A manual acupuncture treatment attenuates common cold and its symptoms: a case series report from South Korea

OBJECTIVE: To investigate beneficial effects of manual acupuncture on common cold periods and its symptoms depended on the difference onset time of common cold, within 36 h or over than that. To prove effects of manual acupuncture on common cold, a retrospective chart review was ***: Chart data for patients with commoncold who were treated with only manual acupuncture with fulfilling Jackson scales and satisfaction at the end of each treatment were collected via multi-centers of Oriental hospitals,Oriental medicine clinics and covalent hospital in South Korea. Totally 187 patients were divided into two groups, Group Ⅰ(115 patients, within 36 h)and Group Ⅱ(72 patients, onset time of cold over than 36 h). Finally 120 patients were observed until entire resolution of cold ***: GroupⅠ showed significant decreases themediandurationsofcompletelyrecovery(3 days;95% CI 3.0-4.0) as compared with Group Ⅱ(6 days;95% CI 4.0-7.0, P < 0.001). Background Danshen （Radix Salvia miltiorrhizae） has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia for treatment of various microcirculatory disturbance related diseases. Tanshinones are mainly hydrophobic active components, which have been isolated from Danshen and show various biological functions. In this study, we observed the neuroprotective effect of tanshinone I （Tsl） against ischemic damage in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 region （CA1） after transient cerebral ischemia and examined its neuroprotective mechanism. Methods The gerbils were divided into vehicle-treated-sham-group, vehicle-treated-ischemia-group, Tsl-treated-sham- group, and Tsl-treated-ischemia-group. Tsl was administrated intraperitoneally three times （once a day for three days） before ischemia-reperfusion. The neuroprotective affect of Tsl was examined using H＆E staining, neuronal nuclei （NeuN） immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B staining. To investigate the neuroprotective mechanism of Tsl after ischemia- reperfusion, immunohistochemical （IHC） and Western blotting analyses for Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase （SOD1）, Mn- superoxide dismutase （SOD2）, brain-derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF） and insulin-like growth factor-I （IGF-I） were *** Treatment with Tsl protected pyramidal neurons from ischemia-induced neuronal death in the CA1 after ischemia-reperfusion. In addition, treatment with Tsl maintained the levels of SOD1 and SOD2 as determined by IHC and Western blotting in the CA1 after ischemia- reperfusion compared with the vehicle-ischemia-group. In addition, treatment with Tsl increased the levels of BDNF and IGF-I determined by IHC and Westem blotting in the Tsl-treated-sham-group compared with the vehicle-treated- sham-group, and their levels were maintained in the stratum pyramidale of the ischemic CA1 in the Tsl-treated- ischemia-group. Comparison of Protein Profiles in Sputum between COPD and Acute Exacerbation of COPD

Background and objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow limitation that is associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lung to noxious particles or gases. Cigarette smoking is the major risk factor for the development of COPD. This study evaluated the levels of cyclophilin B in sputa from patients with COPD and COPD with acute exacerbation (AECOPD). Materials and Methods: Two-dimensional electrophoresis was used for differential display proteomics. Western blotting was used to identify and quantify cyclophilin B in sputum from subjects with AECOPD and COPD. Results: Forty-nine protein spots differed in relative intensity between the AECOPD (n = 6) and COPD (n = 6) subjects. Twenty proteins showed increased expression in the sputum of AECOPD subjects, and 29 proteins were present at lower levels in AECOPD sputum compared with COPD sputum. One of these proteins was associated with cyclophilin B. Cyclophilin B concentrations were lower in sputum from subjects with COPD (n = 4) versus AECOPD (n = 4). Conclusion: The sputum proteomic analysis suggests that changes in various proteins are associated with the development of AECOPD.

Background:Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is associated with impaired renal function,and both diseases often occur alongside other metabolic ***,the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in patients with NAFLD remain *** objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors for renal impairment in NAFLD ***:All adults aged 18-70 years with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD and transient elastography examination from eight Asian centers were enrolled in this prospective *** fibrosis and cirrhosis were assessed by FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase(FAST),Agile 3+and Agile 4 *** renal function and chronic kidney disease(CKD)were defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)with value of<90 mL/min/1.73 m^(2) and<60 mL/min/1.73 m^(2),respectively,as estimated by the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration(CKD-EPI)***:Among 529 included NAFLD patients,the prevalence rates of impaired renal function and CKD were 37.4%and 4.9%,*** multivariate analysis,a moderate-high risk of advanced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis according to Agile 3+and Agile 4 scores were independent risk factors for CKD(P<0.05).Furthermore,increased fasting plasma glucose(FPG)and blood pressure were significantly associated with impaired renal function after controlling for the other components of metabolic syndrome(P<0.05).Compared with patients with normoglycemia,those with prediabetes[FPG≥5.6 mmol/L or hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)≥5.7%]were more likely to have impaired renal function(P<0.05).Conclusions:Agile 3+and Agile 4 are reliable for identifying NAFLD patients with high risk of *** glycemic control in the prediabetic stage might have a potential renoprotective role in these patients.

