Three-dimensional porous graphene-metal oxide composite microspheres： Preparation and application in Li-ion batteries

The use of new three-dimensional （3D） porous graphene-metal oxide composite microspheres as an anode material for Li-ion batteries （LIBs） is first introduced here. 3D graphene microspheres are aggregates of individual hollow graphene nanospheres composed of graphene sheets. Metal oxide nanocrystals are uniformly distributed over the graphene surface of the microspheres. The 3D porous graphene-SnO2 microspheres are selected as the first target material for investigation because of their superior electrochemical properties. The 3D porous graphene-SnO2 and graphene microspheres and bare SnO2 powders deliver discharge capacities of 1,009, 196, and 52 mAh·g^-1, respectively, after 500 cycles at a current density of 2 A·g^-1 .The 3D porous graphene-SnO2 microspheres exhibit uniquely low charge transfer resistances and high Li-ion diffusivities before and after cycling.

In this study, for the first time, polymeric precursors have been used in the preparation of yolk-shell powders using a large-scale spray drying process. An esterification reaction between the carboxyl group of citric acid and the hydroxyl group of ethylene glycol inside the droplet produced organic polymers during the drying process of the droplet. During the spray drying process, the polymeric precursors enabled the formation of multi-shell cobalt oxide yolk- shell powders with superior electrochemical properties. The maximum number of shells of the particles in the yolk-shell powders post-treated at 300, 400, and 500 ℃ were six, five, and four, respectively. The initial discharge capacities of the cobalt oxide yolk-shell powders post-treated at 300, 400, and 500 ℃ were 1,188, 1,331, and 1,110 mAh·g^-1, and their initial charge capacities were 868, 1,005, and 798 mAh·g^-1, respectively. The discharge capacities of the powders post- treated at 300, 400, and 500 ℃ after 100 cycles were 815, 958, and 670 mAh·g^-1, respectively and their corresponding capacity retentions measured after the first cycles were 92%, 93%, and 82%, respectively. The pure phase Co3O4 yolk-shell powders post-treated at 400 ℃ had low charge transfer resistance and high lithium-ion diffusion rate.

OBJECTIVE:Admission hyperglycemia in acute myocardial infarction (MI) is related with increased in-hospital and long term mortality and major cardiac adverse events。 We aimed to investigate how admission hyperglycemia affects the short and long term outcomes in elderly patients >65 years) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST elevation myocardial infarction。 METHODS:We retrospectively analyzed 677 consecutive elderly patients (mean age 72.2 ±5.4)。 Patients were divided into two groups according to admission blood glucose levels。 Group : low glucose group (LLG), glucose 168 mg/dL。 RESULTS:In-hospital, long term mortality and in-hospital major adverse cardiac events were higher in the high admission blood glucose group (P 1, post-thrombolysis in MI <3 and admission blood glucose levels were independent predictors of in-hospital adverse cardiac events (P <0.001)。 CONCLUSIONS:Admission hyperglycemia in elderly patients presented with ST elevation myocardial infarction is an independent predictor of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events and is associated with in-hospital and long term mortality。

Chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.) and pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan L.(Millsp.)] play an important role in mitigating protein malnutrition for millions of poor vegetarians living in regions of the semi-arid tropics. Abiotic stresses such as excess and limited soil moisture(water-logging and drought), heat and chilling(high and low temperature stresses), soil salinity, and acidity are major yield constraints, as these two crops are grown mostly under rainfed conditions in risk-prone marginal and degraded lands with few or no inputs. Losses due to such stresses vary from 30% to 100% depending on their severity. The literature abounds in basic information concerning screening techniques, physiological mechanisms, and genetics of traits associated with resistance/tolerance to abiotic stresses in these two crops. However, the final outcome in terms of resistant/tolerant varieties has been far from satisfactory. This situation calls for improving selection efficiency through precise phenotyping and genotyping under high-throughput controlled conditions using modern tools of genomics. In this review, we suggest that an integrated approach combining advances from genetics, physiology, and biotechnology needs to be used for higher precision and efficiency of breeding programs aimed at improving abiotic stress tolerance in both chickpea and pigeonpea.

