AIM:To identify computed tomography(CT)findings that are associated with the presence of bacteremia in patients with acute pyelonephritis(APN)due to Escherichia coli(***).METHODS:The clinical data and contrast-enhanced CT findings of 128 patients who were diagnosed with APN due to *** and showed renal abnormality on contrast-enhanced CT between January 2003 and November 2013 were retrospectively *** patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of bacteremia:The bacteremia group and the non-bacteremia *** abnormality on contrast-enhanced CT were categorized into 5 renal and 4 extrarenal CT findings and compared between the two groups using the χ~2 test and multivariate logistic ***:Among the 128 patients,34 patients(26.6%)were classified into the bacteremia group and 94 patients(73.4%)into the non-bacteremia *** was no statistically significant difference in gender between the two groups(P = 0.09),but the age of thepatients in the bacteremia group was higher than that of the patients in the non-bacteremia group(P < 0.01).Compared to the non-bacteremia group,1 renal CT finding such as urothelial thickening and 3 extrarenal CT findings such as diffuse peritoneal thickening,cystitis and pulmonary congestion were more frequently observed in the bacteremia group with statistical *** logistic regression analysis revealed that CT findings,including urothelial thickening,diffuse peritoneal thickening,cystitis and pulmonary congestion were suggested as the predictive CT findings of bacteremic ***:On CT,urothelial thickening,diffuse peritoneal thickening,cystitis,and pulmonary congestion are more frequently observed in patients with bacteremic APN due to ***.

Glucosinolates （GSs） are an important group of defensive phytochemicals mainly found in Brassicaceae. Plant hormones jasmonic acid （JA） and salicylic acid （SA） are major regulators of plant response to pathogen attack. However, there is little information about the interactive effect of both elicitors on inducing GS biosynthesis in Chinese cabbage （Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis）. In this study, we applied different concentrations of methyl jasmonate （MeJA） and/or SA onto the leaf and root of Chinese cabbage to investigate the time-course interactive profiles of GSs. Re- gardless of the site of the elicitation and the concentrations of the elicitors, the roots accumulated much more GSs and were more sensitive and more rapidly responsive to the elicitors than leaves. Irrespective of the elicitation site, MeJA had a greater inducing and longer lasting effect on GS accumulation than SA. All three components of indole GS （IGS） were detected along with aliphatic and aromatic GSs. However, IGS was a major component of total GSs that ac- cumulated rapidly in both root and leaf tissues in response to MeJA and SA elicitation. Neoglucobrassicin （neoGBC） did not respond to SA but to MeJA in leaf tissue, while it responded to both SA and MeJA in root tissue. Conversion of glucobrassicin （GBC） to neoGBC occurred at a steady rate over 3 d of elicitation. Increased accumulation of 4-methoxy glucobrassicin （4-MGBC） occurred only in the root irrespective of the type of elicitors and the site of elici- tation. Thus, accumulation of IGS is a major metabolic hallmark of SA＊ and MeJA-mediated systemic response sys- tems. SA exerted an antagonistic effect on the MeJA-induced root GSs irrespective of the site of elicitation. However, SA showed synergistic and antagonistic effects on the MeJA-induced leaf GSs when roots and leaves are elicitated for 3 d, respectively.

Background There are numerous but conflicting data regarding gender differences in outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI). Furthermore, gender differences in clinical outcomes with acute myocardial infarction(AMI) following PCI in Asian population remain uncertain because of the under-representation of Asian in previous trials. Methods A total of 13,104 AMI patients from Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institute of Health(KAMIR-NIH) between November 2011 and December 2015 were classified into male(n = 8021, 75.9%) and female(n = 2547, 24.1%). We compared the demographic, clinical and angiographic characteristics, 30-days and 1-year major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events(MACCE) in women with those in men after AMI by using propensity score(PS) matching. Results Compared with men, women were older, had more comorbidities and more often presented with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction(NSTEMI) and reduced left ventricular systolic function. Over the median follow-up of 363 days, gender differences in both 30-days and 1-year MACCE as well as thrombolysis in myocardial infarction minor bleeding risk were not observed in the PS matched population(30-days MACCE: 5.3% vs. 4.7%, log-rank P = 0.494, HR = 1.126, 95% CI: 0.800-1.585;1-year MACCE: 9.3% vs. 9.0%, log-rank P = 0.803, HR = 1.032, 95% CI: 0.802-1.328;TIMI minor bleeding: 4.9% vs. 3.9%, log-rank P = 0.215, HR = 1.255, 95% CI: 0.869-1.814). Conclusions Among Korean AMI population undergoing contemporary PCI, women, as compared with men, had different clinical and angiographic characteristics but showed similar 30-days and 1-year clinical outcomes. The risk of bleeding after PCI was comparable between men and women during one-year follow up.