Efficacy and safety of a patient-positioning device(EZ-FIX)for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

AIM: To assess the efficacy and safety of a patientpositioning device(EZ-FIX) for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP).METHODS: A total of 105 patients were randomized to the EZ-FIX(n = 53) or non-EZ-FIX(n = 52) group in this prospective study. Midazolam and propofol,titrated to provide an adequate level of sedation during therapeutic ERCP, were administered by trained registered nurses under endoscopist *** outcome measures were the total dose of propofol and sedative-related complications, including hypoxia and hypotension. Secondary outcome measures were recovery time and sedation satisfaction of the endoscopist, nurses, and ***: There was no significant difference in the rate of hypoxia, but there was a statistical trend(EX-FIX group; n = 4, 7.55%, control group; n = 6, 11.53%,P = 0.06). The mean total dose of propofol was lower in the EZ-FIX group than in the non-EZ-FIX group(89.43 ± 49.8 mg vs 112.4 ± 53.8 mg, P = 0.025).In addition, the EZ-FIX group had a shorter mean recovery time(11.23 ± 4.61 mg vs 14.96 ± 5.12 mg, P< 0.001). Sedation satisfaction of the endoscopist and nurses was higher in the *** group than in the nonEZ-FIX group. Technical success rates of the procedure were 96.23% and 96.15%, respectively(P = 0.856).Procedure-related complications did not differ by group(11.32% vs 13.46%, respectively, P = 0.735).CONCLUSION: Using EZ-FIX reduced the total dose of propofol and the recovery time, and increased the satisfaction of the endoscopist and nurses.

Prostate calculi in cancer and BPH in a cohort of Korean men：presence of calculi did not correlate with cancer risk

Prostatic calculi are common and are associated with inflammation of the prostate. Recently,it has been suggested that this inflammation may be associated with prostate carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between prostatic calculi and prostate cancer （PCa） in prostate biopsy specimens. We retrospectively analyzed 417 consecutive patients who underwent transrectal ultrasonography （TRUS） and prostate biopsies between January 2005 and January 2008. Based on the biopsy findings,patients were divided into benign prostatic hyperplasia and PCa groups. TRUS was used to detect prostatic calculi and to measure prostate *** correlations between PCa risk and age,serum total PSA levels,prostate volume,and prostatic calculi were analyzed. Patient age and PSA,as well as the frequency of prostatic calculi in the biopsy specimens,differed significantly between both the groups （P〈0.05）. In the PCa group,the Gleason scores （GSs） were higher in patients with prostatic calculi than in patients without prostatic calculi （P = 0.023）. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis,we found that patient age,serum total PSA and prostate volume were risk factors for PCa （P = 0.001）,but that the presence of prostatic calculi was not associated with an increased risk of PCa （P = 0.13）. In conclusion,although the presence of prostatic calculi was not shown to be a risk factor for PCa,prostatic calculi were more common in patients with PCa and were associated with a higher GS among these men.

Noble metallic nanostructures exhibit a phenomenon known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in which the scattering cross sections are dramatically enhanced for molecules adsorbed thereon. To use SERS in routine, on-line studies for analytical purposes, the substrates should be stable, reproducibly prepared, inexpensive, and easy to make. We report in this symposium that optically tunable, SERS-active Ag films can be reproducibly fabricated on dielectric substrates by the thermal decomposition of silver carboxylate. The nanostructured Ag films prepared in this way are expected to provide a new type of substrate materials for developing SERS as an ultrasensitive analytical tool.

Effects of smoking on cerebral and ventricular volumes in healthy males

Previous studies have reported decreased cerebral volume as a result of smoking. However, little is known about accompanying changes in ventricular volume for healthy subjects who smoke, although ventricular volume is increased in patients with multiple sclerosis who smoke. The present study analyzed whether cerebral volume decreased with smoking through the use of magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, accompanying changes in ventricular volume that resulted from decreased cerebral volume and smoking were analyzed in healthy subjects. When multivariate analysis of covariance was performed by integrating the 2 age groups, aged 20-28 years and 40-49 years, with statistical significance, results showed that cerebral volume of smokers was smaller and ventricular volume was greater compared with the non-smokers. These findings suggest that ventricular volume changes could be utilized to characterize the effects of smoking.

Risk factors affecting pancreatic fistulas after pancreaticoduodenectomy

AIM: To analyze the risk factors of pancreatic leakage after ***: We retrospectively reviewed 172 consecutive patients who had undergone pancreatico-duodenectomy at Inha University Hospital between April 1996 and March 2006. We analyzed the pancreatic fistula rate according to the clinical characteristics, the pathologic and laboratory findings, and the anastomotic ***: The incidence of developing pancreatic fistulas in patients older than 60 years of age was 21.7% (25/115), while the incidence was 8.8% (5/57) for younger patients; the difference was significant (P = 0.03). Patients with a dilated pancreatic duct had a lower rate of post-operative pancreatic fistulas than patients with a non-dilated duct (P = 0.001). Other factors, including clinical features, anastomotic methods, and pathologic diagnosis, did not show any statistical difference. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that pancreatic fistulas are related to age and a dilated pancreatic duct. The surgeon must take these risk factors into consideration when performing a pancre-aticoduodenectomy.
