Development of growth rate, body lipid,moisture,and energy models for white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) fed at various feeding rates

The objectives were to develop and evaluate: 1) growth rate models, 2) body lipid, moisture, and energy models for white sturgeon fed at various feeding rates(FR; % body weight [BW] per day) and then evaluate responses at proportions of optimum feeding rate(OFR) across increasing BW(g). For objective1,19 datasets from the literature containing initial BW, FR and specific growth rate(SGR; % BW increase per day) were used. For objective 2.12 datasets from the literature(11 from objective 1) containing SGR,FR,final BW,body lipid(%),protein(%),ash(%),moisture(%),and energy(kJ/g) were used. The average rearing temperatures was 19.2 ± 1.5 ℃(mean ± SD). The average nutrient compositions and gross energy of the diets were 45.7 ± 4.3% protein,14.8 ± 3.2% lipid, and 20.4 ± 1.3 kJ/g,respectively. The logistic model was used for objectives 1 and 2 to develop a statistical relationship between SGR and FR, then an iterative technique was used to estimate OFR for each dataset. For objective 2, the statistical relationship between body lipid, energy, and moisture and FR was established. Using the OFR estimate, SGR, body lipid, energy and moisture were computed at various FR as a proportion of OFR, Finally, a nonparametric fitting procedure was used to establish relationships between SGR, body lipid, energy and moisture(responses)compared with BW(predictor) at various proportions of OFR. This allows visualization of the effect of under-or over-feeding on the various responses. When examining the differences between OFR at 100%and various proportions of OFR, SGR differences decrease and moisture differences increase as BW increases. Lipid and energy differences decrease as BW increases. To our knowledge, these are the first description of changes in nutrient compositions when white sturgeon are fed at various FR. Responses of heat shock protein 70 and caspase-3/7 to dietary selenomethionine in juvenile white sturgeon

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the responses of juvenile white sturgeon(Acipenser transmontanus) to elevated dietary selenium(Se) based on the determination of the RNA/DNA ratio in muscle, heat shock protein 70(Hsp70), and caspase-3/7 in muscle and/or liver tissues. Four semi-purified test diets were prepared by adding different levels of L-selenomethionine(0, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg diet). The analytical determinations of total Se were 2.2, 19.7, 40.1, and 77.7 mg/kg diet. The sturgeon(initial body weight: 30 ± 2 g; mean ± SEM) were raised in indoor tanks provided with flow through freshwater(18-19 ℃). There were three replicates for each dietary treatment with 25 fish per *** liver and muscle tissues were collected at 4 and 8 weeks after feeding the test diets. A significant interaction between duration and levels of dietary Se exposures on RNA/DNA ratio in the muscle tissue was detected(P 0.05), the ratio was significantly decreased with increasing dietary Se levels. Significant main effects were caused by the duration and levels of dietary Se exposures on Hsp 70 in both the muscle and liver tissues, with significant increases in Hsp70 due to a longer exposure(8 weeks) and higher levels(40.1 and 77.7 mg Se/kg diet) of dietary *** caspase-3/7 activity in the liver were significantly higher in fish fed the diets containing 40.1 and77.7 mg Se/kg diet than those fed the other diets. The toxic thresholds of Se in the muscle were estimated to be 32.2 and 26.6 mg Se/kg for the depressed specific growth rate and the induced Hsp70 response in muscle, respectively. This result indicated that the Hsp 70 response in muscle is a more sensitive biomarker than the SGR of sturgeon for evaluating Se toxicity in white sturgeon. An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein level for juvenile marbled *** semi-purified test diets were formulated to contain different protein levels(CP)including 42.7%,47.4%,53.3%,58.8%,and 64.5%(dry matter),named as CP42.7,CP47.4,CP53.3,CP58.8,and CP64.5,*** hundred and twenty-five juveniles(6.0±0.1 g)were randomly distributed into 15 tanks(300 L tanks),resulting in 35 fish per tank(n-3 tanks).Fish were fed the test diets 5 times per day until *** CP58.8 resulted in the highest gain in weight and the best efficiency in feed utilization among the tested protein levels(P<0.05).Fish fed the CP58.8 diet showed significantly higher whole-body protein and lipid contents than the fish that were fed the other diets(P<0.05).Fish fed the CP53.3,CP58.8,and CP64.5 diets showed a significantly higher dorsal-muscle lipid content than the fish that were fed the CP42.7 and CP47.4 diets(P<0.05).The one-slope straight broken-line regression analysis on the results of the thermal growth coefficient and feed conversion ratio indicated that the estimated optimum dietary protein level was 58.8%.Taken together,it is suggested that the dietary protein level of 58.8%is optimal for better growth and high efficiency in feed utilization for the juvenile marbled flounder.

Production of olive flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus) ranked the top among the Korean mariculture finfish *** of Korean aqua-farmers rely on farm-made raw fish-based diets (moist pellets,MP).They believe that moist pellets give better growth than do extruded pellets (EP).However,the use of moist pellets is being discouraged due to the water pollution resulting from such a practice and shortage of resources for making *** government also recommends the use of extruded diets in aquaculture and encourages the development of environmentally friendly diet with optimum feeding *** particular interest in the feeding practice is the optimum feeding rate,which has been found to be influenced by several factors among which is the rearing water *** temperatures in the winter season cause stress;reduce resistance to disease;and decrease feed intake and *** ongoing study is conducted to investigated the effects of feeding rates in juvenile olive flounder fed commercial diet(extrude pellet) at the low temperature season(below 15℃).Three replicated groups of fish (initial weight 5.3±0.22g) are fed commercial diet at the feeding rates of 0,0.5,1,1.5 and 2% body weight(BW)/day and *** feeding trial is conducted by using a semi-recirculating system with eighteen 30-L aquaria receiving filtered seawater from a center *** duration of the trial is four *** effects of feeding rates on growth performance,body composition and histology will be discussed later
