pattern reinforced the importance of pelagic organic matter supply on NO_(3)^(-) *** the shallower depths of the seepage face(<12 cm),active net NO3removal occurred except in *** isotopic fractionation(δ^(15)N-NO_(3)^(-) and δ^(18)O-NO_(3)^(-) and metagenomic results revealed denitrification as the main pathway for NO_(3)^(-) *** assimilation from benthic primary producers may also consume a fraction of NO_(3)^(-) at the sediment water *** NO_(3)^(-) production and removal significantly varied in magnitude with season(13.6 to 6.2 nmol cm^(-3)h^(-1)).Substrate supply was the key driver for nitrate cycling,as evidenced by the high NO3production rate in spring by comparison to *** highest NO_(3)^(-) turnover rates were found in summer,suggesting the comb

Benthic microbial biogeography along the continental shelf shaped by substrates from the Changjiang River plume

Coastal zones are active reactors of continental material including that transported by rivers via a series of microbiota-mediated reactions. Nevertheless, current knowledge of the ecology and functioning of the microbiota in coastal areas affected by large riverine inputs remains insufficient on a global scale. Here, an investigation on sediment microbial composition, including taxonomy and metabolic network, as well as their relationship with major benthic reaction substrates, namely carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus, was conducted in the continental shelf affected by the spread of the Changjiang River plume. Surface sediment samples(48 samples)were collected during March 2018, obtaining a mean Operational Taxonomic Units(OTUs) number of 3 ***, Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria were abundant phyla in the studied sediments. Bray-Curtis distance analysis classified the 48 samples into 4 clusters(MG1 to MG4) at the phylum-level. MG1 and MG2 are found near the river mouth, receiving substantial land-derived particles from the Changjiang River ***-attached microbes may be settled in these regions and influenced the observed sediment microbial diversity and biomass, e.g., increased Crenarchaeota relative abundance. The relative enrichment of these two groups in heterotrophic microbes further suggests a reliance of benthic microbiota on substrates with terrestrial origin, particularly specialized on processing sulphur-rich substrates. Regions MG3 and MG4 are located in the outer margin of the area affected by the Changjiang River plume, mainly fed by settling pelagic particles from phytoplankton. Compared to MG1 and MG2, a significant increase in the abundance of Thaumarcheota(phylumlevel) and Nitrosopumilus(genus-level) was found in MG3, suggesting nitrogen-related transformations as the key reactions to sustain microbial metabolism in this region. Denitrification-nitrification process in permeable coastal sediments: An investigation on the effect of salinity and nitrate availability using flow-through reactors

Forage production and persistence characteristics of grazed native warm-season grass mixtures with or without nitrogen fertilizer
