The coastal zone is the significant environmental setting where ocean interfaces land. In addition, it is economically important because of its high residential, commercial and recreational values. Meanwhile, in the United States, public coastal areas are increasingly off-limits due to elevated levels of fecal pollution and other contaminants. This study investigates the effects of rainfall, discharge, wave, and alongshore transport on coastal FIB （fecal indicator bacteria） concentrations at adjacent beaches in Orange County, California, over three years＇ period from October 2001 to September 2004. In order to identify the dominant tempora land spatial patterns of fecal pollutions along the coastal beaches, Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis was utilized for the three-year measurements （n = 39,525） of FIB concentration data from 17 sampling stations. Through the data analysis and the empirical orthogonal function analysis, it was found that the dominant factor effecting coastal FIB concentration is precipitation event and consequent water discharge from Santa Ana River in the area. The Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis revealed the potential non-point FIB sources around northern part of Orange County beaches. In addition, this study confirmed the existing alongshore transport by wave-driven surf zone current and offshore tidal currents.

The issue of CCF （common cause failure） in digital I ＆ C （instrumentation and control） systems is of great interest because an increasing number of such systems are implemented in nuclear power plants. For the mitigation of ATWS （anticipated transients without scram） as well as CCF within the PPS （plant protection system） and the ESF-CCS （engineered safety feature-component control system）, the ADPS （advanced diverse protection system） has been developed by KEPCO E ＆ C （KEPCO Engineering and Construction） Company for new nuclear units in Korea. As compared to the DPS （diverse protection system） design of APR1400, the ADPS has a diverse safety injection function considering a LBLOCA （large break loss of coolant accident） concurrent with the CCF of the PPS and ESF-CCS. Besides the function of SIAS （safety injection actuation signal） initiation, several CCF avoidance features, such as the changes of software design classification, communication methods, equipment platform, and man-machine interfaces, are introduced to enhance the reliability of the ADPS. In addition, the ADPS has recently incorporated four redundant channels with 2-out-of-4 voting logics to enhance its fault tolerant capability. Therefore, it is expected that the ADPS can provide an enhanced reliability regarding possible CCFs in the safety-grade digital I ＆ C systems as well as the ADPS itself.

Reactive oxygen species(ROS)are byproducts of cellular metabolism;they play a significant role as secondary messengers in cell *** cells,high concentrations of ROS induce apoptosis,senescence,and contact inhibition,while low concentrations of ROS result in angiogenesis,proliferation,and cytoskeleton ***,controlling ROS generation is an important factor in cell *** designed a chlorin e6(Ce6)-immobilized polyethylene terephthalate(PET)film(Ce6-PET)to produce extracellular ROS under red-light *** application of Ce6-PET films can regulate the generation of ROS by altering the intensity of light-emitting diode *** confirmed that the Ce6-PET film could effectively promote cell growth under irradiation at 500 μW/cm^(2) for 30 min in human umbilical vein endothelial *** also found that the Ce6-PET film is more efficient in generating ROS than a Ce6-incorporated polyurethane film under the same ***6-PET fabrication shows promise for improving the localized delivery of extracellular ROS and regulating ROS formation through the optimization of irradiation intensity.

Human hepatitis B virus(HBV) is a member of the family Hepadnaviridae, and causes acute and chronic infections of the liver. The hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) contains the large(L), middle(M), and small(S) surface proteins. The L protein consists of the S protein, pre S1, and pre S2. In HBs Ag, the pre S domain(pre S1 + pre S2) plays a key role in the infection of hepatocytic cells by HBV and has several immunogenic epitopes. Based on these characteristics of pre S, several pre S-based diagnostic and therapeutic materials and systems have been developed. Pre S1-specific monoclonal antibodies(e.g., MA18/7 and KR127) can be used to inhibit HBV infection. A myristoylated pre S1 peptide(amino acids 2-48) also inhibits the attachment of HBV to Hepa RG cells, primary human hepatocytes, and primary tupaia hepatocytes. Antibodies and antigens related to the components of HBs Ag, pre S(pre S1 + pre S2), or pre S1 can be available as diagnostic markers of acute and chronic HBV infections. Hepatocyte-targeting delivery systems for therapeutic molecules(drugs, genes, or proteins) are very important for increasing the clinical efficacy of these molecules and in reducing their adverse effects on other organs. The selective delivery of diagnosticmolecules to target hepatocytic cells can also improve the efficiency of diagnosis. In addition to the full-length HBV vector, pre S(pre S1 + pre S2), pre S1, and pre S1-derived fragments can be useful in hepatocyte-specific targeting. In this review, we discuss the literature concerning the applications of the HBV pre S domain in bio- and nanotechnology.