Background: The objective of this study was to estimate the carbon sequestration in soils cooperated with organic composts and bio-char during corn cultivation. Methods and Results: For the experiment, the soil texture used in this study was clay loam, and application rates of chemical fertilizer and bio-char were 230-107-190 kg·ha-1 (N-P2O5-K2O) as recommended amount after soil test and 0.2% to soil weight. The soil samples were periodically taken at every 15-day intervals during the experimental periods. The treatments consisted of cow compost, pig compost, swine digestate from aerobic digestion system, and their bio-char cooperation. For estimating soil C sequestration, it is determined by the net balance between carbon inputs and outputs during corn cultivation periods. For the experimental results, it found that applications of aerobic swine digestate, cow compost, and pig compost could sequester C by 38.9%, 82.2% and 19.7% in soil, respectively, when bio-char from rice hulls was cooperated with soil. For plant responses, application of bio-char in the corn field for carbon sequestration was not occurred the damage of corn growth. Conclusion: When bio-char from rice hulls was cooperated with soil, applications of aerobic swine digestate, cow compost, and pig compost could sequester C by 38.9%, 82.2% and 19.7% in soil, respectively. Therefore, addition of bio-char with organic composts could have a potential soil C sequestration in agricultural practices.

Cordyceps (CS) is used as an alternative medicine and functional food. We examined in vivo mechanisms underlying the antifatigue effects of the cultured mycelium extract of CS (CS extract) in forced swimming mice, a fatigue model that is induced by muscle exercise. Animals orally administered with CS extract significantly extended the loaded forced-swimming time, indicating its antifatigue effects. CS extract modulated the increased levels of blood IL-6 that was induced by forced swimming. CS extract protected the forced swimming-induced increase in NKp46 expression of splenic NK cells, suggesting regulation of fatigue-elicited hyper-reactivity by activated NK cells. By DNA microarray analysis of the quadriceps femoris muscle, it was uncovered that CS extract prevented the forced swimming-mediated upregulation of the expression of 5 genes associating with muscular inflammation (Ccl6, Ccl8, and Wfdc17) and muscle regeneration (Sfrp4 and Nfil3), whereas it regulated the downregulation in the expression of Svs5 participating in actin binding. CS extract exhibits the antifatigue effects through preventing IL-6 accumulation in blood, regulating NK cell activation in the spleen, and alleviating altered expression of genes related to inflammation, regeneration, and actin binding in the local muscle. Thus, CS extract is an effective functional food for preventing fatigue.

Cordyceps (CS) is a Chinese herb that produces various effects including immune modulation, and now CS culture product is interested in the use as a functional food. We prepared CS mycelium culture extract (Paecilomyces hepiali, CBG-CS-2), CS extract, for functional foods. This study aimed to deduce the molecular mechanism of immunomodulatory effect of CS extract in Peyer’s patches (PPs), a main gut immune site, in mice that treated with mitomycin C (MMC), an immunosuppressing antibiotics. Nutrigenomics give us invaluable molecular information about both of foods and nutrition to improve or maintain good health. Here we performed nutrigenomics using DNA microarray to investigate the effect of CS extract on gene expression altered in PPs of the immunosuppressed mice. Interestingly, CS extract protected from the MMC-mediated downregulation of 22 genes, which are associated with IgA production and other immune response in PPs. These suggested that CS extract alleviated the downregulated expression of immune related genes in the gut immune site in an immunosuppressed state. Thus CS extract appears to be practical functional food for immunodepression and/or its related hypofunction.

BACKGROUND Gastric ‘indefinite for neoplasm/dysplasia'(IFND) is a borderline lesion that is difficult to diagnose as either regenerative or neoplastic. There is a need for guidance in the identification of a subset of patients, who have an IFND lesion with a higher risk of malignant potential, to enable risk stratification and optimal *** To determine the clinical and pathologic factors for the accurate diagnosis of gastric IFND *** In total, 461 gastric lesions diagnosed via biopsy as IFND lesions were retrospectively evaluated. Endoscopic resection(n = 134), surgery(n = 22), and follow-up endoscopic biopsy(n = 305) were performed to confirm the *** time interval from initial biopsy to cancer diagnosis was measured, and diagnostic delays were categorized as > 2 wk, > 2 mo, > 6 mo, and > 1 year. The IFND lesions presenting as regenerating atypia(60%) or atypical epithelia(40%)at initial biopsy were adenocarcinomas in 22.6%, adenomas in 8.9%, and gastritis in 68.5% of the *** Four clinical factors [age ≥ 60 years(2.445, 95%CI: 1.305-4.580, P = 0.005),endoscopic size ≥ 10 mm(3.519, 95%CI: 1.891-6.548, P < 0.001), single lesion(5.702, 95%CI: 2.212-14.696, P < 0.001), and spontaneous bleeding(4.056, 95%CI:1.792-9.180, P = 0.001)], and two pathologic factors [atypical epithelium(25.575,95%CI: 11.537-56.695, P < 0.001], and repeated IFND diagnosis [6.022, 95%CI:1.822-19.909, P = 0.003)] were independent risk factors for gastric cancer. With two or more clinical factors, the sensitivity and specificity for carcinoma were91.3% and 54.9%, respectively. Ten undifferentiated carcinomas were initially diagnosed as IFND. In the subgroup analysis, fold change(5.594, 95%CI: 1.458-21.462, P = 0.012) predicted undifferentiated or invasive carcinoma in the submucosal layers or deeper.