AIM: To determine whether Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection caused hyperhomocysteinemia by altering serum vitamin B_(12), serum folate and erythrocyte folate levels and whether eradication of this organism decreased serum homocysteine level. METHODS: The study involved 73 dyspeptic H pylork positive patients, none of them had gastric mucosal atrophy based on rapid urease test and histology. Out of 73 patients, 41 (56.2%) showed a successful eradication of H pylori 4 wk after the end of treatment. In these 41 patients, fasting serum vitamin B_(12) folate and homocysteine levels, and erythrocyte folate levels before and 4 wk after H pylori eradication therapy were compared. RESULTS: The group with a successful eradication of H pylori had significantly higher serum vitamin B_(12) and erythrocyte folate levels in the post-treatment period compared to those in pre-treatment period (210±97 pg/mL vs 237±94 pg/mL,P＜0.001 and 442±212 ng/mL vs 539±304 ng/mL, P=0.024, respectively), but showed no significant change in serum folate levels (5.6±2.6 ng/mL vs 6.0+2.4 ng/mL, P=0.341). Also, the serum homocysteine levels in this group were significantly lower after therapy (13.1±5.2 μmol/L vs 11.9±6.2 μmol/L, P=0.002). Regression analysis showed that serum homocysteine level was positively correlated with age (P=0.01) and negatively with serum folate level before therapy (P=0.003). CONCLUSION: Eradication of H pylori decreases serum homocysteine even in patients who do not exhibit gastric mucosal atrophy. It appears that the level of homocysteine in serum is related to a complex interaction among serum vitamin B_(12), serum folate and erythrocyte folate levels.

Optimization of selective leaching of Zn from electric arc furnace steelmaking dust using response surface methodology

The aim of this work is to investigate and optimize the effects of the leaching parameters on the selective leaching of zinc from electric arc furnace steelmaking dust （EAFD）. The response surface method was applied on the basis of a three-level Box–Behnken experimental design method for optimization of selective leaching parameters of zinc from EAFD. The leaching recoveries of zinc （YZn） and iron （YFe） were taken as the response variables, where the concentration of sulphuric acid （X1, mol/L）, leaching temperature （X2, °C）, leaching time （X3, min）, and liquid/solid ratio （X4, mL/g） were considered as the independent variables （factors）. The mathematical model was proposed. Statistical ANOVA analysis and confirmation tests were applied. A maximum of 79.09% of zinc was recovered while the minimum iron recovery was 4.08% under the optimum conditions of leaching time 56.42 min, H2SO4 concentration 2.35 mol/L, leaching temperature 25 °C and liquid/solid ratios. By using ANOVA, the most influential factors on leaching of zinc and iron were determined as H2SO4 concentration and leaching temperature, respectively. The proposed model equations using response surface methodology show good agreement with the experimental data, with correlation coefficients （R2） of 0.98 for zinc recovery and 0.97 for iron recovery.

Protein mal-nutrition is widespread among poor of developing and under developed countries. Since animal protein is beyond the reach of this group, their primary protein supply comes from plant based products. Amongst these, pigeonpea or red gram (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) is an important food legume that can be grown under rainfed conditions with least inputs. Pigeonpea is rich in starch, protein, calcium, manganese, crude fiber, fat, trace elements, and minerals. Besides its high nutritional value, pigeonpea is also used as traditional folk medicine in India, China, Philippines and some other nations. Literature on this aspect show that pigeonpea is capable to prevent and cure a number of human ailments such as bronchitis, coughs, pneumonia, respiratory infections, dysentery, menstrual disorders, sores, wounds, abdominal tumors, tooth ache, and diabetes.

The Detection of STAT1 Gene Influencing Milk Related Traits in Turkish Holstein and Jersey Cows

The main purpose of this study was to detect an association of cytoplasmic signal transducers and activators of transcription-1 （STAT1） with milk production traits in 472 Holstein and 283 Jersey cattle breeds of Turkey. This gene, located on chromosome 2, was chosen due to its role on development of mammary gland. A polymorphism of selected 314 bp allele fragment was detected by the restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragments （PCR-RFLP） method and also confirmed by DNA sequencing. The association tests were conducted between STAT1 genotypes and some economically important dairy traits. The genotypes for C/T as a single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） were identified at interval 60 cM to 63 cM. The effects of STAT1 gene on milk production traits were not significant in Holstein cows, although animals with CT genotypes showed fairly close to significant value for the corrected 305 d milk yield. However, Jersey cows with/7＂ genotype were 2.07 kg higher for test-day milk yield （P 〈 0.05）, 0.13 kg for fat yield （P 〈 0.01） and 0.07 kg for protein yield （P 〈 0.05） compared with animals having CC and CT genotypes. Definitely, the further research should be conducted to search this gene intensively with larger samples to identify polymorphism and any association between the economically important traits and genotypic class in Holstein cows. Finally, based on the findings, it was concluded that STATI gene might be used as a potential candidate gene to improve milk yield and milk fat and protein contents in dairy cows breeding programs.