Effect of focal laser photocoagulation in eyes with mild to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy

AIM：To report the effect of focal laser photocoagulation on both the severity of hard exudates（HEs） and the rate of disease progression in eyes with mild to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy（NPDR）.METHODS： We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 33 patients（60 eyes） who had been diagnosed with mild to moderate NPDR between January 2006 and December *** patients were divided into 2 groups：Group A（38 eyes in 20 patients treated using focal laser photocoagulation） and Group B（treated without laser photocoagulation）.We also reviewed the best corrected visual acuity measurements,and the fundus photographs taken at both baseline and follow-up visits. RESULTS： In Group A,HE severity grade had decreased significantly from baseline to the final visit（P 〈0.05）,but this was not the case in Group B（P =0.662）.The cumulative probabilities of retinopathy progression at 5y were 26% in Group A and 30% in Group *** survival curves showed no significant difference between the groups with regard to retinopathy progression（P =0.805）.CONCLUSION： Focal laser photocoagulation reduced the levels of HEs in eyes with mild to moderate ***,the treatment was not able to decelerate the progression of DR.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)enables rapid detection of single molecules with high ***,quantitative and sensitive SERS analysis has been a challenge due to the lack of reliable SERS-active *** this study,we developed a quantitative SERS-based immunoassay using enzyme-guided Ag growth on Raman labeling compound(RLC)-immobilized gold nanoparticle(Au NP)-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag).The enzyme amplified Ag+reduction as well as Ag growth on the RLC-immobilized Au NP-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC),which resulted in a significant increase in SERS *** the presence of target antigens such as immunoglobulinG(IgG)or prostate-specific antigen(PSA),Ab1-Antigen-Ab2 immune complex with alkaline phosphatase triggered an enzyme-catalyzed reaction to convert 2-phospho-L-ascorbic acid(2-phospho-L-AA)to ascorbic acid(AA).As produced AA reduced Ag+to Ag,forming an Ag hot spot on the surface of SiO2@Au-RLC,which enhanced the SERS signal of SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag in a solution with a target antigen *** plasmonic immunoassay for IgG detection showed a high linearity of SERS intensity in the range of 0.6 to 9.0 ng/mL with a detection limit(LOD)of 0.09 ng/mL,while an LOD of 0.006 ng/mL was obtained for *** results indicate that the sensitivity of our novel SERS-based immunoassay is higher than that of conventional enzyme-based colorimetric immunoassays.

The new measurement scheme of IP performance metrics is for the mobile network in heterogeneous wireless network environment. In the proposed scheme, when Mobile Nodes （MNs） inside the mobile network needs to understand the condition of multiple comrmunicatinn paths outside the mobile netwtrk, they can get IP performance metrics, such as delay, jitter, bandwidth, packet loss, etc., irrespective of the preserre or absence of measurement functionality. At the same time, the proposed scheme dees not require the MN to he involved in measuring IP performance metrice. The Multihomed Mobile Router （MMR） with heterogeneons wireless interfaces measures IP performance metrics on behalf of the MNs inside the mobile network. Then, MNs can get measured IP perfonmnce metries from the MMR using L3 messages. The proposed scheme can reduce burden and power consumption of MNs with limited resource and batty power since MNs don＇ t measure IP performance metrics directly. In addition, it can reduce considerably traffic overhead over wireless links on multiple measurement paths since signaling messages and injeeted testing traffic are reduced.

Mg has received much attention as a next-generation implantable material owing to its biocompatibility,bone-like mechanical properties,and biodegradability in physiological *** application of various polymer coatings has been conducted in the past to reduce the rapid formation of hydrogen gas and the local change in pH during the initial phase of the chemical reaction with the body ***,we propose femtosecond(fs)laser-mediated Mg surface patterning for significant enhancement of the binding strength of the coating material,which eventually reduces the corrosion *** of the structural,physical,crystallographic,and chemical properties of the Mg surface have been conducted in order to understand the mechanism by which the surface adhesion increases between Mg and the polymer coating *** on the fs laser conditions,the surface structure becomes rough owing to the presence of several microscaled pits and grooves of nanoporous MgO,resulting in a tightly bonded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA)*** corrosion rate of the PLGA-coated,fs laser-treated Mg is considerably slow compared with the non-treated Mg;the treated Mg is also more biocompatible compared with the non-treated *** fs laser-based surface modification technique offers a simple and quick method for introducing a rough coating on Mg;further,it does not require any chemical treatment,thereby overcoming a potential obstacle for its clinical use.

This study reports a case of unresectable intrahepatic mass-forming cholangiocarcinoma which showed a dramatic response to gemcitabine that led to curative resection and a long-term survival of more than five *** and five cycles of gemcitabine monotherapy were administered separately over a three-year period and a radical excision was performed at 4.5 years after *** case indicates the role of gemcitabine as a neoadjuvant chemotherapeutic agent for cholangiocarcinoma and guarantees a randomized controlled prospective study.
