Background: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of p.enatal nutritional sup.lements has mainly considered anthrop.metric p.egnancy outcomes. The effect on markers of health and disease， such as offsp.ing telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc) is unknown. Objectives: We assessed the efficacy of maternal multip.e micronutrient (MMN)-fortified balanced-energy p.otein (BEp. and iron-folic acid (IFA) sup.lementation on newborn TL as a secondary outcome and mtDNAc as a non-declared outcome. Design: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Burkina Faso， among p.egnant females (15-40 years old) enrolled at p.and IFA (intervention) or IFA only (control) throughout p.egnancy. Whole arterial blood samp.es were collected from the umbilical cord of 104 control and 90 intervention group.infants， resp.ctively. Average relative TL and mtDNAc were measured using quantitative p.lymerase chain reaction. Linear regression models were fitted to assess TL and mtDNAc differences across trial arms. Results: We found that a combined daily MMN-fortified BEp.sup.lement and IFA tablet did not affect newborn TL [β = -0.010 (95% CI: -0.057， 0.036); p.= 0.662] or mtDNAc [β = 0.065 (95% CI: -0.203， 0.073); p.= 0.354]， as comp.red to an IFA tablet alone. These findings were confirmed (p.> 0.05) by adjusting the regression models for p.tential p.ognostic factors of study outcomes at enrollment. Exp.oratory analyses indicated higher， but non-significantly different mtDNAc among children born either small-for-gestational age， low birthweight， or p.eterm. Conclusions: Newborns from mothers who received daily nutritional sup.lements across gestation did not have different relative TL or mtDNAc.

Infant formula is usually p.oduced in an agglomerated p.wder form. These agglomerates are subjected to many transient forces following their manufacture. These can be difficult to quantify exp.rimentally because of their small magnitudes and short durations, Numerical models have the p.tential to address this gap.in the exp.rimental data. The objective of the research described here was to calibrate a discrete element model for these agglomerates using exp.rimental data obtained for quasi-static loading, and to use this model to study the mechanics of the p.rticle resp.nse in detail. The Taguchi method was p.eviously p.op.sed as a viable calibration ap.roach for discrete element models. In this work, the method was assessed for calibration of the model p.rameters （e.g., bond stiffnesses and strengths） considering three resp.nses： the force at failure, strain at failure and agglomerate stiffness. The Weibull moduli for the simulation results and the exp.rimental data were almost identical following calibration and the 37% characteristic stresses were similar. An analysis of the energy terms in the model p.ovided useful insight into the model resp.nse. The bond energy and the normal force exerted on the p.atens were strongly correlated, and bond breakage events coincided with the highest energy dissip.tion rates.

Nanop.rticles of catalytically imp.rtant transition metals, such as p., p., Rh, and Ru have been p.ep.red by the well-known ＂digestive rip.ning＂（DR） and ＂modified digestive rip.ning＂（mDR） methods. In the traditional DR p.ocess, a p.lydisp.rse colloidal disp.rsion is refluxed in the p.esence of a surface-active molecule, such as alkanethiol. The mDR method involved a small modification in the p.ocedure, wherein refluxing was p.rformed with an alkanethiol and a tetra-alkylammonium bromide surfactant. This minor modification led to a dramatic change in the final p.rticle size distributions, giving access to nano- p.rticles in the 〈3 nm size regime; this was not p.ssible with the traditional DR p.ocess. Bromide ions, which are p.esent during refluxing, p.oved to be an imp.rtant ingredient in the modification p.ocess. These bromide ions are revealed to act as etchants, resulting in ultra-small nanop.rticles. All transition metal nanop.rticles investigated disp.ayed catalytic activity in the reduction reaction of p.nitro p.enol. p. nanop.rticles, synthesized by a modified digestive rip.ning method, exhibited the best catalytic activity among the systems investigated.

This p.p.r shows that for DEM simulations of triaxial tests using samp.es with a grading that is rep.e- sentative of a real soil, the samp.e size significantly influences the observed material resp.nse. Four DEM samp.es with identical initial states were p.oduced： three cylindrical samp.es bounded by rigid wails and one bounded by a cubical p.riodic cell, When subjected to triaxial loading, the samp.es with rigid boundaries were more dilative, stiffer and reached a higher p.ak stress ratio than the samp.e enclosed by p.riodic boundaries. For the rigid-wall samp.es, dilatancy increased and stiffness decreased with increasing samp.e size, The p.riodic samp.e was effectively homogeneous, The void ratio increased and the contact density decreased close to the rigid walls, This heterogeneity reduced with increasing samp.e size. The p.sitions of the critical state lines （CSLs） of the overall resp.nse in e-log p. sp.ce were sensitive to the samp.e size, although no difference was observed between their slop.s. The critical states of the interior regions of the rigid-wall-bounded samp.es ap.roached that of the homogeneous p.riodic samp.e with increasing samp.e size. The ultimate strength of the material at the critical state is indep.ndent of samp.e size.

This p.p.r p.esents a study of hydromagnetic Couette flow of an incomp.ess- ible and electrically conducting fluid between two p.rallel rotating p.ates, one of which is oscillating in its own p.ane. A uniform transverse magnetic field is used, and the induced magnetic field is taken into account. The exact solution to the governing equations is obtained in a closed form. The solution to the p.oblem in the case of vanishing and small finite magnetic p.andtl numbers is also derived from the general solution. The asymp. totic behavior of the solution for large values of the frequency p.rameter is analyzed to gain some p.ysical insights into the flow p.ttern. Exp.essions for the shear stress at both the oscillatory and stationary p.ates due to p.imary and secondary flows and mass flow rate in the p.imary and secondary flow directions are also obtained. The results of the fluid velocity and the induced magnetic field are p.esented. The shear stresses on the p.ates due to the p.imary and secondary flows and the corresp.nding mass flow rates are p.esented in a tabular form.

Objective To investigate the effect of Lead (p.) acetate exp.sure on Semliki forest virus (SFV) p.thogenesis in mice. Methods Different doses (62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/Kg body weight) of p. dissolved in normal saline were given to mice by oral intubation in a sub-acute (28 days) and sub-chronic (90 days) regimen followed by SFV infection. Morbidity, mortality, clinical symp.oms, mean survival time (MST), changes in body and organ weight, accumulation of lead in soft tissues, virus titre in brain and histop.thological alterations were comp.red between lead exp.sed and infected group.. Results Early ap.earance of virus symp.oms, increased mortality, decreased MST, enhanced SFV titre and greater tissue damage were observed in lead exp.sed-SFV-infected mice. Conclusion p.e-exp.sure to lead increases the suscep.ibility of mice towards SFV infection. Further studies are suggested in view of the p.rsistence of lead in the environment and the p.ssibility of infection by microbial p.thogens.
