chlorophyll （chl） degradation causes leaf yellowing during senescence or under stress conditions. For chl breakdown, STAY-GREEN1 （SGR1） interacts with chl catabolic enzymes （CCEs） and light-harvesting complex II （lHCII） at the thylakoid membrane, possibly to allow metabolic channeling of potentially phototoxic chl breakdown intermediates. Among these chl catabolic components, SGR1 acts as a key regulator of leaf yellowing. In addition to SGR1 （At4g22920）, the Arabidopsis thaliana genome contains an additional homolog, SGR2 （At4g11910）, whose biological function remains elusive. Under senescence-inducing conditions, SGR2 expression is highly up-regulated, similarly to SGR1 expression. Here we show that SGR2 function counteracts SGR1 activity in leaf chl degradation; SGR2-overexpressing plants stayed green and the sgr2-1 knockout mutant exhibited early leaf yellowing under age-, dark-, and stress-induced senescence conditions. like SGR1, SGR2 interacted with lHCII but, in contrast to SGR1, SGR2 interactions with CCEs were very limited. Furthermore, SGR1 and SGR2 formed homo- or heterodimers, strongly suggesting a role for SGR2 in negatively regulat- ing chl degradation by possibly interfering with the proposed CCE-recruiting function of SGR1. Our data indicate an antagonistic evolution of the functions of SGR1 and SGR2 in Arabidopsis to balance chl catabolism in chloroplasts with the dismantling and remobilizing of other cellular components in senescing leaf cells.

BACKGROUND:Adequate airway management plays an important role in high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR).Airway management is usually performed using an endotracheal tube(ETT)during ***,no study has assessed the effect of ETT size on the fl ow rate and airway pressure during ***:We measured changes in peak inspiratory fl ow rate(PIFR),peak airway pressure(Ppeak),and mean airway pressure(Pmean)according to changes in ETT size(internal diameter 6.0,7.0,and 8.0 mm)and with or without CPR.A tidal volume of 500 ml was supplied at a rate of 10 times per minute using a mechanical *** compressions were maintained at a constant compression depth and speed using a mechanical chest compression device(lUCAS2,mode:active continuous,chest compression rate:102±2/minute,chest compression depth 2–2.5 inches).RESUlTS:The median of several respiratory physiological parameters during CPR was significantly different according to the diameter of each ETT(6.0 vs.8.0 mm):PIFR(32.1 l/min[30.5–35.3]vs.28.9 l/min[27.5–30.8],PlUSION:The changes in PIFR,Ppeak,and Pmean were related to the internal diameter of ETT,and these values tended to decrease with an increase in ETT *** airway pressures were measured in the CPR group than in the no CPR group.

This study aims to characterize the cavitation damage behavior of aluminum alloys in seawater and thus to enhance its cavitation resistance. Potentiostatic experiments were performed under various potential conditions to determine the optimum protection potentials, at which cavitation damage was suppressed. A potential range was selected for the experiment from -2.2 to -1.4 V, which corresponded to the concentration and activation polarization regions on the cathodic polarization curve of the 5083-H116 alloy. After the experiments, the current density-time behavior was investigated, and the degree of surface damage was observed using three-dimensional microscopy and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, The optimum protection potential was determined to be in the range of-l.9 to -1.5 V under which the cavitation damage was reduced significantly.

AIM: Hypermethylation of the promoter of the hMlH1gene, which plays an important role in mismatch repair during DNA replication, occurs in more than 30% of human gastric cancer tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of environmental factors, genetic polymorphisms of major metabolic enzymes, and microsatellite instability on hypermethylation of the promoter of the hMlH1 gene in gastric ***: Data were obtained from a hospital-based,case-control study of gastric cancer. One hundred and ten gastric cancer patients and 220 age- and sex-matched control patients completed a structured questionnaire regarding their exposure to environmental risk *** of the hMlH1 gene promoter,polymorphisms of the GSTM1, GSTT1, CYP1A1, CYP2E1,AlDH2 and l-myc genes, microsatellite instability and mutations of p53 and Ki-ras genes were ***: Both smoking and alcohol consumption were associated with a higher risk of gastric cancer with hypermethylation of the hMlH1 gene promoter. High intake of vegetables and low intake of potato were associated with increased likelihood of gastric cancer with hypermethylation of the hMlH1 gene promoter. Natural volatile organic compounds(VOCs) extracted from conifers such as P. koraiensis and l. kaempferi have long been studied for their anti-oxidant, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of VOCs from P. koraiensis and l. kaempferi, lipopolysaccharide(lPS) was administered to generate a mouse model for inflammation by the nasal route to the lungs and intraperitoneally to the whole body. VOCs of P. koraiensis and l. kaempferi were exposed to the mice by standardized wood panels with closed system. Increased levels of serum IgE and PGE2 were observed after exposure to dexamethasone and VOCs. We further determined the expression levels of inflammatory cytokine mRNA in the lPS-induced inflammation model by the reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, the levels of cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-13 were determined in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Those inflammatory cytokines and the key enzyme for inflammation cyclooxygenase-2 expression in PBMCs were strongly reversed by dexamethasone and VOCs. lung tissues after nasal lPS exposure showed increased cytokine mRNA expressions which were suppressed by treatment with dexamethasone and VOCs. Furthermore, the damage induced by lPS was attenuated by dexamethasone and VOCs. In conclusion, the results from the present study indicate that VOCs of P. koraiensis and l. kaempferi have a therapeutic potential in the treatment or prevention of local and systemic inflammation due to their immunosuppressive effects.

AIM： To determine intestinal permeability, the serum tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α level and urine nitric oxide （NO） metabolites are altered in liver cirrhosis （lC） with or without ascites. METHODS： Fifty-three patients with lC and 26 healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. The intestinal permeability value is expressed as the percentage of polyethylene glycol （PEG） 400 and 3350 retrieval in 8-h urine samples as determined by high performance liquid chromatography. Serum TNF-α concentrations and urine NO metabolites were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ElISA） and Greiss reaction method, respectively. RESUlTS： The intestinal permeability index wassignificantly higher in patients with lC with ascites than in healthy control subjects or patients with lC without ascites （0.88 ± 0.12 vs 0.52 ± 0.05 or 0.53 ± 0.03, P 〈 0.05） and correlated with urine nitrite excretion （r = 0.98）. Interestingly, the serum TNF-α concentration was significantly higher in lC without ascites than in control subjects or in lC with ascites （198.9 ± 55.8 pg/ml vs 40.9 ± 12.3 pg/ml or 32.1 ± 13.3 pg/ml, P 〈 0.05）. Urine nitrite excretion was significantly higher in lC with ascites than in the control subjects or in lC without ascites（ 1170.9± 28.7 μmol/l vs 903.1 ± 55.1 μmol/l or 956.7 ± 47.7 μmol/l, P 〈 0.05）. COMClUSIOM： Increased intestinal macromolecular permeability and NO is probably of importance in the pathophysiology and progression of lC with ascites, but the serum TNF-α concentration was not related to lC with ascites.
